  • In this study, the Dilution Method is used to measure river discharge through the hydraulic model test. the dilution method is divided into Constant-Rate-Infection Method and Slug-Injection Method in the river discharge measurement techniques. When the dilution method is applied in the hydraulic model flume, it is analyzed that the estimated error of constant-rate-injection method is less than that of the slug-in-jection method, and the result shows that floodflow analysis is more efficient than lowflow analysis as compared observed discharge with calculated discharge. The result of statistical error analysis shows that the constant-rate-injection method is appropriate technique for the measurement of the river discharge. Therefore, the dilution method among the river discharge measurement techniques can be applied for the river basin which can't be measured with current meter or unsteady-flow regime in the urban-small drainage or hydraulic structure equipment area and can be obtained more exact results than any other discharge measurement techniques.

  • Field and laboratory works were conducted to Investigate the life history, ginseng damage and chemical control effect of the field slug, Deroceras varians A. Adams. D. varians laid eggs from April to June, but a small number of eggs were also found from July to September in the field. Most young slugs grew through the slimmer months to maturity by October. overwintered beneath the moist soil surface, and began feeding and egg-laying in the following April. indicating that D varians have a life cycle in a year. Damage of ginseng plants by D. varina occurred mainly from late April to mid May in the 3rd to 5th year ginseng fields with rice-straw mulching. It seems that this damage is caused by the adults in oviposition periods and related to rice-straw mulching of ginseng fields. In the experiment, ethoprop 5% granule and metaldehyde 6% bait showed relatively high effectiveness in the control of D. varians adults. Bordeaux mixture was more effective when the chemical was sprayed after infestation of the slug than before the infestation and when the 6-12 mixture was used.

  • The technology of Semi-Solid Forging(SSF) has been actively developed to fabricate near-net shape products using light and hardly formable materials. Generally, the SSF process is composed of slug heating, forming, compression holding and ejecting step. After forming step in SSF, the slug is comperssed during a certain holding time in order to be completely filled in the die cavity and be accelerated in solidification rate. This paper presents the analysis of temperature, solid fraction and shrinkage at compression holding step for a cylindrical slug, then predicts the solidification time to obtain the final shaped part. Enthalpy-based finite element analysis is performed to solve the heat transfer problem considering phase change in solidification.

  • In this paper, the role of intermediate cover soils with respect to the leachate and gas flow is investigated from various field investigations and the hydraulic conductivity of the disposed waste is obtained using pumping and slug tests. From the results of field investigations, it was found that the flow of leachate and gas is prevented by the buried cover soils. The hydraulic conductivities of field pumping test and slug tests are well matched and stayed in the range of hydraulic conductivities of well compacted wastes in the literature.

  • GSH-dependent glutaredoxinl (Grxl) was characterized in Dictyostelium discoideum. After starvation, the mRNA levels of grx1 gene increased during aggregation, thereafter decreased up to tip formation and increased again during culmination. To investigate the function of Grxl, the protein was overexpressed in D. discoideum using actinl5 promoter, The phenotype analysis on Grxl-overexpressed cells showed the maintenance of slug stage for a long period and delayed culmination under dark condition. To corroborate these phenotype by the enzyme, the two mutant forms of Grxl (C21S and C24S) were overexpressed in D. discoideum. The phenotype of two mutant cells represented no slug formation and the early culmination on dark condition. These results indicate that Grxl might regulate the transition from slug to culminant in darkness.

  • Experimental mass transfer data, which were obtained for the $CO_2$-water slug flows in vertical tubes with 2, 5, and 8mm diameters, were analyzed in comparison with the penetration theory. It was found that a penetration model with molecular diffusion coefficient cannot predict the experimental data accurately. An effective diffusion coefficient, which considers enhancement effect of interfacial waves, was suggested to improve prediction. Another empirical factor was also suggested to consider the effect of non-uniform interface velocity. A modified penetration model was found to be capable of predicting the experimental data reasonably well.

  • On August 21, 2023, the National Institute of Ecology reported the sighting of an invasive slug resembling Limax maximus Linnaeus, 1758. near Bambat Tree Frog Park, Suwon-si, Korea. This slug is known for its aggressiveness. Specimens were collected around the park and from nearby farms. Through barcoding analysis and sequence comparison, it was identified as L. maximus, confirming its presence in Republic of Korea, alongside two previously identified Limax species, Limax flavus Linnaeus, 1758 and Lehmannia marginatus O. F. Müller, 1774. This study represents the first documented report of L. maximus in the country.

  • No analytical solution exists for evaluating in-situ hydraulic conductivity of vertical cutoff walls by analyzing slug test results. Recently, an analytical solution to interpret slug tests has been proposed for a partially penetrated well in an aquifer. However, this analytical solution cannot be directly applied to the cutoff wall because the solution has been developed exclusively for an infinite aquifer instead of a narrow cutoff wall. To consider the cutoff wall boundary conditions, the analytical solution has been modified in this study to take into account the narrow boundaries by introducing the imaginary well theory. Two boundary conditions are considered according to the existence of filter cakes: constant head boundary and no flux boundary. Generalized steady-state shape factors are presented for each geometric condition, which can be used for evaluating the in-situ hydraulic conductivity of cutoff walls. The constant head boundary condition provides higher shape factors and no flux boundary condition provides lower shape factors than the infinite aquifer, which enables to adjust the in-situ hydraulic conductivity of the cutoff wall. The hydraulic conductivities calculated from the analytical solution in this paper give about 1.2~1.7 times higher than those from the Bouwer and Rice method, one of the semi-empirical formulas. Considering the compressibility of the backfill material, the analytical solution developed in this study was proved to correspond to the case of incompressible backfill materials.

  • In the present experimental study, the effect of gas- and liquid-injected methods on the formation of bubble and liquid slug at the merging micro T-junction of a square microchannel with dimensions $600{\mu}m{\times}600{\mu}m$ was investigated. Nitrogen and water were used as test fluids. The superficial velocities of the liquid and gas were in the range of 0.05 - 1 m/s, and 0.1 - 1 m/s, respectively, where the Taylor flow was observed. The bubble length, liquid slug length, bubble velocity, and bubble generation frequency were measured by analyzing the images captured using a high-speed camera. Under similar inlet superficial velocity conditions, in the case of gas injection to the main channel at the merging T-junction (T_gas-liquid), the lengths of the bubble and liquid slug were longer, and the bubble generation frequency was lower than in the case of liquid injection to the main channel at the merging T-junction (T_liquid-gas). On the other hand, in both cases, the bubble velocity was almost the same. The previous correlation proposed using experimental data for T_liquid-gas had predicted the present experimental data of bubble length, bubble velocity, liquid slug length, and bubble generation frequency for T_gas-liquid to be ~24%, ~9%, ~39%, ~55%, respectively.
