  • This study has been performed to predict beam absorption with analysis of temperature field by using a FEM in co /sab 2/ laser hardening and to invesrigate into some effects of power density and travel speed of laser beam on the microstructure and hardness of ductile cast iron treated by laser surface hardening technique. Optical micrograph has shown that large martensite and small amount of retained austenite appear in inside hardened zone. Hardness measurement has revealed that the range of maximum hardness value is Hv=415 .+-. 10. The power density increases and the travel speed decreases, the depth of hardened zone increases due to increase of input power density.

  • The spatial coherence function of laser beam was measured by using a Sagnac interferometer and self referencing technique. For laser beam passing through a narrow slit, absolute value of measured spatial coherence function becomes more symmetric as the slit size is reduced. For diverging beams, the spatial coherence function shows fast oscillations in its real and imaginary parts. We explain this by using a Gaussian Schell-model. One can use this measurement method to study and characterize the property of light field coming out of small sample.

  • Holographic interferometry is a useful whole-field nondestructive testing for measuring deformations and vibrations of engineering structure. A diverging beam is used as a light source int the most of holographic interferometer practically. For a relatively small object the optical arrangement using a collimated light source has no difficulty in use technically, but for a large object it is difficult to use a collimated beam. In this study we calculate the error of measured displacement from the sensitivity vector dominated by the geometry of optical arrangement for holographic interferometer and show the result obtained with 2-D plots. A Plane surface and a cylindrical surface were chosen as objects to be calculated and computer analysis was carried out for the cases of a diverging beam and a collimated one.

  • It is not efficient and scarcely out of the question to use commercial expensive electron beam lithography system widely used for semiconductor fabrication process for the manufacturing application field of various devices in the small business scope. Then scanning electron microscope based electron beam machining system is maybe regarded as a powerful model can be used for it simply. To get a complete suite of thus proper system, proper chamber with high vacuum condition is necessarily required more than anything else to modify scanning electron microscope. In this study, special chamber unit using rotary pump and diffusion pump to obtain high vacuum degree was designed and manufactured and various evaluation tests fur recognize the vacuum characteristic were accomplished.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of field-of-view (FOV) size on the gray values derived from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) compared with the Hounsfield unit values from multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scans as the gold standard. Materials and Methods: A radiographic phantom was designed with 4 acrylic cylinders. One cylinder was filled with distilled water, and the other 3 were filled with 3 types of bone substitute: namely, Nanobone, Cenobone, and Cerabone. The phantom was scanned with 2 CBCT systems using 2 different FOV sizes, and 1 MDCT system was used as the gold standard. The mean gray values(MGVs) of each cylinder were calculated in each imaging protocol. Results: In both CBCT systems, significant differences were noted in the MGVs of all materials between the 2 FOV sizes(P<.05) except for Cerabone in the Cranex3D system. Significant differences were found in the MGVs of each material compared with the others in both FOV sizes for each CBCT system. No significant difference was seen between the Cranex3D CBCT system and the MDCT system in the MGVs of bone substitutes on images obtained with a small FOV. Conclusion: The size of the FOV significantly changed the MGVs of all bone substitutes, except for Cerabone in the Cranex3D system. Both CBCT systems had the ability to distinguish the 3 types of bone substitutes based on a comparison of their MGVs. The Cranex3D CBCT system used with a small FOV had a significant correlation with MDCT results.

  • Experimental measurements of dose characteristics with pentagonal applicator at nominal energy of 4, 6, 9, 12 and 15 MeV electron beam were performed for intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) in ML-15MDX linear accelerator. This paper presents the percent depth dose, surface dose, beam flatness and output factors of using the IORT applicator in different electron beam energy. The output factor showed as a 24 percent higher in IORT applicator than that of reference $10{\times}10cm^2$ applicator. The surface dose of using the IORT applicator showed 7.7 and 2.7 percent higher than that of reference field in 4 and 15 MeV electron beam, respectively. In our experiments, the variation of percent depth dose was very small but the output factor and flatnees at 0.5 cm depth have showed a large value in IORT applicator.

  • A real-time digital time-stamp sorting algorithm used in the In-Beam positron emission tomography (In-Beam PET) is presented. The algorithm is operated in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) and a small amount of registers, MUX and memory cells are used. It is developed for sorting the data of annihilation event from front-end circuits, so as to identify the coincidence events efficiently in a large amount of data. In the In-Beam PET, each annihilation event is detected by the detector array and digitized by the analog to digital converter (ADC) in Data Acquisition Unit (DAQU), with a resolution of 14 bits and sampling rate of 50 MS/s. Test and preliminary operation have been implemented, it can perform a sorting operation under the event count rate up to 1 MHz per channel, and support four channels in total, count rate up to 4 MHz. The performance of this algorithm has been verified by pulse generator and 22Na radiation source, which can sort the events with chaotic order into chronological order completely. The application of this algorithm provides not only an efficient solution for selection of coincidence events, but also a design of electronic circuit with a small-scale structure.

  • The energy harvesting using smart materials has been extensively investigated to supply electric power to wireless sensor systems. In this paper, the energy harvesting using eddy current was studied with the integrated magnetic cantilever beam system. If a large conductive metal plate moves through a magnetic field which intersects perpendicularly to the sheet, the magnetic field will induce small rings of current which will actually create internal magnetic fields opposing the change. This eddy current that was induced in the coiled conductive sheet from the mechanical vibration was converted to chemical energy by charging batteries. The experimental results show that the eddy current generated the electric power up to max 31.2mW. Additionally the vibration reduction of the mechanical cantilever beam was observed by the energy dissipation in the electro-magnetic coupled system. The present result shows that the vibration level of the first natural frequency was reduced up to 7.7dB
