  • In the present study, a special attention has been paid to the effects regarding the use of different superplasticizers in different dosages. To do so, 36 mixes of normal and self-compacting concrete with two water/binder ratios of 0.35 and 0.45, four different types of superplasticizer including melamine-formaldehyde, naphthalene-formaldehyde, carboxylic-ether and poly-carboxylate, four different superplasticizer/cement ratios of 0.4%, 0.8%, 1.2% and 1.6% and two silica fume/cement ratios of 0% and 10% have been cast. Moreover, the initial and final setting time of the pastes have been tested. For self-compacting mixes, flow time, slump flow, V-funnel, J-ring and L-box tests have been carried out as well as testing the compressive strength and rupture modulus. For normal concrete mixes, slump test has been conducted to assess the workability of the mix and then for each mix, the compressive strength and rupture modulus have been determined. The results indicate that in addition to the important role of superplasticizer type and dosage on fresh state properties of concrete, these parameters as well as the use of silica fume could affect the hardened state properties of the mixes. For instance, the mixes whose superplasticizer were poly-carboxylic-ether based showed better compressive and tensile strength than other mixes. Besides, the air contents showed robust dependency to the type of the superplasticizer. However, the use of silica fume decreased the air contents of the mixes.

  • Ultra-High Strength Concrete (UHSC) demands a clear presentation of its mechanical properties, as distinct from normal strength concrete, and an evaluation of the serviceability of high-rise buildings that use ultra-high strength concrete. Ultra-high strength concrete fck=150MPa was manufactured with pre-mix cement, and an experimental study was conducted to evaluate the mixing properties and compressive strength, with the major variables being unit cement contents, water-binder ratio, and type of pre-mix cement. The test result showed that 150MPa concrete requires about 6~7 minutes of mixing time until each of the materials (ordinary Portland cement, silica fume, blast-furnace slag powder and anhydrite) are sufficiently revitalized. The slump flow of fresh concrete was shown to be about 700~800mm with the proper viscosity. The average value of concrete compressive strength was shown to be about 70% in 7 days, 85% in 14 days, and 95% in 28 days, for 56 days of concrete material age.

  • Cement has been traditionally used as a main binding material of high ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of using alkali-activated slag and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers for manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced cementless composites. Two mixture proportions with proper flowability and mortar viscosity for easy fiber mixing and uniform fiber dispersion were selected based on alkali activators. Then, the slump flow, compression, uniaxial tension and bending tests were performed on the mixes to evaluate the basic properties of the composites. The cementless composites showed an average slump flow of 465 mm and tensile strain capacity of approximately 2% of due to formation of multiple micro-cracks. Test results demonstrated a feasibility of manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced composites without using cement.

  • This research investigates experimentally an effect on the properties of the high flowing concrete to be poured in the under-ground slurry wall of Inchon LNG receiving terminal(#213,214-TK) according to variations of concrete materials. Variables for sensitivity test were selected items as followings. 1) Concrete temperature (3cases), 2) Unit water (5cases), 3) Fineness modulus of fine aggregate (5cases), 4) Particle size of lime stone powder (3cases), 5) Replacement ratio of blast-furnace slag (4cases) and 6) Addition ratio of high range water reducing agent (5cases). And fresh conditions of the super flowing concrete should be satisfied with required range including slump flow(65$\pm$5cm), 50cm reaching time of flow(4~10sec), V-lot flowing time(10~ 20sec), U-box height(min. 300mm) and air content(4$\pm$1%). As results for sensitivity test, considered flow-ability, self-compaction and segregation resistance of the high flowing concrete, material variations and conditions of fresh concrete should be satisfied with the range as follwings. 1) Concrete temperature are 10~2$0^{\circ}C$(below 3$0^{\circ}C$), 2) Surface moisture of fine aggregate is within $\pm$ 0.6%, 3) Fineness modulus of fine aggregate is 2.6$\pm$0.2, 4)Replacement ratio of blast-furnace slag is 45~50% and 5) Addition ratio of high range water reducing agent is within 1%. Based on the specification for quality control, we successfully finished concrete pouring on the under-ground slurry wall having 75,000㎥(#213,214-TK) and accumulated real date in site.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the practical application of the self consolidating concrete for the steel concrete pannel (SCP) in module LNG storage tank proposed in the previous research. We evaluated the physical properties and filling performance of developed concrete for the SCP module. First, a slump flow test was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed guidelines for the filling test. As a result, all of the concrete used showed satisfactory performance. Based on the results of the previous study, it was found that the reliability of the required time measured by the $T_{500}$ test and the rheometer results measured before and after pumping was 0.94 which means the separation and blocking should not occur. The L-box test and the U-box test were conducted before and after pumping. All of the guidelines suggested showed satisfactory performance. SCP module for LNG storage tanks was fabricated on actual size scale to evaluate the practical application at the final site. As a result, it was confirmed that satisfactory filling performance was obtained in all the specimens.

  • Recently, in many laboratories and institutes it is being studied on the high flowing concrete widely, which has high fluidity, non-segregation ability and fillingability, and sometimes being applied to the construction field actually. And the fluidity properties of high flowing concrete are influenced according to the several factors ; binder content, water/binder ratio and water content etc. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the effect of water/binder ratio and water content on the properties of high flowing concrete. For this purpose, the mix proportion of high flowing concrete according to water/binder ratio(W/B : 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45) and water content (W : 155, 165, 175, 185 kg/㎥) was selected. And then slump-flow, V-lot, L-passing test in fresh concrete, and compressive strength, freezing and thawing test in hardened concrete were peformed. According to test results, it was found that the viscosity of all those high flowing concrete with the water content 175 kg/㎥ was satisfied with 50 cm pass time of slump flow prescribed by Japanese Architectural Standard Specification (JASS 5) - from 3 to 8 seconds. And non-segregation ability of concrete with W/B 0.35 was better than the other mix proportions. Especially, the compressive strength after curing 24 hours(1 day) of all high flowing concrete was higher than that prescribed by JASS 5(50 kgf/㎠).

  • Recently, the antiwahout underwater concrete with an natiwashout admixture has been increasingly used for underwater structures. However, the credibility of antiwahout underwater concrete was brought up as problems because it was seldom applied to fields. In this study, experiments were made on the basic properties of antiwashout underwater concrete replaced with GGBF Slag from 40% to 60% to improve its properties. Resultant to the test, we got the results as follows; the difference of U-type heght was decreased, and the slump flow was increased. Whereas the amount of suspended solids became high as to increasing the replacement ratio of GGBF Slag, pH value became low. Beacause the ratio of compressive strengths (in water compared to in air) at 28days was obtained over 90%, its value is satisfied with 70% of a criterion.

  • Generally, the strength of concrete depends on factors of materials, mix proportions, compaction, manufacturing methods and curing and so on. And recently, it has increased the using of crushed sand for concrete due to the exhaustion of good natural aggregate. In case of Korea, in 2004, the using ratio of crushed sand occupies about 28% of whole fine aggregate. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the influence of W/B ratio and replacement ratio of crushed sand on the fluidity and compressive strength of high strength concrete. For this purpose, the mix proportions of concrete according to the W/B (31.5, 27.5, 23.5%) and replacement ratio of crushed sand (0, 20, 40%) was selected. And then air content, slump-flow, a-lot, compressive strength test were performed.
