  • Biomolecular computing is a new computing paradigm that uses biomolecules such as DNA for information representation and processing. The huge number of molecules in a small volume and the innate massive parallelism inspired a novel computation method, and various computation models and molecular algorithms were developed for problem solving. In the meantime, the use of biomolecules for information processing supports the possibility of DNA computing as an application for biological problems. It has the potential as an analysis tool for biochemical information such as gene expression patterns. In this context, a DNA computing-based model of a biomolecular perceptron has been proposed and the result of its experimental implementation was presented previously. The weight encoding and weighted sum operation, which are the main components of a biomolecular perceptron, are based on the competitive hybridization reactions between the input molecules and weight-encoding probe molecules. However, thermodynamic symmetry in the competitive hybridizations is assumed, so there can be some error in the weight representation depending on the probe species in use. Here we suggest a generalized model of hybridization reactions considering the asymmetric thermodynamics in competitive hybridizations and present a weight encoding method for the reliable implementation of a biomolecular perceptron based on this model. We compare the accuracy of our weight encoding method with that of the previous one via computer simulations and present the condition of probe composition to satisfy the error limit.

  • A water quality modeling study was performed for Chunggye stream during combined sewer overflow(CSO) period, utilizing the diagnostic system for water management in small watershed, CREEK-1(Cyber River for Environment and Economy in Korea). This system integrated geogaphic information system, data base, landscape ecological model(FRAGSTATS), watershed model(SWMM), water quality model (WASP5), and computer graphic. In this study, the watershed model and water quality model were extensively utilized so as to simulate water qualities and flow in Chunggye stream during wet periods. The Chunggye stream watershed was divided into 18 sub-basins in the watershed model and the stream reach into 11 segments in the water quality model. The watershed model was validated against field measurements of BOD, TN, TP, and flow at the downstream location, where the model results showed a reasonable agreement with the field measurements at all parameters. From this study, it was shown that the stream water quality would change along with elapsed time from rainfall start as well as rainfall intensity. The model results indicated that the water quality would significantly upgrade due to the first flush and high sewage ratio of CSO at the beginning of rainfall event, but become degraded along with the runoff increase due to dilution effect.

  • Software simulation has been widely used for the design and application development of a large-scale wireless sensor network. The degree of details of the simulation must be high to verify the behavior of the network and to estimate its execution time and power consumption of an application program as accurately as possible. But, as the degree of details becomes higher, the simulation time increases. Moreover, as the number of sensor nodes increases, the time tends to be extremely long. We propose an optimal-synchronous parallel discrete-event simulation method to shorten the time in a large-scale sensor network simulation. In this method, sensor nodes are partitioned into subsets, and each PC that is interconnected with others through a network is in charge of simulating one of the subsets. Results of experiments using the parallel simulator developed in this study show that, in the case of the large number of sensor nodes, the speedup tends to approach the square of the number of PCs participating in the simulation. In such a case, the ratio of the overhead due to parallel simulation to the total simulation time is so small that it can be ignored. Therefore, as long as PCs are available, the number of sensor nodes to be simulated is not limited. In addition, our parallel simulation environment can be constructed easily at the low cost because PCs interconnected through LAN are used without change.

  • Even though Internet backbone speeds have increased in the last few years due to projects like Internet 2 and NGI, many high performance distributed applications are able to achieve only a small fraction of the available bandwidth. The cause of such problem is due to a character of TCP/IP. The primary goal of this protocol is reliable data transmission. Therefore high speed data transmission didn't be considered when TCP/IP is designed. Hence several researchers have been studied in order to solve the problem of TCP/IP. One of these research results, parallel transfer technique, solves this problem to use parallel TCP connections on application level. Additionally, this technique is compatibility. Recently, these researchers have been studied a mechanism to decide the number of parallel TCP connections. However, some researchers reported the number of parallel TCP connection base on only empirical results. Although hardware performance of host affects transmission rate, the hardware performance didn't be considered in their works. Hence, we collect all data related to transmission rate, such as hardware state information (cpu utilization, interrupt, context switch). Then, we analyzed collected data. And, we suggest a new mechanism determining number of parallel TCP connections for maximization of performance based on our analysis.

  • This paper reports the political supporting platform, and the outcome evaluation model, which was developed for the Korean on-line game companies that have started to go abroad to publish their games. When they begin to sell their games, they have many difficulties in promoting in other countries including the USA & EU. They try to find solutions to solve these problems, but on-line games still do not have a successful business model because of their unique attributes and environmental features, even though they spent a lot of money and time to enter the international on line game market. Thus far, the local on-line game supporting policy has tried to improve the world competitiveness of local companies by doing diverse activities, such as Global Service Platform(GSP) service, international game competition, and globalization, marketing. On the other hand, there has been only a small number of fruitful results except for GSP. Therefore, in this paper, the result of GSP was verified using the Global on-line game Supporting Chain Model(GoGSCM), which is the new political supporting and evaluation model through survey targeting GSP participations. As a result, GSP was evaluated based on the compatibility, efficiency, effectiveness, and continuity.

