Cigarette price rise induced change in youth smoking rate (담배가격 인상에 따른 청소년 흡연율 변화)

  • This study investigated changes in the youth smoking rate and smoking cessation rates before and after a cigarette price increase in 2015. Specifically, the changes in smoking rate, smoking cessation attempt rate, selection rate and amount of smoking were investigated using primary data pertaining to Korean Youth Risk Behavior obtained from a web-based survey of youth general characteristics, mental health, subjective grade, drinking and smoking related characteristics before and after a cigarette price increase. To accomplish this, 800 middle school and high school students in 9th (2013), 10th (2014), 11th (2015) were surveyed. The current youth smoking rate was slightly decreased from 9.7% in 2013 to 9.2% in 2014, while the smoking rate in 2015 decreased significantly by 15.2% after the cigarette price increased to 7.8%. These results confirmed that increasing cigarette price is very effective at decreasing youth smoking rate, providing motivation to stop smoking and preventing smoking. The prevention of smoking and inducement to stop smoking during adolescence is very important because the majority of teenage smokers continue smoking into their adulthood. In addition to expanding a completely non-smoking area and a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship should be urgently sought, and the effect can be maximized when the WHO FCTC faithfully implements the already-founded treaty.

The Blood Cadmium Level in Elderly Smoker (노령 흡연자의 혈중 카드뮴 농도)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cadmium level in blood by age, gender, and smoking status among 162 elderly subjects in Gyeongnam Province from September 2006 to February 2007. The cadmium level in blood was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Subjects were classified according to smoking status and divided into smokers and non-smokers, smoking duration, daily smoking habits, age, and gender. Mean blood cadmium levels in male and female were $0.70{\pm}0.41{\mu}g/dL$ and $0.57{\pm}0.32{\mu}g/dL$ respectively, with no significant differences between the two groups. Cadmium levels in the blood of smokers and non-smokers were $0.57{\pm}0.32{\mu}g/dL$, $0.90{\pm}0.44{\mu}g/dL$ respectively, with the cadmium level of smokers being significantly higher than that of non-smokers. In comparison by age, cadmium levels in the blood of subjects over the age 70 years and over the age 80 years were $0.91{\pm}0.44{\mu}g/dL$, $1.02{\pm}0.39{\mu}g/dL$ respectively, showing a significantly higher blood cadmium level than that of non-smokers. when compared by the amount of daily cigarette consumption, there were no significant differences in the blood cadmium level between groups. However when compared by smoking duration, the blood cadmium level for the group of smoking duration of over 10 years was $1.15{\pm}0.38{\mu}g/dL$, significantly higher than $0.67{\pm}0.31{\mu}g/dL$ for the group of smoking duration of less than 10 years. In conclusion, longer smoking duration and older aged group showed higher cadmium level in blood. For more reliable results, further study of the elements that elevate the cadmium level in blood with more subjects and study variables will be needed.

Factors Associated with Intention to Quit Smoking in Male Smokers Who Have Not Tried to Quit Smoking in Seoul : Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (금연 시도경험이 없는 서울시 남성 흡연자의 금연의도 영향요인: 계획된 행동론에 근거하여)

  • This study was conducted to provide a basis for developing strategies to improve the intention to quit smoking by identifying the factors affecting the smoking cessation intention of male smokers living in Seoul who have not tried to quit smoking in the past year. The components of the planned behavioral theory were used to identify the influencing factors. The research data were analysed secondary data used in the study performed by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2020. As a result of the univariate analysis, the factors affecting the smoking cessation intention rate were the average daily smoking amount and the components of the TPB. As a result of multivariate logistic regression analysis, the subjective norm and the perceived behavior control factor among the components of the TPB had statistically significant differences. Therefore, in order to increase the intention to quit smoking, it would be effective to use strategies that strengthen the strong recommendations from significant others and the smoker's self control.

