  • China has already entered the aging society and is predicted to become a super-aged society in 2020. The recent studies identified that the elderly has more interest in 'Aging-in-Place' which emphasizes deinstitutionalization since welfare facilities such as care homes and silver towns have separated the elderly from their local communities where they used to live in. The aim of this research is to propose a promising way for smart housing services who support the elderly's living in their homes, China. This research is to investigate the elderly's life and to identify their demands on housings for implementing such smart services. The elderly's living in apartments in Luoyang city, China, were investigated through interviews using a questionnaire survey. The results show that smart housing services should be provided to support the elderly's health, safety, leisure activities, comfortable living, and social relationships sustainably. In addition, such smart housing services should be intuitive since the elderly need to use easily smart services for their autonomous life in their homes. The smart housing services should be developed in the direction of enhancing the elderly's healthy and desirable life, and lessening their discomforts due to aging.

  • Intelligent homes consist of ubiquitous sensors, home networks, and a context-aware computing system. These homes are expected to offer many services such as intelligent air-conditioning, lighting control, health monitoring, and home security. In order to realize these services, many researchers have worked on various research topics including smart sensors with low power consumption, home network protocols, resident and location detection, context-awareness, and scenario and service control. This paper presents the real-time metabolic rate estimation method that is based on measured heart rate for human adaptive appliance (air-conditioner, lighting etc.). This estimation results can provide valuable information to control smart appliances so that they can adjust themselves according to the status of residents. The heart rate based method has been experimentally compared with the location-based method on a test bed.

  • The smart home environment focuses on recognizing the context and physical entities. And this is mainly focused on the personalized service supplied conversational interactions. In this paper, we proposed the recommendation using the context awareness based information filtering that dynamically applied by the context awareness as well as the meta data in the smart home. The proposed method defined the context information and recommended the profited service for the user’s taste using the context awareness based information filtering. Accordingly, the satisfaction of users and the quality of services will be improved the efficient recommendation by supporting the distributed processing as well as the mobility of services. Finally, to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, this study applies to MovieLens dataset in the OSGi framework, and it is compared with the performance of previous studies.

  • In recent years, efficient energy management technologies are required, as environmental problems have emerged worldwide. In response to this, smart home services focused on efficient energy management technology seems to be emerging. And the integration of technology of user-oriented real-time energy monitoring and control systems is required. In this paper, we present a location-based green home service using smart phones for efficient energy management in a house. We design a green home network system to apply the green home service, and implement an integrated gateway system which connects and controls each appliance in a house. We develop appliance control services and indoor location services on smart phones, and determine whether user's occupancy of each room by measuring the location according to the variation of signal strength. In order to evaluate the performance of the energy savings, we have set up the scenarios of energy usage pattern and have compared the energy variation resulting from the application of the indoor location services with smart meters. A comparison of energy usage demonstrated that the energy saving of a house with the proposed location-based green home service was down up to 30%.

  • With the development of ubiquitous computing and the construction of infrastructure for one-to-one personalized services, the importance of context-aware services based on user's situation and environment is being spotlighted. The smart home technology connects real space and virtual space, and converts situations in reality into information in a virtual space, and provides user-oriented intelligent services using this information. In this paper, we proposed the discovery of the behavior sequence pattern using the mining in the smart home. We discovered the behavior sequence pattern by using mining to add time variation to the association rule between locations that occur in location transactions. We can predict the path or behavior of user according to the recognized time sequence and provide services accordingly. To evaluate the performance of behavior consequence pattern using mining, we conducted sample t-tests so as to verify usefulness. This evaluation found that the difference of satisfaction by service was statistically meaningful, and showed high satisfaction.

  • In the existing smart home, a separate platform was set up for each manufacturer to provide services through terminals. However, due to the development of Internet technology, various Internet devices and services have been launched, and there is a limit to the existing closed platforms for each manufacturer. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an object internet controller that integrates control of Internet devices in a smart home environment and provides various services through IFTTT. The proposed Internet controller is connected to the server via WiFi, and can control the Internet device and service of objects through the button input event. In addition, we expect to be able to provide a service environment that can create various smart home services by registering DIY products through open platform of oneM2M standard method.

  • This study aims to analyze exercise cases and issues using smart devices and technologies, and to present the development direction of a smart exercise environment suitable for the wellness life of active seniors with high activity and economic power unlike the existing silver generation. In the fitness industry, the subscription economy that regularly receives or uses necessary exercise tools, services, and digital content is expanding, and business models based on hardware sales and content subscription continue to emerge. In order to have value competitiveness as a platform that provides active seniors with integrated exercise services for health care, not only fitness centers, but also home training exercise equipment, fitness-related applications, and smart wearable device markets should be organically connected to form an expanded total platform. In order to have value competitiveness as a platform that provides active seniors with integrated exercise services for health care, not only fitness centers, but also home training exercise equipment, fitness-related applications, and smart wearable device markets should be organically connected to form an expanded total platform. The linkage of the digital healthcare function, which provides real-time changes to exercise programs based on continuous monitoring and feed back through wearable devices before, after, and during exercise by receiving and selecting exercise programs suitable for individual health status, is the differentiating factor in the smart fitness model.

  • Smart homes are expected to offer various intelligent services by recognizing the residents' life pattern, health, and feeling. One of the key issues for realizing the smart home is how to detect the locations of residents. Currently, the research effort is focused on two approaches: terminal-based and non-terminal-based method. The terminal-based method employs a type of device that should be carried by the resident while the non-terminal-based method has no such device. This paper presents a novel non-terminal-based approach using an array of pyroelectric infrared sensors (PIRs) that can detect residents. The feasibility of the system is evaluated experimentally on a test bed.

  • With the development of IOT technology and the expansion of ICT services recently, a variety of home network services have been advanced based on wired and wireless high speed telecommunication. Domestic and global companies have been studying on the innovative technology for the users using IOT based technology and the environment for the smart home services has been gradually developed. The users live their lives with more convenience due to the expansions and developments of smart phones. However, the threatening on the security of the smart home network had occurred by various attacks with the connection to the smart environment telecommunication, lack of applications on low powered and light weight telecommunication, and the problems of security guideline. In addition, the solutions are required for the new and variant attacking cases such as data forgery and alteration of the device for disguising approach with ill will. In this article, the safe communication protocol was designed using certification management technique based on AKI which supplemented the weakness of PKI, the existing certification system in the smart environment. Utilizing the signature technique based on ECDSA, the efficiency on the communication performance was improved, and the security and the safety were analyzed on the security threat under the smart home environment.
