In smart health system, it is possible to check someone's health by analyzing data from wearable IoT device like smart watch. Smart building system aims to collect data from sensor such as humidity, temperature, human counter like that and control the building for energy efficiency, security, safety and so forth. Furthermore, smart city system can comprise several smart systems like smart building, smart health, smart mobility, smart energy and etc. In this paper, we propose multimedia IoT based intelligent emergency alarm system for smart city. In existing IoT based smart system, it communicates lightweight data like text data. In the past, due to network's limitations lightweight IoT protocol was proposed for communicating data between things but now network technology develops, problem which is to communicate heavy data is solving. The proposed system obtains video from IP cameras/CCTVs, analyses the video by exploiting AI algorithm for detecting emergencies and prevents them which cause damage or death. If emergency is detected, the proposed system sends warning message that emergency may occur to people or agencies. We built prototype of the intelligent emergency alarm system based on MQTT and assured that the system detected dangerous situation and sent alarm messages. From the test results, it is expected that the system can prevent damages of people, nature and save human life from emergency.

  • Learning from human behaviors in the real world is essential for human-aware intelligent systems such as smart assistants and autonomous robots. Most of research focuses on correlations between sensory patterns and a label for each activity. However, human activity is a combination of several event contexts and is a narrative story in and of itself. We propose a novel approach of human activity prediction based on event cognition. Egocentric multi-sensor data are collected from an individual's daily life by using a wearable device and smartphone. Event contexts about location, scene and activities are then recognized, and finally the users" daily activities are predicted from a decision rule based on the event contexts. The proposed method has been evaluated on a wearable sensor data collected from the real world over 2 weeks by 2 people. Experimental results showed improved recognition accuracies when using the proposed method comparing to results directly using sensory features.

  • Objective: We introduce a hand gesture segmentation method using a wrist-worn wearable device which can recognize simple gestures of clenching and unclenching ones' fist. Background: There are many types of smart watches and fitness bands in the markets. And most of them already adopt a gesture interaction to provide ease of use. However, there are many cases in which the malfunction is difficult to distinguish between the user's gesture commands and user's daily life motion. It is needed to develop a simple and clear gesture segmentation method to improve the gesture interaction performance. Method: At first, we defined the gestures of making a fist (start of gesture command) and opening one's fist (end of gesture command) as segmentation gestures to distinguish a gesture. The gestures of clenching and unclenching one's fist are simple and intuitive. And we also designed a single gesture consisting of a set of making a fist, a command gesture, and opening one's fist in order. To detect segmentation gestures at the bottom of the wrist, we used a wrist strap on which an array of infrared sensors (emitters and receivers) were mounted. When a user takes gestures of making a fist and opening one's a fist, this changes the shape of the bottom of the wrist, and simultaneously changes the reflected amount of the infrared light detected by the receiver sensor. Results: An experiment was conducted in order to evaluate gesture segmentation performance. 12 participants took part in the experiment: 10 males, and 2 females with an average age of 38. The recognition rates of the segmentation gestures, clenching and unclenching one's fist, are 99.58% and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: Through the experiment, we have evaluated gesture segmentation performance and its usability. The experimental results show a potential for our suggested segmentation method in the future. Application: The results of this study can be used to develop guidelines to prevent injury in auto workers at mission assembly plants.

  • Stretchable piezoelectric energy harvester (S-PEHs) based on composite materials are considered one of the potential candidates for realizing wearable self-powered devices for smart clothing and electronic skin. However, low energy conversion performance and expensive stretchable electrodes are major bottlenecks hindering the development and application of S-PEHs. Here, we fabricated the S-PEH by adopting the piezoelectric composites with enhanced stress transfer properties and kirigami-patterned textile electrodes. The optimum contents of piezoelectric BaTiO3 nanoparticles inside the carbon nanotube/ecoflex composite were selected as 30 wt% considering the trade-off between stretchability and energy harvesting performance of the device. The final S-PEH shows an output voltage and mechanical stability of ~5 V and ~3,000 cycles under repeated 150% of tensile strain, respectively. This work presents a cost-effective and scalable way to fabricate stretchable piezoelectric devices for self-powered wearable electronic systems.

  • The Microsoft Kinect is a motion sensing input device which is widely used for many motion recognition applications such as fitness, sports, and rehabilitation. Until now, most of remote rehabilitation systems with the Microsoft Kinect have allowed the user or patient to do rehabilitation or fitness by following the motion of a video screen. However in this paper we propose a smart remote rehabilitation system with the Microsoft Kinect motion sensor and a wearable ECG sensor which can allow patients to offer monitoring of the individual's performance and personalized feedback on rehabilitation exercises. The proposed noble smart remote rehabilitation is able to monitor and measure the state of the patient's condition during rehabilitation exercise, and transmits it to the prescriber. This system can give feedback to a prescriber, a doctor and a patient for improving and recovering motor performance. Thus, the efficient rehabilitation training service can be provided to patient in response to changes of patient's condition during exercise.
