Five smart grid projects was started with large scale at Jeju Island in South Korea from 2009, and smart-grid test-bed was started in Nov. 2010. The five projects are Smart Power Grid (SPG), Smart Renewable (SR), Smart Transportation (ST), Smart Place (SP) and Smart Electric Service (SES). Korea government constructed the smart grid public relations center at Nov. 2010 in Jeju Island and there will be continued the field operation and interface testing among five smart gird projects until May. 2013.
Smart grid aims to achieve efficient energy-related operations. Smart grid will become a central component of Smart city that aims to improve citizens' quality of life. This paper validates that smart grid at matured state is the state where smart grid is naturally integrated into smart grid. Also, this paper describes smart grid as an essential element of smart city. This paper discusses necessary social infrastructure and investigates necessary technological features.
In this paper, a methodology was proposed to reduce the electrical level and spatial size of the smart grid with distributed generations (DGs) to a scale in which the electrical phenomena and control strategies for disturbances on the smart grid could be safely and freely experimented and observed. Based on the design methodology, a micro smart grid simulator with a substation transformer capacity of 190VA, voltage level of 19V, maximum breaking current of 20A and size of $2{\times}2m^2$ was designed by reducing the substation transformer capacity of 45MVA, voltage level of 23kV and area of $2{\times}2km^2$ of the smart grid to over one thousandth, and also reducing the maximum breaking current of 12kA of the smart grid to 1/600. It was verified that the proposed design methodology and designed micro smart grid simulator were very effective by identifying how all of the fault currents are limited to within the maximum breaking current of 20A, and by confirming that the maximum error between the fault currents obtained from the fault analysis method and the simulation method is within 1.8% through the EMTP-RV simulation results to the micro smart grid simulator model.
Recently, smart grid has been considered a very important new energy delivery technology, and one that can help ensure a cleaner environment by making use of information and communication technology (ICT) in countries around the world. The many technological benefits smart grid offers is expected to bring about a huge change in the electric energy supply chain. In particular, smart grid with advanced ICT is likely to allow market agents to participate in the decision-making process in the restructured electricity industry, easily facilitating Homeostatic Utility Control. In this paper, we examine smart grid as a market externality, and then illustrate issues from the commercial market perspective as it relates to electricity market design. Finally, our paper identifies some of the impacts of smart grid on electricity market design, which may possibly be incorporated into the evolution of the electricity market, thus ensuring market efficiency.

As the demand for electric power increases rapidly and the amount of fossil fuels decreases year by year, making use of renewable resources seem very necessary. However, due to the discontinuous nature of renewable resources and the hierarchical topology of existing grids, power quality and grid stability will deteriorate as more and more distributed generations (DGs) are connected to the grids. It is a good idea to combine local utilization, local consumption, energy storage and DGs to form a grid-friendly micro grid, these micro grids can then assembled into an intelligent power system - the smart Grid. It can optimize power flow and integrate power generation and consumption effectively. Most importantly, the power quality and grid stability can be improved greatly. This paper depicts how the smart grid addresses the current issues of a power system. It also figures out the key technologies and expectations of the smart grid.

We should set up a policy objective to obtain consumer engagement in smart grid and analyze the key influencing factors in smart grid consumer engagement in oder to deploy smart grid successfully. It is because the successful deployment of smart grid depends on whether the end users accept the smart grid products and services. So far, There have been few studies in Korea which focus on the smart grid consumer engagement. Therefore, we carried out an literature review in terms of smart grid consumer engagement and tried to suggest related policy implications. As a result, we identified key influencing factors such as monetary benefits, environment-friendly characteristics, cyber security and understanding of smart grid. Futhermore, we suggested policy implications related to customer education, linkage between smart grid policies and other environmental ones, cyber security enhancement, etc.
This paper proposes a new fault isolation methodology for a smart protective device which plays an agent role on the smart grid distribution system with the distributed generation. It, by itself, determines accurately whether its protection zone is fault or not, identifies the fault zone and separates the fault zone through the exchange of fault information such as the current information and the voltage information with other protective devices using bi-directional communication capabilities on the smart grid distribution system. The heuristic rules are obtained from the structure and electrical characteristics determined according to the location of the fault and DG (Distributed Generation) when faults such as single-phase ground fault, phase-to-phase short fault and three-phase short fault occur on the smart grid distribution system with DG.

Despite the global promotion of Smart City, there is currently no standard for smart water grid development, and it is not possible to judge the success of Smart City. There is a clear need to establish the requirements and goals of the Smart Water Grid and accurately diagnose and improve the limitations and problems of the existing Smart Water Grid. For this purpose, it is very important to use the index suitable for Smart Water Grid goals. In this study, we developed Smart Water Grid Index which can be used to evaluate the target measurement and attainment of Smart Water Grid and can be utilized based on the implementation plan for Smart Water Grid in the future. Through the development of the Smart Water Grid Key Performance Index (SWG KPI), we will lay the groundwork for continuous capacity evaluation of the Smart Water Grid and improve the reliability of the Index. It is expected that it will be possible to prepare and evaluate a Challenge Evaluation Card for the planned Smart Water Grid by providing an evaluation table for grid competency evaluation.

In the face of global warming and resource depletion, a smart grid has been suggested as one way of contributing to abating the environment problems and increasing energy efficiency. Smart grids utilize renewable energy which has intermittent and irregular output power depending on weather conditions. In order to maintain stability and reliability of the power system, smart grids need to have complementary measures for the possible unstable system conditions. Cogenerating systems such as Combined Heat and Power(CHP) can be one good solution as it has capability of instantly increasing or decreasing output power. Therefore, this paper investigates the connectivity between Combined Heat and Power systems and smart grid technologies. The smart grid national roadmap formulated by South Korea Ministry of Knowledge and Economy and 'IEC Smart Grid Standardization Roadmap' are analyzed to extract related components of the smart grid for the CHP connection. Also, case studies on demonstration projects for smart grids with CHP systems completed or currently being implementing in the world are presented.
