  • The 120 meters high pressure feedwater heater drain piping in nuclear power plant had been suffered by excessive vibration from the beginning of power generation. As time goes by, the piping vibration was beyond the allowable limit and an appropriate countermeasure was required to prevent the fatigue failure of the pipeline from the abnormal vibration. In this study, the vibrational characteristics of high pressure feedwater heater drain piping and the countermeasure for abnormal vibration were investigated. Among the several vibration reduction methods, the piping layout changed by making the smooth pipeline was applied to the high Pressure feedwater heater drain piping in nuclear Power plant. Applying the countermeasure, the vibration level was found to reduce over 54 percents and was satisfied under the allowable velocity at the full-power operation condition.

  • Although free-form surfaces can represent smooth shapes with only a few control points contrary to polygonal meshes, graphics hardware does not support surface rendering currently. Since modern programmable graphics pipeline can be used to accelerate various kinds of existing graphics algorithms, this paper presents a method that utilizes the graphics processing unit (GPU) to render blending surfaces with arbitrary topology fast. Surface parameters sampled on the control mesh and geometric data for local surfaces are sent to the graphics pipeline, and then the vertex processor evaluates the surface positions and normals with these data. This method can achieve very high performance rather than CPU-based rendering.

  • In this paper, we present the results of experimental and analytical investigations on the structural behavior of GFRP pipes used in the water supply pipeline system. Cross-section of the pipe is consisted with two GFRP tubes and polymer mortar between the tubes. Due to the advantages such as light-weight, corrosion resistance, smooth surface, flexibility, etc., use of GFRP pipe in the water supply pipeline system is ever increasing trend. Therefore, more optimized structural design methodology should be developed. In the investigation, we conducted theoretical and analytical studies on the load versus radial deformation characteristics of GFRP pipes. In addition, ring stiffness test is also performed. Test results are compared with theoretical and analytical results and it was found that the results are agreed well within 5% of radial deformation. Finally, it was also found that the GFRP pipes used in the water supply pipeline system are strong enough to satisfy the industrial requirements.

  • Grid(pipe network) design is an important element of Smart Water Grid, which essential to estimate hydraulic parameters such as the pressure, friction factor, friction velocity, head loss and energy slope. Especially, friction velocity in a grid is an important factor in conjunction with energy gradient, friction coefficient, pressure and head loss. However, accurate estimation friction head loss, friction velocity and friction factor are very difficult. The empirical friction factor is still estimated by using theory and equation which were developed one hundred years ago. Therefore, in this paper, new equation from maximum velocity and friction velocity is developed by using integration relationship between Darcy-Weisbach's friction head loss equation and Schlichting equation and regression analysis. To prove the developed equation, smooth pipe data areis used. Proposed equation shows high accuracy compared to observed data. Study results are expected to be used in stability improvements and design in a grid.

  • In the process of visualizing a point set representing a smooth manifold surface, global illumination techniques can be used to render a realistic scene with various effects of lighting. Thanks to the continuous demand for ray tracing and the development of graphics hardware, dedicated GPUs and programmable pipeline for ray tracing have been introduced in recent years. In this paper, real-time global illumination rendering is studied for a point-set model using ray-tracing GPUs. We apply the moving least-squares (MLS) method to approximate the point set to a smooth implicit surface and render it using global illumination by performing massive ray-intersection tests with the surface and generating shading effects at the intersection point. As a result, a complicated point-set scene consisting of more than 0.5M points can be generated in real-time.

  • Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is a diagnostic technique to evaluate the physical integrity of cable and finds application in leak detection and localization of piping system. In this study, a cable-shaped leak detection sensor was proposed using the TDR technique for monitoring leakage detection of ship's engine room seawater piping system. The cable sensor was developed using a twisted pair arrangement and wound by an absorbent material. The availability and performance of the sensor for leak detection and localization were evaluated on a lab-scale pipeline set up. The developed sensor was installed onto the pipes and flanges of the lab-scale set up and various TDR waveforms were acquired and analyzed according to the dif erent variables including the number of twists and sheath thickness. The result indicated that the twisted cable sensor was able to produce clear and smooth signal as compared to the TDR sensor with a parallel arrangement. The optimal number of twist was determined to be above 10 per the unit length. The optimal diameter of sheath thickness that results in the desired sensitivity was determined to be ranging from 80% up to 120% of the diameter of the conductor. The linear regression analysis for estimation of leak localization was carried out to estimate the location of the leakage, and the result was a determination coefficient of 0.9998, indicating a positive relationship with the actual leakage point. The proposed TDR based leak detection method appears to be an effective method for monitoring leakage of ship's seawater piping system.

  • We propose a new pipeline of fluid surface reconstruction that incorporates hybrid SDF(signed distance fields) and adaptive fluid surface techniques to finely reconstruct liquid-solid mixed surfaces. Previous particle-based fluid simulation suffer from a noisy surface problem when the particles are distributed irregularly. If a smoothing scheme is applied to reduce the problem, sharp and detailed features can be lost by over-smoothing artifacts. Our method constructs a hybrid SDF by combining signed distance values from the solid and liquid parts of the object. We also proposed a method of adaptively reconstructing the surface of the fluid to further improve the overall efficiency. This not only shows the detailed surface of the solid and liquid parts, but also the detail of the solid surface and the smooth fluid surface when both materials are mixed. We introduce the concept of guiding shape and propose a method to get signed distance value quickly. In addition, the hybrid SDF and mesh reconstruction techniques are integrated in the adaptive framework. As a result, our method improves the overall efficiency of the pipeline to restore fluid surfaces.

  • Among the main facilities of the power plant, the circulating water used for cooling the power generation system is supplied through the Circulation Water Intake Basin (CWIB). The vortexes of various types generated in the Pump Sump (PS) of CWIB adversely affect the Circulation Water Pump (CWP) and pipelines. In particular, the free surface vortex accompanied by air intake brings about vibration, noise, cavitation etc. and these are the causes of degradation of CWP performance, damage to pipelines. Then power generation is interrupted by the causes. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of CWIB through the hydraulic model experiment and apply an appropriate Anti Vortex Device (AVD) that can control the vortex to enable smooth operation of the power plant. In general, free surface vortex is controlled by Curtain Wall (CW) and the submerged vortex is by the anti vortex device of the curtain wall. The detailed specifications are described in the American National Standard for Pump Intake Design. In this study, the circulating water intake part of the Tripoli West 4×350 MW power plant in Libya was targeted, the actual operating conditions were applied, and the vortex reduction effect of the anti vortex device generated in the suction tank among the circulating water intake part was analyzed through a hydraulic model experiment. In addition, a floor splitter was basically applied to control the submerged vortex, and a new type of column curtain wall was additionally applied to control the vortex generated on the free surface to confirm the effect. As a result of analyzing the hydraulic characteristics by additionally applying the newly developed Column Curtain Wall (CCW) to the existing curtain wall, we have found that the vortex was controlled by forming a uniform flow. In addition, the vortex angle generated in the circulating water pump pipeline was 5° or less, which is the design standard of ANSI/HI 9.8, confirming the stability of the flow.
