A Study on the Removal Characteristics of Indoor Air Pollutants using the Air Cleaning System (실공간에서 공기정화시스템을 이용한 실내 오염 입자 제거 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the performance of a commercial air cleaner in removing tobacco smoke indoors. Following injection of tobacco smoke in a room, decay rates for particle concentrations were obtained far mass concentration at each point. The size distribution of the tobacco smoke particles was approximately $1.266{\mu}m$ in mass median diameter with a geometric standard deviation of 1.313. The air cleaner consisted of an electrostatic filtration unit and a fan operated at a flow rate of 5.98 CMM. The collection efficiency for $>1\;{\mu}m$ was more than 99%. Without air cleaner operation, tobacco smoke concentration ratio in room decreased to 30% of initial values within 30 minutes and with air cleaner operation, decreased to 90% of initial values in the test chamber, volume $51.27\;m^3$. Without air cleaner operation, tobacco smoke concentration ratio in room decreased to 10% of initial values within 30 minutes and with air cleaner operation, decreased to 30-70% of initial values in the test chamber, volume $149.2\;m^3$.

  • The Fishtail Chimney system mounted on 1 channel smoking machine is not appropriate for the routine analysis of sidestream smoke, because of its low repeatability and very long time required for smoke collection. To overcome this inconvenience, we developed a new sidestream smoke collecting apparatus compatible for 8 channel linear smoking machine. An electric motor driven stroke and automatic control system were adopted in this device to maximize convenience and efficiency of its operation. Also, we carried out the international collaborative study on monitoring sidestream smoke analysis to test the performance of this system. From the statistical analysis of the data obtained in our laboratory and other participating labs, it has been indicated that the newly developed sidestream smoke collection apparatus could be applicable to the routine analysis of sidestream smoke.

A Numerical Study for the Operation of Partial Smoke Extraction System in Tunnel Fire (터널화재시 부분배연설비의 운영방안을 위한 수치해석적 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the smoke extraction efficiency using by the partial extraction system with CFD simulation for case of tunnel fire. The Comparison of CFD results with the preceding scaled model test results, it is equal to the smoke extraction efficiency and smoke stratification in tunnel by the partial smoke extraction system (distributed damper). It shows that the smoke extraction efficiency is increased about 7% by the distributed damper which is opened near fire, compare with the distributed damper which is all opened. The case of the fire occurs on a traffic jam in a tunnel, it is proposed that the operating method of partial smoke extraction system for the escaping passengers.

  • We have carried out the test using the cone calorimeter and the smoke density chamber to evaluate the characteristics of the combustion for the car interior materials passed horizontal burning test. We have analysed many parameters related to fire hazard. These parameters are the ignition time, the heat release rate, the maximum average rate of heat emission, the flashover propensity and specific optical density. There was a significant difference in HRR and optical smoke density. The HRR was $185{\sim}446kW/m^2$ and optical smoke density was $119{\sim}1207$. Only horizontal burning test was performed to evaluate the fire hazard for the car interior materials.

Study of The Relation between Smoke Component and Sensory Evaluation of Cigarettes with the Different Leaf Blending (엽배합 특성에 따른 담배 연기성분과 관능특성과의 상관관계 구명)

  • This study was carried out to determine the relationship between smoke components and sensory evaluation by changes tobacco leaf blending. Seven different cigarettes were made by adding different types of oriental, reconstituted and expanded tobacco leaves. 62 kinds of smoke components which were 6 of general components, 34 of semi-volatile and volatile components, 9 of acid components, and 13 of phenolic components were analyzed. Eight kinds of sensory item were evaluated and also electronic nose system data was collected. All smoke components and sensory characteristics of mainstream smoke were changed by the different blending. To determine the relationship between smoke components and sensory test, the correlation and regression analysis were carried out by using SPSS statistical program. Tar, pH, and CO showed a high correlation with sensory evaluation item. As tar related to hotness, CO have a high correlation with offensive aroma. Semi-volatile and volatile components of smoke related to sensory characteristics such as aroma, taste, irritation, hotness and smoothness. When propylene, l,3-butadiene, butane, isoprene, and 2-methylfuran showed a high correlation with aroma; methyl chloride, methanol, toluene, ethyl benzene showed a high correlation with irritation. Some acidic components and phenolic components of smoke also had a high relation to smoke volume. Especially the acidic components such as 2-furoic acid, 2-hydroxybutyric acid, phenylacetic acid and palmitic acid; the phenolic components such as 4-vinyl phenol, pyrocatechol, 3-methyl catechol, hydroquinone showed a high correlation with smoke volume. As using regression analysis, it was possible to estimate the results of sensory evaluation from the smoke analysis data. From the results of electronic nose system analysis, we can find the different pattern by adding expanded tobacco leaf.

  • Due to the complexity and large size of buildings, plastic resin is widely used as a building material. Accordingly, the occurrence of fires caused by plastics is increasing. Due to the nature of plastic resin fires, the amount of damage to properties and human life caused by combustion products such as smoke are large, and these damages are related to smoke production and smoke generation. Therefore, this study reviews smoke measurement methods and laws on domestic buildings and fire services. Experiments were conducted based on three smoke-related test standards (ISO 5660-1, ISO 12136, ASTM E 662). The experiment results indicate a total smoke production and generation by PP, PVC, and PMMA of 43.27, 32.83, and 12.33 ㎡, and 27.855, 9.599, and 6.975 g, respectively.

Some considerations for reducing black smoke in the exhaust gas from a diesel engine (디이젤機關의 黑煙防止에 관한 考察)

  • It has been a long time that black smoke emitted from buses and trucks powered with diesel engines, especially city-buses, came to be a serious air pollution problems in large cities as Seoul and Pusan. Therefore, proper means to reduce black smoke from diesel engines have to be considered as soon as possible, because it will take quite a long time to replace major passenger transportation system in cites from city-buses to subway. This paper, as a study on the reduction of diesel black smoke, showes how the black smoke of diesel engines can be reduced at various loads and engine speed by supplying small amount of gaseous fuel as LPG into the intake manifold. Thermal efficiency has been also considered for users, and confirmed through the engine test.

  • The fact that the major cases of life casualties are from smoke in the fire accidents and the expected steep increase of skyscrapers, huge spaces, multiplexes and huge scaled underground spaces demand establishment of efficient smoke countermeasure. The core technology for development of smoke management system is analysis tool of fan used in pressure differential system. The experiments on performance of sirroco-typed fan are carried out to evaluate the features of fan and present the experimental data for numerical analysis.

  • The smokeless liner, was required to propulsion system of gas generator, was developed by appling oxamide as a filler and HTPB system as a binder. Relative quantities of smoke produced during burning of liner by propellant combustion was measured by using smoke chamber. The smoke of the smokeless liner containing 50% of oxamide as filler was reduced to 1/10 as compared with conventional liner containing silica as filler. This result was showed by ground test of gas generator.
