Objectives: A great number of the elderly are not aware of having metabolic syndrome, and this pattern differs among regions of the nation. This issue is particularly important for the elderly people with chronic diseases. This study was conducted in order to identify the prevalence, predicting factors of perception and exercise behaviors of among the elderly population. Methods: Using data from the 2009 Korean Community Health Survey, we employed two-level logistic regression models to determine whether individual and community factors are associated with perception and exercise behaviors among the elderly population. Results: Results from weighted two-level logistic regression analyses indicated the individual-level factors of smoking, education level, health center education, community exercise program participation and unmet needs in men, and marital status (being separated), health center education women predicted the elders' perception. As for the community-level predictors, higher smoking and living in regions with high suicide rates significantly predicted the elders' perception and exercise behaviors of metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that education according to stage would increase the perception and motivation toward healthier behavior particularly for the elderly with lower perception levels of metabolic syndrome.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between internet addiction and health behaviors & mental health among Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 2010 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey was analyzed. Using the Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for Youth-Short Form: Self Report developed by the Korean National Information Society Agency in 2008, subjects were classified into 3 groups for internet addiction including general user, potential-risk group, and high-risk group. The health behaviors and mental health were compared among the groups for internet addiction by gender. Results: There was significantly higher prevalence of internet addiction including potential-risk group and high-risk group in boys(14.1%) than in girls(8.8%). There were significant odds ratios of perceived stress, perceived depression, perceived health and happiness, and satisfaction of sleeping in both genders at potential-risk group and high-risk group compared to general user for the internet addiction. The odds ratios of smoking at high risk group, alcohol drinking at potential risk group, eating breakfast at high risk group, and moderate physical activity at both risk groups among boys were significant. Among girls at both risk group, the odds ratios of smoking, alcohol drinking, and eating breakfast were significant. Conclusions: This study reveals a significant association among internet addiction, and health behaviors, and mental health in Korean adolescents.
This study. aimed to categorize attitude of smoking behaviors among adolescents and to provide useful data for development of anti-smoking programs for students was conducted from February 1 to August 15. 1999. using the Q method. After reviewing the literature and preceding studies. the researcher proceeded to interview 15 middle and high school students and thereupon. developed a statement form consisting of 34 items. Then. 33 students were sampled. The collected data were coded after having been scaled from '1' to '9'. and then. was analyzed using the PC QUANL program. After all. three types of adolescents were identified. The first type or 'negation' type students perceive smoking as bad habit. and therefore. do not admit of smoking. The second type or 'self-choice' type students conceive that anyone can smoke depending on their judgement. and therefore. admit of other students' smoking. The third type or 'self-perceived refusal' type admit of other students' smoking. but refuse smoking for themselves. Lastly. it is believed that the results of this study would be useful for designing anti-smoking health programs for our adolescents. It is also hoped that this study would be followed up by such studies suggested by the data for the development of anti-smoking programs for each category of students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in smoking related characteristics and psychological features of coronary artery patients by the stages of change in smoking cessation behaviors. Method: Subjects for this survey were 97 patients who were smoking when doctors diagnosed them to have coronary artery diseases. Result: Subjects were distributed 21.6% in precontemplation stage, 24.7% in contemplation stage, 17.5% in preparation stage, 19.6% in action stage, and 16.5% in maintenance stage respectively. The numbers of previous attempts to quit smoking of subjects in precontemplation stage(mean=3.00, SD=3.71) and contemplation stage(mean=2.63, SD=2.32) were significantly lower than that of subjects in preparation stage(mean=5.82, SD=6.20). Benefit scores of subjects in maintenance stage were significantly greater than those of subjects in precontemplation stage. Self-efficacy, barriers, seriousness, and nicotine dependency were not significantly different by the stages of change. Number of signs and symptoms related to smoking which subjects were experiencing were not significant by the stages of change too. Conclusion: Future intervention programs for smoking cessation should be focused on the strategies to enhance the realization of health benefits that patients might acquire from smoking cessation.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine factors related to smoking behavior, and to develop multilevel communication strategies for smoking cessation. Methods: This paper reviewed theories and empirical findings with currents ecological models to develop communication strategies. Theory comparison was also performed to identify important mediators in the process of smoking cessation. Results: Factors that have been identified to influence smoking behavior ranges from individual perception, attitudes and self efficacy toward smoking to organizational norms, regulations, community capacity, media advocacy and public smoking regulation policy. In order to address these multi-level determinants of smoking behavior, objectives and strategies for smoking cessation intervention were developed utilizing ecological perspectives to cover intrapersonal, interpersonal(mainly family member and peers), organizational and community/public policy level factors. Conclusion: Multilevel approaches have advanced the existing knowledge on determinants of health behaviors. New direction of research focusing on testing multilevel intervention approaches should be expanded to inform the efficacy of applying social ecological models to health behavior change process.
