  • The feasibility study of a newly proposed smart base isolation system employing magneto-rheological elastomers(MREs) has been carried out. MREs belong to a class of smart materials whose elastic modulus or stiffness can be adjusted by varying the magnitude of the magnetic field. The base isolation systems are considered as one of the most effective devices for vibration mitigation of civil engineering structures such as bridges and buildings in the event of earthquakes. The proposed base isolation system strives to enhance the performance of the conventional base isolation system by improving the robustness of the system wide stiffness range controllable of MREs, which improves the adaptability and helps in better vibration control. To validate the effectiveness of the MRE-based isolation system, an extensive numerical simulation study has been performed using both single-story and five-story building structures employing base isolated devices under several historical earthquake excitations. The results show that the proposed system outperformed the conventional system in reducing the responses of the structure in all the seismic excitations considered in the study.

  • In this paper, we describe the implementation and performance of a dual-mode Software Define Radio (SDR) smart antenna base station system. SDR technology enables a communication system to be reconfigured through software downloads to the flexible hardware platform that is implemented using programmable devices such as Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and microprocessors. The presented base station channel card comprises the physical layer (pHY) including the baseband modem as well as the beamforming module. This channel card is designed to support TDD High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) as well as Wireless Broadband Portable Internet (WiBro) utilizing the SDR technology. We first describe the operations and functions required in WiBro and TDD HSDPA. Then, we explain the channel card design procedure and hardware implementation. Finally, we evaluate WiBro and TDD HSDPA performance by simulation and actual channel-card-based processing. Our smart antenna base-station dual-mode channel card shows flexibility and tremendous performance gains in terms of communication capacity and cell coverage.

  • Recently, IoT(Internet of Things) has been extensively researching to provide intelligent services by fusing ICT. Especially with the advent of Germany's Industry 4.0, it is emphasized the importance of the industrial IoT to maximize the production capacity. Accordingly, a lot of efforts to spread the smart factory base of industrial IoT have continued domestically as well as abroad. But the current smart factory systems have controlled equipment using the data declared in the embedded systems. Therefore, it is difficult to control environment that lots of equipment is installed. In this paper, we proposed equipment control system based on data base access method for industrial IoT. This method controls the equipment using data base from parameter of equipment. Through experiments that the system apply to mold shot system with a number of variables, it is shown that the proposed method can efficiently control a number of devices.

  • In this paper, we present a hardware structure and new features of a smart antenna BTS (Base Transceiver Station) for CDMA2000 1X system. The proposed smart antenna BTS is a composite system consisting of many subsystems, i.e., array antenna element, frequency up/down converters, AD (Analog-to-Digital) and DA (Digital-to-Analog) converters, spreading/despreading units, convolutional encoder/Viterbi decoder, searcher, tracker, beamformer, calibration unit etc. Through the experimental tests, we found that the desired beam-pattern in both uplink and downlink communications is provided through the calibration procedure. Also it has been confirmed that the adaptive beamforming algorithm adopted to our smart antenna BTS is fast and accurate enough to support 4 fingers to each user. In our experiments, commercial mobile terminals operating PCS (Personal Communication System) band have been used. It has been confirmed that the smart antenna BTS tremendously improves the FER (Frame Error Rate) performance compared to the conventional 2-antenna diversity system.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure using wireless smart sensor networks (WSSNs) has received significant public attention in recent years. The benefits of WSSNs are that they are low-cost, easy to install, and provide effective data management via on-board computation. This paper reports on the deployment and evaluation of a state-of-the-art WSSN on the new Jindo Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge in South Korea with a 344-m main span and two 70-m side spans. The central components of the WSSN deployment are the Imote2 smart sensor platforms, a custom-designed multimetric sensor boards, base stations, and software provided by the Illinois Structural Health Monitoring Project (ISHMP) Services Toolsuite. In total, 70 sensor nodes and two base stations have been deployed to monitor the bridge using an autonomous SHM application with excessive wind and vibration triggering the system to initiate monitoring. Additionally, the performance of the system is evaluated in terms of hardware durability, software stability, power consumption and energy harvesting capabilities. The Jindo Bridge SHM system constitutes the largest deployment of wireless smart sensors for civil infrastructure monitoring to date. This deployment demonstrates the strong potential of WSSNs for monitoring of large scale civil infrastructure.

  • A smart tourism chatbot is needed as a user interface to efficiently provide smart tourism services such as recommended travel products, tourist information, my travel itinerary, and tour guide service to tourists. We have been developed a smart tourism app and a smart tourism information system that provide smart tourism services to tourists. We also developed a smart tourism chatbot service consisting of khaiii morpheme analyzer, rule-based intention classification, and tourism information knowledge base using Neo4j graph database. In this paper, we develop the Korean and English smart tourism Name Entity (NE) datasets required for the development of the NER model using the pre-trained language models (PLMs) for the smart tourism chatbot system. We create the tourism information NER datasets by collecting source data through smart tourism app, visitJeju web of Jeju Tourism Organization (JTO), and web search, and preprocessing it using Korean and English tourism information Name Entity dictionaries. We perform training on the KoBERT-CRF NER model using the developed Korean and English tourism information NER datasets. The weight-averaged precision, recall, and f1 scores are 0.94, 0.92 and 0.94 on Korean and English tourism information NER datasets.

  • Recently, magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) material and its devices have been developed and attracted a good deal of attention for their potentials in vibration control. Among them, a highly adaptive base isolator based on MRE was designed, fabricated and tested for real-time adaptive control of base isolated structures against a suite of earthquakes. To perfectly take advantage of this new device, an accurate and robust model should be built to characterize its nonlinearity and hysteresis for its application in structural control. This paper first proposes a novel hysteresis model, in which a nonlinear hyperbolic sine function spring is used to portray the strain stiffening phenomenon and a Voigt component is incorporated in parallel to describe the solid-material behaviours. Then the fruit fly optimization algorithm (FFOA) is employed for model parameter identification using testing data of shear force, displacement and velocity obtained from different loading conditions. The relationships between model parameters and applied current are also explored to obtain a current-dependent generalized model for the control application. Based on the proposed model of MRE base isolator, a second-order sliding mode controller is designed and applied to the device to provide a real-time feedback control of smart structures. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated in simulation through utilizing a three-storey benchmark building model under four benchmark earthquake excitations. The results verify the effectiveness of the proposed current-dependent model and corresponding controller for semi-active control of MRE base isolator incorporated smart structures.
