  • Pneumatic exciters can be good replacements of electrodynamic, piezoelectric and hydraulic exciters owing to simple structure and large exciting force. One problem to be solved is a slow response caused by compressibility of air. Desirable frequency response characteristics of exciter are constant magnitude and zero degree phase, because users want no time delay between input signal and output force. For this reason, frequency range of pneumatic exciters is limited about 0~1 Hz. Therefore, expansion of frequency range is an important issue when designing the pneumatic exciter. In this paper, the pneumatic exciter which has same structure with active pneumatic isolator is dealt with. The dynamic characteristics are presented, and its limitation of expanding frequency range is shown based on analytical studies. Then the pneumatic exciter with dual-chamber is suggested to overcome this problem. Based on simulation study, a design method is presented.

  • Due to the recent public awareness of global warming and sustainable economic growth, there has been a growing interest in alternative clean energy sources. Hydrogen is considered as a clean fuel for the next generation. One of the technical challenges related to the use of hydrogen is safe monitoring of the hydrogen leak during separation, purification and transportation. For detecting various gases, chemiresistor-type gas sensors have been widely studied and used due to their well-established detection scheme and low cost. However, it is known that many of them have the limited sensitivity and slow response time, when used at low temperature conditions. In our work, a sensor based on Schottky barriers at the electrode/sensing material interface showed promising results that can be utilized for developing fast and highly sensitive gas sensors. Our hydrogen sensor was designed and fabricated based on indium oxide (In2O3)-doped tin oxide (SnO2) semiconductor nanoparticles with platinum (Pt) nanoclusters in combination with interdigitated electrodes. The sensor showed the sensitivity as high as $10^7%$ (Rair/Rgas) and the detection limit as low as 30 ppm. The sensor characteristics could be obtained via optimized materials synthesis route and sensor electrode design. Not only the contribution of electrical resistance from the film itself but also the interfacial effect was identified as an important factor that contribute significantly to the overall sensor characteristics. This promises the applicability of the developed sensor for monitoring hydrogen leak at room temperature.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for the closed-loop $H_{\infty}$ composite control of singularly perturbed nonlinear systems with a exogenous disturbance, using the successive Galerkin approximation(SGA). The singularly perturbed nonlinear system is decomposed into two subsystems of a slow-time scale and a fast-time scale via singular perturbation theory, and two $H_{\infty}$ control laws are obtained to each subsystem by using the SGA method. The composite control law that consists of two $H_{\infty}$ control laws of each subsystem is designed. One of the purposes of this paper is to design the closed-loop $H_{\infty}$ composite control law for the singularly perturbed nonlinear systems via the SGA method. The other is to reduce the computational complexity when the SGA method is applied to the high order systems.

  • Semi-active laser missile systems with high accuracy are necessary to asymmetric threats, such as UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). They are usually used to attack stationary or slow moving targets, therefore we should study on the laser designator which can detect and track fast moving targets in order to deal with UAV. In this study, design specifications are came up through performance analysis of existing laser designators, and laser designation method for fast moving target is developed. The detection and tracking performance of developed laser designator are verified through inside/outside tests on ground/aerial stationary/moving targets. Through this study, we obtain laser designator techniques that could be applied to actual semi-active laser missile systems.

  • Gasification of biomass produces syngas containing CO, $H_2$ and/or $CH_4$, which can then be converted into energy or value-added fuels. One of key issues for efficient gasification is to minimize tar concentration in the syngas for use in a final conversion device such as gas engine. This study investigated the decomposition of primary tar by catalytic cracking using char as catalyst, of which the feature can be integrated into a fixed bed gasifier design. The pyrolysis vapor containing tar from pyrolysis of wood at $500^{\circ}C$ was passed through a reactor filled with or without char at $800^{\circ}C$ for a residence time of 1, 3 or 5 sec. Then, the condensable vapor (water and tar) and gases were analyzed for the yields and elemental composition. Four types of char particles with different microscopic surface area and pore size distribution: wood, paddy straw, palm kernel shell and activated carbon. The results were analyzed for the mass and carbon yields of tar and the composition of product gases to conclude the effects of char types and residence time.

  • The objective of this research is to evaluate the pedestrian signal time involving green and flashing green times. The minimum pedestrian green indication should give time for pedestrian to start crossing safely, and the flashing green indication should give time to complete the crossing. An average pedestrian crossing speed of 1.1(m/s) was estimated by analyzing the field data which was slower than the 1.2(m/s) currently used. Furthermore, the study proposed that design speed for the flashing green time should be slow speed for considerations pedestrian safety, not the average speed. The 0.78-1.01(m/s) of pedestrian speed was estimated at the elementary school areas that indicated 0.2(m/s) slower than the other areas. The pedestrian starting time (perception/reaction time) and time headway from front to back of herd was estimated to determine minimum pedestrian green time. the pedestrian starting time was estimated to determine minimum pedestrian green time. The pedestrian starting time was ranged 2.52-4.29 seconds. The time interval between the pedestrian rows was found to be 1.25-1.86 seconds, which declines as the pedestrian rows increases, The equation to calculate the pedestrian signal, which declines as the pedestrian rows increases. The equation to calculate the pedestrian signal time is proposed using the pedestrian starting time, the time interval between the pedestrian rows, and pedestrian crossing speed given area types (commercial, business, mixed, and elementary school areas), number of both-directional pedestrians for a cycle, crosswalk length and width.

  • Purpose: Chatbots are widely diffusing across various industries to substitute human manpower in the industry. However as researchers only develop technology that is applied to chatbot, the diffusion is slow in progress. The purpose of this study is to propose useful implications to accelerate diffusion of chatbots across industries by analyzing the perception of customers. To achieve the research purpose this study analyzes causal effect relationship between characteristics of chatbot character, service quality, individual difference, and intention to use chatbot. Methods: This study developed a survey that contains various questionnaires for each construct based on literature review. Data collected through survey was tested for convergent validity and discriminant validity and further analyzed the relationship using PLS-SEM method to verify hypotheses. Results: Trustworthiness of the chatbot character, ease of use, application design, responsiveness, customization, assurance, inertia, and previous experience have significant influence on forming user satisfaction, consumer trust, and intention to use. The others, likability, appropriateness, technology anxiety, and need for interaction were not significant in this research. Conclusion: Although the constructs of the research model was significant in previous literatures, some do not have significant effect on intention to use chatbots. Based on the results, chatbot managers will be able to develop chatbot systems which are more appealing to users and more academic researchers will focus on analyzing user perception and intention.

  • Recently, the vibration of underground structure due to high speed railway loads has been increased substantially as compared with middle and slow speed. The buried gas pipelines under continuous impact forces and repeated loading are more influenced by the vibrational loads than another pipelines. However, the static analysis was not enough to allow for the effect of vibrations because it uses impact factors for the design or analysis process. In this study, characteristics of Pipelines was quantitatively estimated through each conditions of soil covers and train speed, and the new vibration prediction is presented about the vibrational velocity.