The Effects of Case Management Program for Diabetic Patients - Focused on Medium-sized Industrial Workers - (당뇨병 대상자에게 실시한 사례관리 프로그램의 효과 - 중규모 사업장 근로자를 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: This paper studies the influence of the case-management program on the change of blood sugar, lifestyle, and knowledge level of diabetes mellitus (DM) for medium-sized-enterprise employees suffering from DM. Method: Subjects, divided into experimental and control groups, are 59 workers with FBS higher than 126mg/$d{\ell}$ or under DM medication treatment in the medium-sized enterprises, being managed by two distinct university hospital group occupational health management service teams. The case management program for DM patients consists of 6 different processes in which each subject is treated. Result: FBS decreased in the experimental group after the program, while that of the control group increased significantly. In the experimental group, the amount of smoking, the frequency of drinking and the amount of drinking per week decreased. Also, the knowledge level for DM and the change of nutrition management showed significant increase. In the control group, the amount of smoking increased and the frequency of drinking, the amount of drinking and nutrition level did not change significantly. And the knowledge level for DM decreased. Conclusion: We expect that taking this case management program for DM management may significantly improve diabetic patients' overall health.

Factors Related to the Intention of Participation in a Worksite Smoking Cessation Program (근로자의 금연프로그램 참가의도와 관련된 요인)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate factors related to the intention of participation in a worksite smoking cessation program. Methods: To explain the health behavior of participating intention in a worksite smoking cessation program, the health belief model(HBM) was used as study model, and 144 self-administered questionnaires were completed by electronic company workers. Variables of the health belief model were composed of perceived susceptibility to smokinginduced disease, perceived severity of smoking-induced disease, economical gain as perceived benefit of smoking cessation, and nicotine dependency as perceived barrier of smoking cessation. Variables of sociodemographics, smoking status, knowledge about adverse health effects of smoking, and cues to smoking cessation were used as modifying factors. Results: Perceived severity(POR=1.99, 95% CI: 1.03-3.83), perceived benefit(POR=2.11, 95% CI: 1.07-4.17), and perceived barrier(POR=0.29, 95% CI: 0.11-0.76) were significant variables to the intention of participation in a worksite smoking cessation program in the logistic regression analysis. The perceived severity was significantly affected by knowledge about adverse health effects of smoking(POR=2.17, 95% CI: 1.23-3.84). The perceived barrier was significantly affected by education level(POR=3.66, 95% CI: 1.17-11.44), age to first cigarette (POR=0.32, 95% CI: 0.10-0.98), pack-years(POR=5.47, 95% CI: 2.37-12.61). To the Perceived benefit, the model was not fitted. Conclusion: Our results found that counterplans improving the knowledge about adverse health effects of smoking, preventing early smoking, and decreasing smoking amount should be considered for an effective smoking ban policy.

Related Factors of Smoking Cessation Success and Maintenance of Patients using Smoking Cessation Clinic at a Public Hospital : focused on patient demographics and smoking related factors (일개 공공병원 금연클리닉 이용 흡연 환자의 금연 성공 및 유지 요인 : 일반적 특성과 금연관련 특성 중심으로)

  • This study was conducted to identify the factors related to the patient demographics and smoking factors on smoking cessation success and maintenance of subjects at the 6th and 12th week at a public hospital. This study utilized secondary data collected through the smoking cessation program of the 2014 public health care program, which is mediated for 6 weeks and checked for maintenance on the 12th week. The data were analyzed by the chi-square test, t-test and logistic regression analysis. There were 90 subjects in total, 85 men (94.45%) and 5 women (5.55%). The smoking success group and smoking failure group showed significant differences in family type (${\chi}^2=4.496$, p=0.037), education (${\chi}^2=12.253$, p=0.002), smoking amount per day before program (t=-2.906, p=0.005), and nicotine dependence before program (t=-3.081, p=0.003) after 6 weeks. Factors influencing smoking cessation success were religion (OR=3.719, 95% CI=1.076-12.859) and nicotine dependence before program (OR=0.713, 95% CI=0.520-0.976). Factors influencing smoking cessation maintenance were family type (OR=0.017, 95% CI=0.001-0.507) and no-smoking willingness (OR=2.062, 95% CI=1.059-4.015). For smoking cessation to be successful and sustainable, it is necessary to develop programs specific for the characteristics of the subjects; accordingly, continuous research and support are needed.

