  • In this paper, we propose a new moving mobile base station (MMBS) scheme for very low power and micro-size RMIMS (radio-interfaced micro information monitoring system) terminals. RMIMS terminals can be used in various application service areas such as pollution monitoring, environment surveillance, traffic monitoring, emergency monitoring (e.g., building, bridge, railroad breakdown), security monitoring (e.g., theft, alarm) and military application. For these applications based on wireless transmission technologies, sensor type RMIMS terminals must satisfy low cost and low power design (e.g., solar power, life limited battery) requirement. In RMIMS terminal design, this low power requirement limits transmission range of uplink or reverse link and means small cell size. Also these applications using RMIMS terminals may have a little bit non real-time traffic characteristic and low scattering density in service area.

  • This paper presents simulation and small-scale experimental tests of a fault current controller. Smart fault controller as proposed and proven conceptually in our previous work is promising technology for the smart power grid where distributed and even stochastic generation sources are prevalent and grid operations are more dynamic. Existing protection schemes simply limiting the fault current to the pre-determined set values may not show best performance and even lead to coordination failures, potentially leading to catastrophic failure. Thus, this paper designs fault current controller with a full bridge thyristor rectifier, embedding a superconducting coil for which the controller is electrically invisible during normal operation because the loss due to the coil is near-zero. When a fault occurs and the resulting current through the superconducting coil exceeds a certain value set intelligently based on the current operating condition of the grid, the magnitude of the fault current is controlled to this desired value by adjusting the firing angles of thyristors such that the overall system integrity is successfully maintained. Detailed time-domain simulations are performed and lab-scale testing circuits are built to demonstrate the desired functionality and efficacy of the proposed fault current controller.

An Analysis of Pile Foundation Load Transfer for Lightweight Pavement System in Clay Soil using Lab Chamber Test (모형챔버시험을 이용한 점성토 지반에 설치된 경량포장체용 기초의 하중전달 특성)

  • The main purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the feasibility of ligthweight pavement system with pile foundation on soft soil by laboratory small chamber test. In order to verify the stability of lightweight pavement system, the 1/30 scaled downed model system was tested at lab. The soft soil condition was simulated and group piles for skin friction resistance were used. Within the limited lab test, the settlements of pavement system were 0.86 mm for Case A, 0.70 mm for Case B, and 0.50 mm for Case C. The converted maximum settlement differential settlement were 25.8 mm and 10.8 mm. These values meet the inside of specification of Bridge Design Guide in Korea. The use of lightweight pavement systems on soft soils could be an alternative construction method on soft soils to reduce the challenges of conventional design and constructions.

Evaluation of Wake Galloping for Inclined Parallel Cables by Two-Dimensional Wind Testes Tests (2차원 풍동실험을 통한 평행 경사 실린더의 웨이크 갤로핑 평가)

  • The wake galloping phenomenon is evaluated for two cylinders via two-dimensional wind tunnel tests. The two cylinders are deployed parallel to the inclination of the vertical plane, which simulates the inclined stay cables of a cable-stayed bridge. The upstream and downstream displacements of the cylinder are observed with varying center distances between the two cylinders. The effect of structural damping on the mitigation of wake galloping is also investigated. The amplitude of the vibration is very sensitive to center distance between the two cylinders. The maximum amplitudes exceededthe allowable limit of the design guidelines for small center distances of less than or equal to six times the diameter of the cylinder. The overall results conformedto the conventional design practice for the wake galloping of parallel cables. It was found, however, that the increase in the damping was not effective in reducing the amplitude of the vibration in the wake galloping phenomenon.

  • Recently, due to the rapid growth of the leisure industry, demand for small-scale flotation and mooring pontoon platforms has been increasing rapidly. Standard rules for the design and structural safety of such structures have become necessary. This paper provides criteria that can be referenced when designing pontoon platforms, and also introduces structural safety evaluation procedures. In this study, the structural safety and stability of a 15-meter pontoon platform were investigated through structural design and finite element analysis. For platforms of less than 10 meters in length, a simple structural calculation can be used, but for platforms over 10 meters, a detailed structural strength review must be considered to meet safety guidelines defined in existing regulations. The structural strength of the initial design was examined and its structural safety was verified. For future research, it is an evaluative system was developed that can be used to examine the various loading conditions during design.

