  • Porous ceramics are widely used for applications such as catalysis supports, gas distributors and filters such as DPF. For these purpose, it is important to have proper porosity controlling pore structure while maintaining mechanical and thermal properties. In this work, we have prepared the porous ceramic structures made of reaction bonded silicon nitride with hierarchical pore structures. Uni-directionally aligned pore channels, which are mostly filled with ${\beta}$-Si3N4 whiskers, were achieved by an ice-templating method. The structures of the pore channels and the walls are controllable by the processing conditions, such as solid concentration, freezing rate of the slurry, and additives. We have investigated and characterized the influences of the conditions on the microstructures and the properties, such as porosity, pore size distribution, lamellar thickness, wavelength, and orientations. The compressive strength test and flow test was performed to determine the structural integrity and air permeability.

  • Anatase particles of titanium dioxide were prepared from $TiCl_4$ aqueous solution by using an electro-dialysis [ED] process. For the preparation of an aqueous solution of $TiCl_4$ precipitates, $TiCl_4$ liquid frozen in ice was transferred to a neck flask and then hydrolyzed using deionized [DI] $H_2O$. During the hydrolysis of the $TiCl_4$ solution at $0^{\circ}C$, a slurry solution of $TiOCl_2$ was obtained and the color changed from red to orange. The ED process was applied for the removal of chlorine content in the slurry solution. Two kinds of hydrolyzed slurry solution with lower [$Ti^{4+}$] and higher [$Ti^{4+}$] were sampled and the ED process was applied for the samples according to the removal time of [$Cl^-$]. With de-chlorination, the solution status changed from sol to gel and the color quickly changed to blue. Finally, white crystalline powders were formed and the phase was confirmed by XRD to be anatase crystallites. The morphology of the hydrous titania particles in the solution was observed by FE-SEM. The hydrous titania particles were nano-crystalline, and easily coagulated with drying.

  • Two approaches for the fabrication of tailored powder composites with specially distributed pore-grain structure and chemical composition are investigated. Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) followed by microwave sintering is employed to obtain functionally graded materials (FGM) by in-situ controlling the deposition bath suspension composition. $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ and zeolite FGM are successfully synthesized using this technique. In order to fabricate an aligned porous structure, unidirectional freezing followed by freeze drying and sintering is employed. By controlling the temperature gradient during freezing of powder slurry, a unidirectional ice-ceramic structure is obtained. The frozen specimen is then subjected to freeze drying to sublimate the ice. The obtained capillary-porous ceramic specimen is consolidated by sintering. The sintering of the graded structure is modeled by the continuum theory of sintering.

  • Supercooled type ice slurry system is hard to keep a proper supercooling degree when solution becomes supercooling state. This is the reason of the ice blockage in pipe or cooling part due to an unstable cooling state. In this study, a cooling experiment was performed to pressurized solution in a stationary state. The behaviors during the supercooled aqueous solution were investigated at fixed flow rate of brine and aqueous solution of ethylene glycol 7 mass%. Also the effect to the freezing point of supercooled aqueous solution was investigated to the different pressure 101, 202, 303, and 404 kPa. At results, the pressure of the aqueous solution in the cylinder increased the supercooling degree increased and dissolution of supercooled point decreased.
