Energy Management System(EMS) of Microgrid(MG) collects and analyzes data from devices in the microgrid to provide information to operators, users and other systems. In the middle of the process, it is required to securely provide information through both wired and wireless communication networks. In this paper, we design and implement a module that provides encryption and decryption, key management, key distribution, and message authentication functions, thus enabling the development of a system which is safe from the exposure and modulation of data potentially occurrable during data transmission between RTU(Remote Terminal Unit) and EMS. Our method can increase the efficiency of connection and key management for RTU by connecting a virtual device(VD) to RTU.

Innumerable microgrids would be operated independently by individual operators in a future smart grid. This kind of decentralized power system requires entirely different operation scheme in the actual power system and electricity market operation. Especially, frequency regulation is very important for successive energy trade in this multi-microgrid circumstance. This paper presents an optimal energy and reserve market participation strategy and operation strategy of energy storage system (ESS) by a microgrid operator (MGO). For definite evaluation of the proposed strategy, we postulate that the MGO should participate in the Power Exchange for Frequency Control (PXFC) market, which was devised by Maria Ilic and her coworkers and is suitable to the decentralized operation circumstances. In particular, optimal reserve capacity of the frequency control market and optimal market participation ratio of ESS between frequency control market and energy market are derived theoretically and evaluated by simulations utilizing Nordic Pool Elspot price data.
Distributed energy resources (DERs) are essential for coping with growing multiple energy demands. A microgrid (MG) is a small-scale version of the power system which makes possible the integration of DERs as well as achieving maximum demand-side management utilization. Hence, this study focuses on the analysis of optimal power dispatch considering economic aspects in a multi-carrier microgrid (MCMG) with price-responsive loads. This paper proposes a novel time-based demand-side management in order to reshape the load curve, as well as preventing the excessive use of energy in peak hours. In conventional studies, energy consumption is optimized from the perspective of each infrastructure user without considering the interactions. Here, the interaction of energy system infrastructures is considered in the presence of energy storage systems (ESSs), small-scale energy resources (SSERs), and responsive loads. Simulations are performed using GAMS (General Algebraic modeling system) to model MCMG, which are connected to the electricity, natural gas, and district heat networks for supplying multiple energy demands. Results show that the simultaneous operation of various energy carriers, as well as utilization of price-responsive loads, lead to better MCMG performance and decrease operating costs for smart distribution grids. This model is examined on a typical MCMG, and the effectiveness of the proposed model is proven.

This paper presents the design of Fuzzy PI controller that is used at BESS(Battery Energy Storage System) charging and discharging process for islanded operation in microgrid. Most of the PI controllers have fixed PI gains, but real-time updated gains are applied to PI controller using Fuzzy logic in this paper. The performances of suggested Fuzzy PI controller are simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC. As a result, output characteristics of ESS applied real-time updated gains to PI controller are faster than those of using fixed gains.

The construction of medium-and large-sized microgrid systems by unit area, which is being promoted worldwide, is being developed and expanded in the form of efficient operation of electric grids and independent operation in preparation for power emergencies. Therefore, for the development of the domestic electricity industry, it is urgent to analyze the current status and technology of relevant international standardization, and to make international standardization of domestic standard (draft) on the matters that need to be enacted and newly established. Campus microgrid implements smart grid element technologies such as Integrated Energy Management System(EMS), Distributed Power(DG), Energy Storage System(ESS), Demand Response(DR), and Electric Vehicle(EV) in a university campus. As a system that reduces energy use and improves energy use efficiency and energy independence, standardization is established to secure interoperability and reliability of such systems.
With increasing interests in renewables, more consumers are installing an energy storage system (ESS) in their backyards, and thus, the ESS will play a critical role in the emerging smart grid. Due to mechanical properties, however its operational dynamics must be well understood before connecting the ESS to the smart grid (and eventually to an IT system). To this end, we investigate charging and discharging processes in detail. This paper, then, proposes methods for four type tests (state of charge test, conversion efficiency test, response time test, and ramp rate test) that can assess the dynamics of the ESS. The proposed methods can capture accurate delay values of mechanical processes in the ESS, and it is expected for those values to help design real-time communication systems in the smart grid involving the ESS.

As the demand for electric power increases rapidly and the amount of fossil fuels decreases year by year, making use of renewable resources seem very necessary. However, due to the discontinuous nature of renewable resources and the hierarchical topology of existing grids, power quality and grid stability will deteriorate as more and more distributed generations (DGs) are connected to the grids. It is a good idea to combine local utilization, local consumption, energy storage and DGs to form a grid-friendly micro grid, these micro grids can then assembled into an intelligent power system - the smart Grid. It can optimize power flow and integrate power generation and consumption effectively. Most importantly, the power quality and grid stability can be improved greatly. This paper depicts how the smart grid addresses the current issues of a power system. It also figures out the key technologies and expectations of the smart grid.

In the face of global warming and resource depletion, a smart grid has been suggested as one way of contributing to abating the environment problems and increasing energy efficiency. Smart grids utilize renewable energy which has intermittent and irregular output power depending on weather conditions. In order to maintain stability and reliability of the power system, smart grids need to have complementary measures for the possible unstable system conditions. Cogenerating systems such as Combined Heat and Power(CHP) can be one good solution as it has capability of instantly increasing or decreasing output power. Therefore, this paper investigates the connectivity between Combined Heat and Power systems and smart grid technologies. The smart grid national roadmap formulated by South Korea Ministry of Knowledge and Economy and 'IEC Smart Grid Standardization Roadmap' are analyzed to extract related components of the smart grid for the CHP connection. Also, case studies on demonstration projects for smart grids with CHP systems completed or currently being implementing in the world are presented.

Compared to the past infrastructure networks, the current smart grid network can improve productivity and management efficiency. However, as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Internet-based standard communication protocol is used, external network contacts are created, which is accompanied by security vulnerabilities from various perspectives. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop an appropriate cybersecurity guideline that enables effective reactions to cybersecurity threats caused by the abuse of such defects. Unfortunately, it is not easy for each organization to develop an adequate cybersecurity guideline. Thus, the cybersecurity checklist proposed by a government organization is used. The checklist does not fully reflect the characteristics of each infrastructure network. In this study, we proposed a cybersecurity framework that reflects the characteristics of a microgrid network in the IIoT environment, and performed an analysis to validate the proposed framework.
This paper discusses the state-of-the-art techniques in real-time state estimation for the Smart Microgrids. The most popular method used in traditional power system state estimation is a Weighted Least Square(WLS) algorithm which is based on Maximum Likelihood(ML) estimation under the assumption of static system state being a set of deterministic variables. In this paper, we present a survey of dynamic state estimation techniques for Smart Microgrids based on Belief Propagation (BP) when the system state is a set of stochastic variables. The measurements are often too sparse to fulfill the system observability in the distribution network of microgrids. The BP algorithm calculates posterior distributions of the state variables for real-time sparse measurements. Smart Microgrids are modeled as a factor graph suitable for characterizing the linear correlations among the state variables. The state estimator performs the BP algorithm on the factor graph based the stochastic model. The factor graph model can integrate new models for solar and wind correlation. It provides the Smart Microgrids with a way of integrating the distributed renewable energy generation. Our study on Smart Microgrid state estimation can be extended to the estimation of unbalanced three phase distribution systems as well as the optimal placement of smart meters.
