  • With Internet of Things (IoT) technology, home environment becomes smarter than ever. Not only smart devices such as smart phone or smart TV, but also various IoT devices including sensor, smart thermostat, and smart scale has now become very common on the market. These devices have connectivity to the Internet, so that user can read data from the device or control the device using Internet technology. However, due to diversity of smart home requirements, device collaboration in smart home remains a challenging task still. Usually smart home is built with various technologies to fulfill its own purpose, and these purposes cover very wide area from controlling low-power sensor devices to controlling high-performance devices like smart TV and smart phone. This variety of smart home requirements makes smart home very complicated due to mixed network architecture, protocol and technology. In this paper, a framework to enable managing and collaborating heterogeneous IoT devices in smart home environment is proposed. Several programming models are defined in the proposed framework to make application development for heterogeneous devices more intuitive. The proposed framework has been implemented as a web service, and a case study with real-world smart home IoT devices is presented.

  • In the current smart device-based information environment, information utilization is closely related to social capital. Additionally, the smart divide that occurs owing to the differences in use of smart devices has a significant influence on social capital. In this respect, this research empirically analyzed how the smart divide affects social capital construction. The study found that the level of and proficiency in using smart devices and diversity of the information formats used through smart devices affect social capital construction. Further, people who fully utilize smart devices can enhance their participation in social activities, social networks, and reciprocal activities, leading people to construct social capital in a wider range. Contrarily, those who are unable to use smart devices adequately may be disadvantaged in terms of the opportunity to construct social capital and share public interests. Thus, to maximize the intrinsic value of social capital, it is necessary to consider the factors of the smart divide as a complicated and multi-faceted digital divide and the ways to utilize social capital as a driving force for integrating society, and not as a mechanism for dividing members of society.

  • Smart devices refer to various devices and control equipment such as health care devices, imaging devices, motor devices and wearable devices that use wireless network communication (e.g., Wi-fi, Bluetooth, LTE). Commercial services using such devices are found in a wide range of fields, including home networks, health care and medical services, entertainment and toys. Studies on smart devices have also been actively undertaken by academia and industry alike, as the penetration rate of smartphones grew and the technological progress made with the fourth industrial revolution bring about great convenience for users. While services offered through smart devices come with convenience, there is also various security threats that can lead to financial loss or even a loss of life in the case of terrorist attacks. As attacks that are committed through smart devices tend to pick up where attacks based on wireless internet left off, more research is needed on related security topics. As such, this paper seeks to design an access control method for reinforced security for smart devices. After registering and authenticating the smart device from the user's smart phone and service provider, a safe communication protocol is designed. Then to secure the integrity and confidentiality of the communication data, a management process such as for device renewal or cancellation is designed. Safety and security of the existing systems against attacks are also evaluated. In doing so, an improved efficiency by approximately 44% compared to the encryption processing speed of the existing system was verified.

  • This study examined the influences of infants' age for the first use of smart devices and the amount of time to use them on the externalizing problem behavior as well as investigated whether maternal managing behavior (setting rules on accessing smart devices and monitoring their child's use of smart devices) had moderating effects. The study participants consisted of 521 three to six year old infants (235 boys and 286 girls). The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and a hierarchical regression. The results of this study indicated that the age at first use of smart devices and maternal managing behavior had significant effects on the externalizing problem behavior of infants. The earlier the infants first used smart devices, the higher the level of externalizing problem behavior. Externalizing problem behavior was also found to be higher when the mothers showed no managing behavior. Second, maternal managing behavior moderated the relation between the age at first use of smart devices and the externalizing problem behavior of infants. The effects of the age at first use of smart devices on the externalizing problem behavior of infants were greater when the mothers did not set rules regarding the use of smart devices and did not supervise children when using smart devices.

  • In this paper, we design a covert channel based on instruction gadgets in smart sensing devices. Unlike the existing convert channels that usually utilize diverse physical characteristics or user behaviors or sensory data of smart sensing devices, we show that instruction gadgets could be exploited for covert channel establishment in smart sensing devices. In our devised covert channels, trojan smart sensing devices exchange attack packets in such a way that they encode an attack bit in attack packet to a series of addresses of instruction gadgets and decode an attack bit from a series of addresses of instruction gadgets.

  • A smart dust monitoring system is useful for obtaining information on rough terrain that is difficult for humans to access. One of ways to deploy sensors to gather information in smart dust environment is to use an aircraft in the Amazon rainforest to scatter an enormous amount of small and cheap sensors (or smart dust devices), or to use an unmanned spacecraft to throw the sensors on the moon's surface. However, scattering an enormous amount of smart dust devices creates the difficulty of managing such devices as they can be scattered into inaccessible areas, and also causes problems such as bottlenecks, device failure, and high/low density of devices. Of the various problems that may occur in the smart dust environment, this paper is focused on solving the bottleneck problem. To address this, we propose and construct a three-layered hierarchical smart dust monitoring system that includes relay dust devices (RDDs). An RDD is a smart dust device with relatively higher computing/communicating power than a normal smart dust device. RDDs play a crucial role in reducing traffic load for the system. To validate the proposed system, we use climate data obtained from authorized portals to compare the system with other systems (i.e., non-hierarchical system and simple hierarchical system). Through this comparison, we determined that the transmission processing time is reduced by 49%-50% compared to other systems, and the maximum number of connectable devices can be increased by 16-32 times without compromising the system's operations.
