Synthesis of Magnetic Powder in the Sm-Fe-N System by the Reduction-Diffusion Process (환원-확산법에 의한 Sm-Fe-N계 자성분말 제조)

  • In the present study, the reduction-diffusion method was employed to produce Sm-Fe alloy powder. It was confirmed that the amount of unreacted ${\alpha}-Fe$ in $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ matrix gradually decreased as the percentage of $Sm_2O_3$ increased. $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ single-phase powder was produced by the reduction-diffusion method with 40% excess $Sm_2O_3$. The Ca and Oxygen contents of the powder were approximately 300 ppm and 1600 ppm, respectively, after washing and acid treatment. By a subsequent nitrogenation, $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x$ magnetic powders were produced. The coercivity of the powder increased with decreasing of the particle size by ball milling, and the highest coercivity of 2850 Oe was obtained after milling for 10 hours.

Effect of Process Temperature on the Sm2Fe17 Alloying Process During a Reduction-Diffusion Process Using Fe Nanopowder (Fe 나노분말을 사용한 환원-확산공정에서 Sm2Fe17 합금상형성에 미치는 공정온도의 영향)

  • This study investigated the effect of process temperature on the alloying process during synthesis of $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ powder from ball-milled samarium oxide ($Sm_2O_3$) powders and a solid reducing agent of calcium hydrides ($CaH_2$) using iron nanopowder (n-Fe powder) by a reduction-diffusion (R-D) process. The $n-Fe-Sm_2O_3-CaH_2$ mixed powders were subjected to heat treatment at $850{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ in $Ar-H_2$ for 5 h. It was found that the iron nanopowders in the mixed powders are sintered below $850^{\circ}C$ during the R-D process and the $SmH_2$ is synthesized by a reduced Sm that combines with $H_2$ around $850^{\circ}C$. The results showed that $SmH_2$ is able to separate Sm and $H_2$ respectively depending on an increase in process temperature, and the formed $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ phase on the surface of the sintered Fe nanopowder agglomerated at temperatures of $950{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ in this study. The formation of the $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ layer is mainly due to the diffusion reaction of Sm atoms into the sintered Fe nanopowder, which agglomerates above $950^{\circ}C$. We concluded that nanoscale $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ powder can be synthesized by controlling the diffusion depth using well-dispersed Fe nanopowders.

The Effect of Post Oxidation on Corrosion Characteristics of Gas Nitrocarburised Carbon Steels (Nitrocarburising 처리된 탄소강의 내식특성에 미치는 Post Oxidation 효과)

  • The effect of post oxidation, water-quenched after holding in air for 5~420 seconds or cooling or furnace cooling, on corrosion resistance and phase formation characteristics of the surface layer of SM20C and SM45C carbon steels after gas nirtrocarbursing in the $NH_3-5%CO_2-N_2$ gas atmosphere at $580^{\circ}C$ for 3hours is studied. The compound layers of two steels consist of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}N$, ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ and $Fe_3O_4$, phases, however, the quantity of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ phase increases for the furnace cooled specimen compared to that of air cooling specimen. With increasing $NH_3$ content in the gas mixture and also increasing the keeping time in the air after gas nitrocarburising, the ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}N$ phase of compound layer increases, while the decreased current density recognizing the improvement of corrosion resistance are shown. the passive current density of SM45C steel is lower than that of SM20C steel at the same nitrocarburising conditions.

  • 회토류계 영구자석은 종래의 Ferrite계나 Alnico계와 비교해서 대단히 강하여, 전기전자부품의 소형화에 크게 기여하고 있다. 최근에는, 전자기기산업 이외의 분야에 있어서도 그의 응용이 확대되어가고 있는 추세로 자성재료의 생산액은 매년 증가하고 있다. 회토류계 영구자석재료의 연구는 1960년대에 시작되어 Sm $Co_{5}$, Sm$_{2}$ $Co_{17}$ 화합물의 등장을 거쳐 현재는 1982년데 Sagawa 및 Croat가 독자적으로 발견한 Nd$_{2}$ Fe$_{14}$B 자석이 주류로 되고 있다. 그렇지만 이 화합물에는 다른 영구자석에 비하여 큐리온도가 낮은 결점이 있어서, 아직도 새로운 화합물의 탐색이 계속되고 있다. 그 중에서도, 1990년대에 Coey에 의해서 최초로 학회지에 보고되어진 Sm$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$N$_{x}$는, Nd$_{2}$Fe$_{14}$B와 같은 정도의 이론 최대에너지급, Sm $Co_{5}$에 대등한 거대한 이방성자장, 750K에 달하는 큐리온도등의 우수한 성질을 갖고 있어 Nd$_{2}$Fe$_{14}$B를 극복하는 자성재료로서 큰 기대가 되어진다. 되어진다.진다.