Purpose: This study was undertaken to identify factors related to quit-smoking intention based on the planned behavior theory among out-of-school youths. Methods: This study was a quantitative research, data were collected during Nov. 1. 2018 to Feb. 28, 2019, study subjects were 189 out-of-school youths in Youth support Center located in A, B, C area city. The data were analyzed using independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression. Results: There was a significant differences of quit smoking intention according to age, weekly allowance, participate of antismoking program. There were positive correlations between quit smoking intention and attitude to non-smoking and perceived behavior control. In smoking cessation intention influenced by predictive variable, age, weekly allowance, attitude to non-smoking, and perceived behavior control explain 26.8% smoking cessation intention. Conclusion: We believe that findings from this study will help to develop the specific smoking cessation education program for out-of-school youth's health behaviors.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors contributing to intentions of quitting smoking, and use of smoking cessation services for daily smokers, and willingness of using smoking cessation services by the public health centers. Method: A total of 1,403 cases of male smokers were collected by a telephone survey. The age of smokers in the study ranged from 20 to 59. Socio-demographic variables, cigarette consumption behaviors, quit attempts and intentions of quitting smoking, and use of clinical services provided by the local public health centers were analysed using SPSS program. Result: About 77.8% of the smokers consumed a pack of cigarettes or less per day. About 20% of the smokers have used quit aides such as nicotine patch, gum, quit cigarettes, and acupuncture. These variables were associated with prior quit attempts in the past 1 year. Older age, degree of addiction(less time spent without smoking after a smoker gets up in the morning), prior quit attempts, panning to quit in one month, doctor's advice to quit were the major predictors of using the smoking cessation services provided by the public health centers. Conclusion: Health educators have to entice physicians to give smoking cessation advice to smokers, and have to provide many different types of educational programs to help quitting smoking.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the smoking behaviors and to identify the impacts of depression, temperament, and characteristic on smoking experience in the female adolescents. Methods: This study surveyed 691 highschool girls in the Gangwon area using self -administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0. using Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Results: The smoking rate of the highschool girls was lower than that of the national average. Depression was observed to be seriously in the highschool girls. There were a positive correlations among smoking experience, the school records and novelty seeking and a negative correlation between smoking and cooperativeness. The significant predictors of smoking experience were the type of school, the satisfaction with school the school records, novelty seeking, reward dependence and cooperativeness. Conclusion: These results suggest that femalel adolescents who have the factors identified in this study are considered to have the potential for smoking. These results provide the basis for developing smoking prevention and cessation programs.

Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the factors related to the perceived peer smoking prevalence for adolescents. Methods: A self-administrated questionnaire was administered to 352 students in a technical high school in Kangwon Province in May, 2002. The questions included in the questionnaire were concerned with the estimated number of smokers among ten students of the same grade in their school, the sociodemographic characteristics, the smoking-related behaviors and attitudes, and the smoking-related environments. All the students had their expiratory carbon monoxide level measured with EC50 Micro-Smokerlyzer? to verify their smoking status. Multiple regression analysis was applied for data analysis using Windows SPSS 11.5. Results: The former and current smokers overestimated the peer smoking prevalence. Multiple regression analysis for estimating the peer smoking prevalence for the male showed that the perceived smoking prevalence was higher in the female students than in the male students, higher in those students whose mothers had a higher educational level, who had smoked more frequently, who had more best friends smoking, and who had a higher actual smoking rate of the class. For estimating the peer smoking prevalence for the female, the perceived smoking prevalence was higher in the female students than in the male students, higher in those who smoked more frequently, whose five best friends smoked, who had higher actual smoking rate of the class, and who had smoking siblings. Conclusions: This study showed that a higher perceived peer smoking rate is related with their own smoking history and smoking frequency, the smoking related environment, and gender. Smoking prevention and smoking cessation programs need to focus on correcting the falsely perceived smoking prevalence.
This study was conducted to examine if the revised HPM was appropriate to explain smoking quitting behavior. A convenience sample of 400 college students enrolled in the universities located in Seoul and Kyunggi-Inchon province was selected. According to the study results, smoking-specific cognitions and affect included in the study could significantly explain commitment to a plan to quit smoking which was one of the behavioral outcomes in the revised HPM. The study result showed that among predictors, smoking-related affect, perceived benefit of quitting smoking, and perceived self-efficacy significantly explained commitment to a plan to quit smoking, but perceived barriers and interpersonal influences did not. The model for smoking quitting behavior formulated with smoking-specific cognitions and affect was statistically significant and the model explained 48 percent of variance in smoking quitting behavior. More specifically, it was shown that among smoking-specific cognitions and affect, only smoking-related affect, interpersonal influences, and perceived self-efficacy were the significant predictors to explain smoking quitting behavior. Smoking-related affect was the most important variable to explain smoking quitting behavior, followed by perceived self-efficacy. However, the influence of commitment to a plan to quit smoking on smoking quitting behavior was not statistically significant. Lastly, the model for smoking quitting behavior formulated with individual characteristics and experiences could explain 13 percent of the variance in behavior to quit smoking. Although the model is statistically significant, only the number of quitting attempts had significant and direct influence on behavior to quit smoking, while the remaining variables did not.