Stability Analysis for CWR on the Railway Bridges by Linearized Method (선형해석법을 이용한 교량상 장대레일의 안정성 해석 방법 연구)

  • The stability analysis for CWR is difficult in the theory itself because both geometric and material nonlinearity should be considered. Also the analysis results are varied according to the loading history. In contrast to the complexity in the theory, the analysis results for CWR on the railway bridges are quite simple and can be predicted because of a small buckling effect and its negligible nonlinearity. In this study, refined nonlinear analysis methods for the stability analysis of CWR on the railway bridges were developed which consider only material nonlinearity beeause the effects of geometric nonlinearity are nominal. In this study, the analysis results can be found within limited number of iterations with idealized linear force-displacement relationship. From the analysis result comparisons, it was found that the stability analysis for CWR on the railway bridges can be performed effectively by this method.

  • In recent bridge design, studies on application of external prestress have actively been conducted. When prestress is applied to steel structures, the limit value of elastic strain with large load increases with reduction of steels, this method is economic in cost. According to study by Brodka (1969), steel plate bridges with prestress has an effect on cost saving of about 15% compared with structures without prestress. For that reason, our country recently adopted this method in construction of temporary bridges and various engineering technologies have been developed which made stress correction, droop correction and long-span construction possible with relatively small cross sections. This study verifies the method of application of prestress in temporary steel structures, the influence of high-strength tendon arrangement and the effects of composite structures of steel plates and high-strength tendons based on existing method.

Magnetic Exchange Interactions in a 2D Grid-like Copper(II) Polymer with Bridging End-on Cyanato and Pyrazine Ligands: A DFT Study

  • The structure of a 2D grid-like copper(II) complex [Cu$(NCO)_2$(pyz)](pyz=pyrazine) (1) consists of 1D chains of Cu-pyz units connected by double end-on (EO) cyanato bridges. Each Cu(II) ion has a distorted octahedral coordination, completed by the four EO cyanato and two pyrazine ligands. Magnetic interactions through EO cyanato and pyrazine bridges in 1 are discussed on the basis of DFT broken-symmetry calculations at the B3LYP level. For model dicopper(II) complexes I (bridged by cyanato) and II (bridged by pyrazine), electronic structure calculations reproduce very well the experimental couplings for the S = 1/2 ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange-coupled 2D system: the calculated exchange parameters J are +1.25 $cm^{-1}$ and -3.07 $cm^{-1}$ for I and II, respectively. The $\sigma$ orbital interactions between the Cu $x^2-y^2$ magnetic orbitals and the nitrogen lone-pair orbitals of pyrazine are analyzed from the viewpoint of through-bond interaction. The energy splitting of 0.106 eV between two SOMOs indicates that the superexchange interaction should be antiferromagnetic in II. On the other hand, there are no bridging orbitals that efficiently connect the two copper(II) magnetic orbitals in I because the HOMOs of the basal-apical NCO bridge do not play a role in the formation of overlap interaction pathway. The energy separation in the pair of SOMOs of I is calculated to be very small (0.054 eV). This result is consistent with the occurrence of weakly ferromagnetic properties in I.

Magnetism during adsorption of oxygen in Pt segregated $Pt_3Ni$ (111): Density Functional Study

  • Limited understanding of the surface properties of $Pt_3Ni$ for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has motivated the study of magnetic properties and electronic structures of Pt segregated $Pt_3Ni$ (111) surface during adsorption of oxygen molecule on it. The first principle method based on density functional theory (DFT) is carried out. Nonmagnetic Pt has induced magnetic moment due to strong hybridization between Ni 3d and Pt 5d. It is found that an oxygen molecule prefers bridge site with Pt rich subsurface environment for adsorption on the surface of Pt segregated $Pt_3Ni$ (111). It is seen that there is very small charge transfer from $O_2$ to Pt. The curve of energy versus magnetic moment of the oxygen explains the magnetic moments in transition states. We found the dissociation barrier of 1.07eV significantly higher than dissociation barrier 0.77eV on Pt (111) suggesting that the dissociation is more difficult on Pt segregated $Pt_3Ni$ (111) surface. The spin polarized densities of states are presented in order to understand electronic structures of Pt and $O_2$ during the adsorption in detail.

Analysis of Tidal Effect on the Han and Imjin River (한강 및 임진강의 조위영향분석)

  • Effects of the West sea tide to the flow of the Han and Imjin river during floods and normal seasons was analyzed by the hydraulic model. Tidal effect diagrams which represent the inter-relationships between flow of two livers and tide of Wolgot were developed using the results of analysis. At Jamsu and Hangang bridge, the stage rise due to the tide can be reached about 2m at maximum when the discharge of Paldang dam is less than 5,000cms, and the stage rise is very small when the discharge of Paldang dam is more than 15,000cms. In the Imjin river, the stage rise can be reached about 3.5m at maximum when the discharge is below 5,000cms, and can be neglected when the discharge is over 5,000cms.
