  • The rotavator is attached to the three-point hitch at the rear of a tractor and uses the power take-off strength of the tractor to perform soil harrowing. During operation, the power transmitted to the gearbox of the rotavator varies with the soil characteristics and depth. These properties influence the reliability of the gearbox. In this study, actual load measurements and analyses were performed using a rotavator. In addition, the safety factor and fatigue life of the gearbox components were determined using the analysis results. Through analysis and tests, the contact pattern of the gear tooth surface was identified. The input power values of the gearbox were minimum and maximum at 54.5% and 84.5% of the tractor power, respectively. Based on the actual load analysis results, the strength and fatigue life of the gearbox components were satisfied. In addition, through the analysis and testing of the gear contact pattern, it was confirmed that a similar contact occurred. Through the analysis, the magnitude of the load acting on the tooth surface of the gear was confirmed.

  • Propofol is an anesthetic agent that gained wide use because of its fast induction of anesthesia and rapid recovery post-anesthesia. However, previous studies have reported immediate neurodegeneration and long-term impairment in spatial learning and memory from repeated neonatal propofol administration in animals. Yet, none of those studies has explored the sex-specific long-term physical changes and behavioral alterations such as social (sociability and social preference), emotional (anxiety), and other cognitive functions (spatial working, recognition, and avoidance memory) after neonatal propofol treatment. Seven-day-old Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats underwent repeated daily intraperitoneal injections of propofol or normal saline for 7 days. Starting fourth week of age and onwards, rats were subjected to behavior tests including open-field, elevated-plus-maze, Y-maze, 3-chamber social interaction, novel-object-recognition, passive-avoidance, and rotarod. Rats were sacrificed at 9 weeks and hippocampal protein expressions were analyzed by Western blot. Results revealed long-term body weight gain alterations in the growing rats and sex-specific impairments in spatial (female) and recognition (male) learning and memory paradigms. A markedly decreased expression of hippocampal NMDA receptor GluN1 subunit in female- and increased expression of AMPA GluR1 subunit protein expression in male rats were also found. Other aspects of behaviors such as locomotor activity and coordination, anxiety, sociability, social preference and avoidance learning and memory were not generally affected. These results suggest that neonatal repeated propofol administration disrupts normal growth and some aspects of neurodevelopment in rats in a sex-specific manner.

  • In smart cities, data from various kinds of sensors are collected and processed to provide smart services to the citizens. Noise information services with noise maps using the collected sensor data from various kinds of ubiquitous sensor networks is one of them. This paper presents a research result which generates three dimensional (3D) noise maps in real-time for smart cities. To make a noise map, we have to converge many informal data which include big image data of geographical Information and massive sensor data. Making such a 3D noise map in real-time requires the processing of the stream data from the ubiquitous sensor networks in real-time and the convergence operation in real-time. They are very challenging works. We developed our own methodology for real-time distributed and parallel processing for it and present it in this paper. Further, we developed our own real-time 3D noise map generation system, with the methodology. The system uses open source softwares for it. Here in this paper, we do introduce one of our systems which uses Apache Storm. We did performance evaluation using the developed system. Cloud computing was used for the performance evaluation experiments. It was confirmed that our system was working properly with good performance and the system can produce the 3D noise maps in real-time. The performance evaluation results are given in this paper, as well.

  • Guaranteed seafarer wage payment is essential to ensure a stable supply of seafarers. However, disputes over non-payment of wages to seafarers often occur. In this study, an automatic wage payment system was designed using a blockchain-based smart contract to resolve the problem of seafarers' wage arrears. The designed system consists of an information register, a matching processing unit, a review rating management unit, and wage remittance before deploying smart contracts. The matching process was designed to send an automatic notification to seafarers and shipowners if the sum of the weight of the four variables, namely wages, ship type/fishery, position, and license, exceeded a pre-defined threshold. In addition, a review rating management system, based on a combination of mean and median, was presented to serve as a medium to mutually fulfill the normal working conditions. The smart contract automatically fulfills the labor contract between the parties without an intermediary. This system will naturally resolve problems such as fraudulent advance payment to seafarers, embezzlement by unregistered employment agencies, overdue wages, and forgery of seafarers' books. If this system design is commercialized and institutionally activated, it is expected that stable wages will be guaranteed to seafarers, and in turn, the difficulties in human resources supply will be solved. We plan to test it in a local environment for further developing this system.