Phase Relationships and Magnetic Properties of HDDR-treated $Sm_3$(Fe,Co,V)$_{29}$ Alloy

  • Phase relationships of the HDDR (hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption and recombination)-treated Sm$_3$(Fe,M)$_{29}$-type alloy with chemical composition of Sm$_{9}$Fe$_{65}$ $Co_{20}$V$_{6}$ were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and by thermomagnetic analysis (TMA). The alloy was disproportionated into a mixture of $SmH_{x}$ and $\alpha$-Fe at high temperature under hydrogen gas. The disproportionated material was recombined into a mixture of Sm-(Fe,M) (M = Co and/or V) and $\alpha$-Fe phases. The structure of the Sm-(Fe,M) phase was dependent upon the recombination conditions, and a detailed phase diagram showing the phase relationships in the HDDR-treated alloy has been established. The Sm-(Fe,M) phase in material recombined above $900^{\circ}C$ had the $Sm_2Fe_{17}$-type structure, and it exhibited the $SmFe_{7}$-type structure when recombined at temperatures ranging from $700^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$. Recombination below $650^{\circ}C$ led to the $SmFe_3$-type structure of the Sm-(Fe,M) phase. Curie temperatures of the Sm-(Fe,M) phases in the recombined material were significantly higher than those of the corresponding stoichiometric phases. It was suggested that the chemical composition of the Sm-(Fe,M) phases may be significantly different from that of the corresponding stoichiometric phases. All the HDDR-treated $Sm_{9}Fe_{65}Co_{20}V_{6}$ materials showed the soft magnetic features regardless of the phase constitution.n.

Physical and Chemical Properties of (Sr,Mg)FeO3-y System Heat-treated in N2 (N2 분위기에서 열처리한 (Sr,Mg)FeO3-y계의 물리 및 화학적 성질)

  • The perovskite solid solutions of the $Sr_{1-x}Mg_xFe{^{3+}}_{1-{\tau}}Fe{^{4+}}_{\tau}O_{3-y}$ system (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were synthesized in $N_2$ at $1,150^{\circ}C$. X-ray powder diffraction study assured that all the four samples had cubic symmetries(SM-0: $3.865{\AA}$, SM-1: $3.849{\AA}$, SM-2: $3.833{\AA}$, and SM-3: $3.820{\AA}$) and that the lattice volumes decreased steadily from $57.7{\AA}^3$ to $55.7{\AA}^3$ with x values. The nonstoichiometric chemical formulas were determined by Mohr salt analysis and with the increase of x values the amounts of $Fe^{4+}$ ion and oxygen were decreased simultaneously. Thermal analysis showed that SM-0 started to lose its oxygen at $450^{\circ}C$ and SM-1, Sm-2, and SM-3 began to lose their oxygen at around $350{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. SM-0 showed almost reversible weight change in the cooling process. All the samples exhibited semiconducting behaviors in the temperature range of $10{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. Conductivities of the 4 samples were decreased in the order of SM-0, SM-1, SM-2, and SM-3 at constant temperature. The activation energies of the conductions were in the range of 0.176 eV~0.244 eV.

Study on the Effects of Hydrogen Decrepitation on the Formation of Sm2Fe17Nx-type Material

  • In an attempt to find an effective production way of the$ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_{x-}type material, the Sm_2Fe_{17-}$type alloy with chemical composition of Sm 22.7 wt.%, Fe72.3 wt.% Nb 5.0wt.% was subjected to a HD (hydrogen decrepitation) treatment prior to a nitrogenation, and its effect on the formation of the nitride material was investigated. The nitrogenation behaviours of the alloy were investigated using a TPA(thermopiezic analysis), TMA, and DTA under nitrogen gas, and XRD. It has been found that the previous HD treatment significantly facilitated the formation of $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_{x-}$type nitride, and this was accounted for by the clean surface and the finer particle size of the powder caused by the HD treatment. It has also been found that the hydrogen atoms existing in the initial HD-treated alloy were removed almost completely during the nitrogenation. The heat output associated with the nitrogenation of the previously HD-treated alloy was found to be significantly smaller than that of the as-cast alloy.

  • The observed high-field magnetization curves of $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}N_{3.0}$ at 4.2 K and 296 K are well reproduced by the calculation using the Sm-Fe exchange field $2\mu\textrm{B}H_{ex}\;=\;320\;K$ and two crystalline electric field parameters ${A_{0}}^{2}=\;-910\;K$ and ${A_{1}}^{0}=\;200\;K$. The calculation shows that during the magnetization process along the hard axis at 4.2 K, the Sm moment rotates toward the direction antiparallel to H when H < 110 kOe and then returns to the field direction with further increase of the field. At 296 K, the Sm moment rotates toward the direction antiparallel to H monotonously with increasing field and finally becomes antiparallel to H when $H{\geq}H_{A}=210\;kOe$. The particular magnetization process of the Sm moment can be explained by the field-induced noncollinear coupling between the spin and orbital moments of the Sm ion.

[ $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ ] Prepared by Calciothermic Reduction-Diffusion Using Different Iron Powders

  • This paper compares the effect of using different types of iron powders for the preparation of $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ by calciothermic reduction-diffusion (CRD). Three types of iron powder were used: carbonyl, sponge and water atomized. The results show that, when immediately nitrogenated after the CRD process, $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ prepared from sponge and water atomized iron powders yield $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_3$-magnets with a high degree of texture. However, after a suitable treatment with hydrogen followed by nitrogenation, $Sm_2Fe_{17}$-powders made from Carbonyl iron produce magnets with the best quality regarding coercivity, remanence and degree of texture.