Comparison of PHP Indexes According To Smoking, Drinking And Eating Habits (흡연, 음주, 식이행태에 따른 PHP index 비교)

  • Purpose. This study was conducted from the period of April 12th, 2017 to April 26th, 2017. The questionnaires were distributed among a group of 76 adults aged 20 years or older, who participated in the prevention program of the department of dental hygiene at Busan Metropolitan City. The negative questionnaire was finally analyzed. Methods. The SPSS program was used for analysis of this study. The general characteristics of the subjects were t-test and one-way, ANOVA(by Scheffe post-test) for a PHP index (Patient Hygiene Performance index) according to frequency analysis, general characteristics, smoking and drinking behavior, and dietary behavior. Results. As a result of an examination of the PHP index(Patient Hygiene Performance index) ac- cording to smoking and drinking behavior, the amount of alcohol drunk was statistically higher than that of 'soju that was not drunk'(P<0.05). As a result of the PHP index (Patient Hygiene Performance index) according to dietary behavior, 'vegetarians' were statistically higher than 'Carnivorous oriented' individuals (P<0.05). Moreover, individuals who regularly 'drank almost no water' were statistically significantly higher than those who 'drank water steadily'.(P<0.05). Conclusion. As a result, appropriate management is required for oral health of the patient, Oral health education is needed to systematically consider smoking, drinking, and eating habits when taking into consideration the individual oral environment.

Effects of Smoking, Drinking, Exercise on Body Composition, Nutrient Intakes and Serum Lipids in Male High School Students (흡연, 음주, 운동이 남자 고등학생의 체성분, 영양소 섭취 및 혈청 지질 양상에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was done to investigate effects of smoking, drinking and exercise on body composition, dietary intakes, serum lipids of male high school students in Seoul. Body Composition was analyzed by the Bioelectrical Impedance Fatness Analyzer. Dietary survey was conducted by 24-hour recall method and nutrient intakes were analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional analysis program for professional (CAN-Pro). All data were statistically analyzed by SAS PC package program. Mean and standard error were examined for each items. The significant difference was examined by student's t-test. Body composition data showed that protein mass, mineral mass and lean body mass of regular exercisers were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of irregular exercisers. Energy and protein intakes of male high school students were 1868 kcal/day (69.2% RDA), 68 g/day (91.3% RDA), respectively. Ca, Fe and Vitamin B$_2$ intakes were lower than 2000 RDA. Analysis of serum lipids showed that serum levels of HDL-cholesterol of drinkers were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of nondrinkers. Overall results imply that smoking and alcohol drinking of adolescent males may not much influence on serum lipids levels because pack-years of smoking or the amount of alcohol drinking was not serious enough to be harmful to health.

Health Habits and Job Stress among IT Workers According to Employment Type (고용형태에 따른 IT 종사자의 건강습관과 직무스트레스)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences and the influencing factors of health habits such as smoking, drinking, and exercise on job stress among IT workers. Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to total of 300 people (30 persons per business place) at 10 IT work sites performing computer and information system tasks, and 275 data points were analyzed. The survey items were general characteristics, occupational characteristics, employment type, physical burden, amount of drinking, smoking, exercise, and job stress. Results: The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, non-regular workers showed higher smoking, exercise, and job stress than did regular workers by employment type, but exercise was not significant. Regular workers had a higher rate of drinking than non-regular workers. Second, the factors affecting alcohol drinking were gender and age, and factors affecting smoking were gender and employment type. Third, factors affecting job stress were annual income, long working hours, physical burden, and employment type. Conclusions: It is necessary to consider employment patterns in smoking, drinking, and job stress management. In addition, it is necessary to deeply analyze what affects the health behaviors and job stress of IT workers and explore ways to mitigate them.

Drinking and Its Relationship with Smoking among University Students (일부 대학생들의 음주와 흡연행위와의 관련성)

  • Objectives: This study examines the drinking behaviors and the relationship between drinking and smoking behaviors among some Korean university students. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted in May, 2006. A total of 1,163 students(715 male and 448 female) completed questionnaires, who were randomly selected in a university in Gyeongsangbuk-Do, Korea. Results: The overall drinking and smoking rates for male subjects were 88.7% and 37.2%, and those for females were 83.5% and 2.2%, respectively. Among the male drinkers 39.9% smoked, while 16.0% of the male non-drinkers were smokers. As male drinkers drink more often, heavier amount per drinking episode, even on a binge, their smoking rate was high. The subjects reported there was positive reinforcement between drinking and smoking behaviors. Conclusions: The drinking rate of students was relatively high, especially for male students drinking behavior was strongly correlated with smoking behavior. Health promotion programs should be targeted at university students considering drinking and smoking behaviors simultaneously.