  • The FAT (File Allocation Table) compatible file system has been widely used in mobile devices and memory cards because of its data exchangeability among numerous platforms recognizing the FAT file system. By the way. modern embedded systems have tough demands for instant power failure recovery and superior performance for multimedia applications. The key issue is how to achieve the goals of superior write performance and instant booting capability while controlling compatibility issues. To achieve the goals while controlling compatibility issues. we devised a temporary meta-data journaling scheme for a FAT compatible file system. Benchmark results of the scheme implemented in a FAT compatible file system shows that it really improves write performance of the FAT file system by converting small random write for meta-data update to a large sequential write in journaling area. Also, it provides natural way to implement the instant booting capability. Nevertheless, the file system compatibility is temporarily compromised by the scheme because it stores updated meta-data in the temporary journaling area rather than to their original locations. However, the compatibility can be fully recovered at any time by journal-flushing that copies meta-data in journaling area to their original locations. Generally, the journal-flushing is done before un-mounting a memory card so that it can be used in other mobile devices which recognized FAT file system but not the temporary meta-data journaling scheme.

  • The characteristics of ship induced waves caused by navigation become widely different from both ship's speed and water depth condition. The ship induced waves specially generated in coastwise routes frequently give rise to call unforeseen danger for swimmers and small boats as well as shoreline erosion or sea wall destruction in coastal zones. The main concern of ship induced wave study until now is either how to reduce ship resistance or how to manoeuvre the ship safely under a constant water depth in the view point of shipbuilding engineers. Moreover, due to the trends for appearance of the high speed ships at the shallow coastal water, we are confronted with the danger of damages from those ship induced waves. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the development of ship induced waves and the influence of their deformation effects according to its propagation ray. In present study, in order to predict the development of the ship induced waves and their propagation under the conditions of complicate and variable shallow water depth with varying ship's speed, we constructed a computer model using Boussinesq equation with a fixed coordinate system and verified the model results by comparison with experimental results. Additionally, the model was applied under the variable water depth based on actual passage and we then confirmed the importance of the variable water depth consideration.

  • The problem of model selection arises in a number of contexts, such as subset selection in linear regression, estimation of structures in graphical models, and signal denoising. This paper studies non-asymptotic model selection for the general case of arbitrary (random or deterministic) design matrices and arbitrary nonzero entries of the signal. In this regard, it generalizes the notion of incoherence in the existing literature on model selection and introduces two fundamental measures of coherence-termed as the worst-case coherence and the average coherence-among the columns of a design matrix. It utilizes these two measures of coherence to provide an in-depth analysis of a simple, model-order agnostic one-step thresholding (OST) algorithm for model selection and proves that OST is feasible for exact as well as partial model selection as long as the design matrix obeys an easily verifiable property, which is termed as the coherence property. One of the key insights offered by the ensuing analysis in this regard is that OST can successfully carry out model selection even when methods based on convex optimization such as the lasso fail due to the rank deficiency of the submatrices of the design matrix. In addition, the paper establishes that if the design matrix has reasonably small worst-case and average coherence then OST performs near-optimally when either (i) the energy of any nonzero entry of the signal is close to the average signal energy per nonzero entry or (ii) the signal-to-noise ratio in the measurement system is not too high. Finally, two other key contributions of the paper are that (i) it provides bounds on the average coherence of Gaussian matrices and Gabor frames, and (ii) it extends the results on model selection using OST to low-complexity, model-order agnostic recovery of sparse signals with arbitrary nonzero entries. In particular, this part of the analysis in the paper implies that an Alltop Gabor frame together with OST can successfully carry out model selection and recovery of sparse signals irrespective of the phases of the nonzero entries even if the number of nonzero entries scales almost linearly with the number of rows of the Alltop Gabor frame.

  • sump pump is a system that draws in water that is stored in a dam or reservoir. They are used to pump large amounts of water for cooling systems in large power plants, such as thermal and nuclear plants. However, if the flow and sump pump ratio are small, the flow rate increases around the inlet port. This causes a turbulent vortex or swirl flows. The turbulent flow reduces the performance and can cause failure. Various methods have been devised to solve the problem, but a correct solution has not been found for low water level. The most efficient solution is to install an anti-vortex device (AVD) or increase the length of the sump inlet, which makes the flow uniform. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the flow characteristics in a sump pump for different sump inlet lengths and AVD types. Modeling was performed in three stages based on the pump intake, sump, and pump. For accurate analysis, the grid was made denser in the intake part, and the grid for the sump pump and AVD were also dense. 1.2-1.5 million grid elements were generated using ANSYS ICEM-CFD 14.5 with a mixture of tetra and prism elements. The analysis was done using the SST turbulence model of ANSYS CFX14.5, a commercial CFD program. The conditions were as follows: H.W.L 6.0 m, L.W.L 3.5, Qmax 4.000 kg/s, Qavg 3.500 kg/s Qmin 2.500 kg/s. The results of analysis by the vertex angle and velocity distribution are as follows. A sump pump with an Ext E-type AVD was accepted at a high water level. However, further studies are needed for a low water level using the Ext E-type AVD as a base.
