  • This paper describes design of an algorithm for analyzing human activity using body-fixed 3-axis accelerometer in the small of the back. In the first step, we distinguish static and dynamic activity period using AC signal analysis. Then five postures were classified by applying the threshold in DC signal corresponding to the static activity period. Also, after comparison of average power and taking negative peak signal in the dynamic activity period, the four dynamic activities were classified by adaptive threshold method. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, the measured signals obtained from six subjects were applied to the proposed algorithm and the results were compared with the simultaneously measured video data. As a result, the activity classification rate of 95.7% on average was obtained. Overall results show that the proposed classification algorithm has a possibility to be used to analyze the static and dynamic physical activity.

  • There is a great demand of micro-actuators for mobile information devices such as SFF optical drives and mobile camera phones. However, conventional magnetic coils of electromagnetic motors are a major obstacle for miniaturization because of their complicated structures and large power consumption. In this paper, a linear ultrasonic motor to actuate focusing lens of mobile devices is proposed. The new actuator uses a ring type bimorph piezoelectric material, and $d_{31}$ mode is adopted for applying linear motion. The interaction between inertia force and friction force makes linear motion by high-frequency saw signal input. The saw signal gives steady forces on the one direction by asymmetric inclination property of the signal itself on time domain. A commercial FEM (ANSYS) was used in this investigation for simulating structural analysis, identification of dynamic property, such as resultant displacement and coupled analysis with piezoelectric material. To evaluate the performance of the new design, a prototype was manufactured and experiments were carried out. Experimental results show the actuator motion of 1.52 mm/s at 10 kHz input signal in 5 V.

  • Energy storage devices are necessary to obtain stable utilization of renewable energy sources. When black-out occurs, distributed renewable power sources with energy storage devices can operate under standalone mode as uninterruptable power supply. This paper proposes a dynamic response analysis with small-signal modeling for the standalone operation of a photovoltaic power generation system that includes a bidirectional charger/discharger with a battery. Furthermore, it proposes a DC-link voltage controller design of the entire power conditioning system, using the storage current under standalone operation. The purpose of this controller is to guarantee the stable operation of the renewable source and the storage subsystem, with the power conversion of a very efficient bypass-type PCS. This paper presents the operating principle and design guidelines of the proposed scheme, along with performance analysis and simulation. Finally, a hardware prototype of 1-kW power conditioning system with an energy storage device is implemented, for experimental verification of the proposed converter system.

  • In this paper, DC and small signal characteristics with different physical parameters are expected for p-HEMTs (Pseudomorphic High Electron Mobility Transistors) with different temperatures ranging from 300K to 623K which are widely used for a low noise and/or ultra high frequency device. A device of 0.2$\times$200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$dimension having very low noise has been chosen to extract the experimental data. Theoretical prediction has been obtained using a simulaor(HELENA) which needs experimental input data extracted from reverse engineering process. From the results, relation between structural parameters and temperature dependency of electrical characteristics are qualitatively explained to use in the design of descrete and integrated circuits to guarantee the optimal operation of the system.

  • In this paper, the multiple output forward converter forPC power supply with weighted voltage mode control which improves the characteristics of DC and transient responses is analyzed and designed. The power stage model of this converter including all the major parasitic components is derived and the small signal model is also derived. Determination of the weighting factors and a design procedure for the loop compensation are presented. Finally, the proposed controller is verified through the simulation of three output forward converter with SABER, and the experiment.

  • This paper presents the design of a Unified Power Flow Controller(UPFC) for enhancing the small signal voltage stability in the multi-machine power systems. Recently a lot of attention has been paid to the subject of dynamic stability. The paper deals with analysis of eigenvalue sensitivities with respect to parameters of UPFC Controller. The series branch of the UPFC is designed to damp the power oscillation during transients, while the shunt branch aims at maintaining the bus voltage. Comprehensive time-domain simulation studies using Pss/E show that the proposed robost UPFC controller can enhance the small signal stability efficiently in spite of the variations of power system operating conditions.

  • In this paper, eigenvalue perturbation theory and its applications for the augmented system matrix are described. This theory is quite useful in the cases where any change in a system parameter results in signifiant changes to most of the elements of the augmented matrix or where the forming of sensitivity matrix so complicate. And AMEP(augmented matrix eigenvalue perturbation) for the excitation system parameters are computed for analysis of small signal stability of KEPCO 215-machine 791-bus system.

  • An analytical 2-dimensional model to explain the small signal and noise properties of an AlGaN/GaN modulation doped field effect transistor has been developed. The model is based on the solution of two-dimensional Poisson's equation. The developed model explains the influence of Noise in ohmic region (Johnson noise or Thermal noise) as well as in saturated region (spontaneous generation of dipole layers in the saturated region). Small signal parameters are obtained and are used to calculate the different noise parameters. All the results have been compared with the experimental data and show an excellent agreement and the validity of our model.

  • TCSC can not only increase power flow but also damp low frequency oscillation by controlling firing angles of thyristors. But, a model considering voltage, current firing angles is not derived. This paper used a small signal model considirng these variables which was derived in paper [1]. TCSC model is combined with swing equation. Being related to rotor angles and firing angles of thyristors, current and synchronizing torque coefficient is reformulated. Because firing angles of thyristors can be controlled only twice within one period, swing equation is transformed to discrete time model. It is shown that low frequency oscillation can be damped by controlling firing angles in one machine infinite bus power system.
