PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effects of using a smartphone in the sitting position on the pelvic posture and the low back pressure pain threshold (PPT). METHODS: Thirty participants (15 women and 15 men) were recruited for this study. The participants were asked to sit in a normal sitting position without using a smartphone, followed by sitting while watching a video using a smartphone. The pelvic posture was measured using the back range of motion II (BROM II) device and a palpation meter. We measured PPT using the digital pressure algometer. RESULTS: Pelvic posterior tilting was significantly greater when sitting while using a smartphone relative to sitting without using a smartphone (p < .05). There was no significant difference in the height of the iliac crest when sitting while using a smartphone compared to sitting without using a smartphone (p > .05). The PPTs of L1, L3, and L5 were significantly lower when sitting while using a smartphone relative to sitting without using a smartphone (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Based on these results, it can be concluded that frequent smartphone use while sitting may potentially increase the risk of developing low back problems.
This paper confirms the risk of using smartphone through the analysis of collected usage pattern and proposes the smartphone intervention system in risk situations. In order to check the risk of smartphone usage, we made information collecting application and collected smartphone usage pattern from 11 experiment participants for two months. By analyzing smartphone usage pattern, we confirmed that about 12% of smartphone usage is being used in driving, walking, and on the street. In addition, we analyzed the response rate of smartphone notification in risk situations and confirmed that user responds the smartphone notifications in real-time even in risk situations. Therefore, it is required to present a system that intervenes the use of smartphone in order to protect smartphone users in risk situations. In this paper, we classify risk situations of using smartphone. Also, the proposed smartphone intervention system is designed to periodically detect risk situations. In risk situations, smartphone function can be restricted according to user setting of smartphone. And smartphone can be used normally when safe situation is restored.
This study was carried out to provide basic data for the promotion of the educational and social relations of adult learners and the effective way to use the smartphone. To accomplish this, we studied the influence of the degree of smartphone usage on the educational and social relations of college students in the area of Kyung-In and the mediator effect of smartphone addiction. According to this study, the research results were as follows: Firstly, the degree of smartphone usage did not directly affect family relationships, but highly affected smartphone addiction; smartphone addiction had both a negative effect on family relationships and a negative mediator effect between the degree of smartphone usage and family relationships. Secondly, smartphone addiction negatively affected the relationships with the opposite sex, whereas the degree of smartphone usage did not; however, there was a negative mediator effect between the time of using the smartphone and relations between the sexes. Thirdly, smartphone addiction negatively affected relationship with friends, whereas the degree of smartphone usage did not; there was no mediator effect between the time of using the smartphone and relationship with friends. Fourthly, smartphone addiction negatively affected the relationship with professors, whereas the degree of smartphone usage did not; there was no mediator effect between the time of using the smartphone and relationship with professors. The implications of these results are discussed.
This paper is focused on the investigation of the negative factors from smart-phone as internal affecting the use of smartphone and found their relationship. For the validation of this study model, 300 university students randomly selected in Seoul and Gyeongnam province. The measurement model was evaluated by using SPSS 18.0, and the evaluated result was summarized as follows. First, it was found that the techno-stress of smartphone user significantly associated with the fun and pleasure felt from using smatphone. It was assumed that a higher techno-stress negatively affects fun and pleasure from using smartphone. Second, the techno-stress of smartphone users was found to affect smartphone addiction. This means that more techno-stress users feel as they use smartphone, the more tendency to smartphone addiction. Third, flow was significantly associated with the smartphone addiction. Forth, Flow was significantly associated with satisfaction of the smartphones use. Fifth, it was indicated that when users had more flow and addiction from using smartphone, their satisfaction level was also higher.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate changes in gait variables depending on whether a task was performed using a smartphone while walking on a ramp. Methods: The participants of this study were 41 college students attending U University located in Gyeongju City, Gyeongsangbuk-do. In this study, gait variables were measured during ramp gait while using a smartphone to perform a task and during ramp gait without performing such tasks. In other words, four walking conditions were used: 1) walking up a ramp, 2) walking up a ramp while using a smartphone to perform a task, 3) walking down a ramp, and 4) walking down a ramp while using a smart phone to perform a task. Gait variables were measured using a gait analysis tool (Legsys; BioSensics, USA), and stride time, stride length, stride velocity, cadence, and double support were analyzed. The order of measurements was randomized to control for order effects due to repeated measurements. Results: The comparative analysis of gait variables according to the presence or absence of smartphone use during ramp gait showed that there were significant differences in stride time, stride length, and stride velocity during both ramp ascent and ramp descent (p < 0.05). In both ramp ascent and ramp descent, stride time increased when walking using a smartphone, compared to when walking without using a smartphone (p < 0.05). However, in both ramp ascent and ramp descent, stride length and stride velocity were decreased when walking using a smartphone compared to when walking without using a smartphone (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study results showed that the use of a smartphone during walking can affect safety. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the awareness of risks associated with walking while using a smartphone, and further research needs to be conducted in various environments and with different ramps.
Smartphone is very much ingrained into our lives and it has propagated rapidly. With the growing expansion of smartphone, the number of lost smartphones has proliferated all the while. Unlike common personal belongings, smartphone is a high-priced goods and has personal information. In case it gets lost or stolen, it will cause monetary damage as well as secondary damage of personal information leaks. To lesson the damage, diverse applications that prevent the loss of a smartphone have been developed. But existing applications place emphasis on providing countermeasures that tracks the missing smartphones. Therefore, this paper describes the design and implementation of a smartphone application which provides precautionary functions to prevent the loss of a smartphone and countermeasures to track the missing smartphone. The implemented application prevents the loss of a smartphone using satefy zone and movement detection. In the event we lose a smartphone, it helps us recover a lost property using location tracking and remote control functions quickly and efficiently.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate major factors influencing adoption of smartphone to promote its use by older adults. Background: Despite increasing proportion of elderly people and elderly market, the proportion of elderly smartphone user is still relatively small compared to whole smartphone users. Thus, we need to find out major factors influencing adoption of smartphone to increase proportion of elderly smartphone users. Method: Seven major factors were extracted from 36 survey questions using factor analysis. Regression analysis was also applied to determine specific factors affecting intention of use based on user versus non-user of smartphone, age, gender, and educational background. Results: As results of factor analysis and regression analysis, major factors influencing adoption of smartphone for elderly users were significantly different according to gender, age, educational background based on smartphone users or non-users. Conclusion: The result of this study identified major factors influencing adoption of smartphone for the elderly and provided basic information related to adoption of smartphone according to elderly people's characteristics. Consequently, we can expect to reduce the information gap and to improve quality of life for the elderly. Application: The development and marketing strategy could be applied differently based on the factors influencing adoption of smartphone. It is also possible to develop a prediction model for smartphone adoption according to elderly users' characteristics.