  • In Korea, the U.S. Tier-4 Final emission standards have been applied to agricultural machinery since 2015. This study was conducted to analyze the emission characteristics of agricultural tractors during plow tillage operations using PEMS (portable emissions measurement systems). The tractor working speed was set as M2 (5.95 km/h) and M3 (7.60 km/h), which was the most used gear stage during plow tillage operation. An engine idling test was conducted before the plow tillage operation was conducted because the level of emissions differed depending on the temperature of the engine (cold and hot states). The estimated level of emissions for the regular area (660 m2), which was the typical area of cultivation, was based on an implement width of 2.15 m and distance from the work area of 2.2 m. As a result, average emission of CO (carbon monoxide), THC (total hydrocarbons), NOx (nitric oxides), and PM (particulate matter) were approximately 6.17×10-2, 3.36×10-4, 2.01×10-4, and 6.85×10-6 g/s, respectively. Based on the regular area, the total emission of CO, THC, NOx, and PM was 2.62, 3.76×10-2, 1.63, and 2.59×10-4 g, respectively. The results of total emission during plow tillage were compared to Tier 4 emission regulation limits. Tier 4 emission regulation limits means maximum value of the emission per consumption power (g/kWh), calculated as ratio of the emission and consumption power. Therefore, the total emission was converted to the emission per power using the rated power of the tractor. The emission per power was found to be satisfied below Tier 4 emission regulation limits for each emission gas. It is necessary to measure data by applying various test modes in the future and utilize them to calculate emission because the emission depends on various variables such as measurement environment and test mode.

  • If we use a smartphone to analyze and detect falling, it is a huge advantage that the person with a sensor attached to one's body is free from awareness of difference and limitation of space, unlike attaching sensors on certain fixed areas. In this paper, we suggested effective posture analysis of smartphone users, and fall detecting system. Suggested algorithm enables to detect falling accurately by using the fact that instantaneous change of acceleration sensor is different according to user's posture. Since mobile applications working on smart phones are low in compatibility according to mobile platforms, it is a constraint that new development is needed which is suitable for sensor equipment's characteristics. In this paper, we suggested posture analysis algorithm using smartphones to solve the problems related to user's inconvenience and limitation of development according to sensor equipment's characteristics. Also, we developed fall detection system with the suggested algorithm, using hybrid mobile application which is not limited to platform.

  • Principles and mechanism of energy transduction of dielectric polymer materials are well known from the various smart material related publications. However their introduction to industrial actuator applications is limited mainly due to difficulties guarantee controllability and reliability. Most of the previous publications have elaborates energy transduction physics of chunk of polymer while development of construction methods for feasible actuators made of the material is rarely proposed. In the present article, a conceptual design of multi-DOF linear polymer actuator construction that is to be controllable with moderate level of control work os introduced. In addition, numerical models that are developed with a unified energy based approach are presented not only for basic working mechanism analysis of the polymetric soft actuator but for providing analytical foundation to expend the concept toward design of multi-DOF actuator controls.

  • Map building and position estimation capabilities are practically indispensable for a mobile robot to execute its given tasks in its working environments. An autonomous map building method and a smart localization method is proposed in our previous works. The experimental verifications are carried out in this paper. We applied the proposed algorithms to mobile service robots in large-scale indoor buildings. Experimental results show that our strategy is reliable and feasible in tough conditions like non-polygonal and dynamic environments. The advantages of the algorithms are well-illustrated through real experiments.
