  • The information for operating the train should be transmitted to train, with extreme security. In our system, The information, such that the allowable velocity of the train, train existence in current area, and other data necessary for operating train, is transmitted in the form of FM signal. Received by the receiver located on train, the signal is filtered, demodulated, and analyzed for extracting the original information. The analysis of the demodulated signal is done through FFT algorithm using sliding slot. The simulation results shows the validity of the algorithm.

  • When triple flames propagated in a diverging channel, the effects of fuel dilution on the lift-off characteristics of triple flames were investigated. A multi-slot burner was used to stabilize the lift-off flame especially at weak fuel concentration gradients. It was reported that there is a maximum propagation velocity at a critical concentration gradient in an open jet regardless of fuel dilution. The enhancement of a diffusion flame affected to increase the propagation velocity around critical concentration gradients. However, the influence of a confined channel on the structure of triple flames according to fuel dilution needs to be investigated compared with an open jet case. This study aimed to examine the effect of a confined channel on the structure and the propagation velocity of the triple flames according to fuel dilution. Lift-off height and propagation velocity of triple flames were investigated by employing three kinds of fuel compositions diluted by nitrogen (0%, 25%, 50% $N_2$), Fuel dilution reduced the propagation velocity of triple flame in a confined channel mainly due to the decrease of flame temperature in premixed branch. Despite the difference in fuel dilution, the propagation velocity has a maximum value at a specific fuel concentration gradient even though the critical concentration gradient increases with fuel dilution. And the critical concentration gradient in a confined channel is larger than that in an open jet due to enhancement of convective diffusion.

  • The turbulent structures of the free plane jet and two dimensional impinging jet are investigated experimentally. In order to get the two dimensional jet, the contour of the cubic equation suggested by Morel is used for a contracting nozzle. A linearized constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer is used for measurement. Mean velocities and turbulent intensities are measured along the centerline of the jet. Jet halp width spatial double velocity correlation coefficients and integral length scales are obtained. It is established that the free plane jet is truly self-preserving about 40 slot widths downstream of the nozzle. The experiments for the impinging jet are carried out at four different impingement wall locations within the self-preserving region of the free plane jet, and comparing the results with that of free plane jet, the mean velocity is changed in the region of 0.25H and turbulent intensities are affected in the region of 0.2H from the wall, respectively, where H means the distance between the nozzle exit and the wall.

  • A flow visualization near submerged nozzle of solid rocket motor was conducted by experiments. A numerical simulation was also performed to reveal detailed phenomena. Radial cold flow simulating hot gas was introduced by a porous grain model which was manufactured by perforated steel plates. The grain model was mounted in high-pressure chamber which has quartz glass at the top of the grain model. From the high-speed images, a rotating vortex was observed and the two type of counter-rotating momentums were generated in numerical results. The rotating momentum was generated at the fin-slot grain because of unbalance between high-velocity flow from slots and low-velocity flow from fin-bases. As a result, roll torques can be produced by the rotating vortex tube.

  • In this study, the effect of hole geometry of the cooling system on the flow and temperature field was numerically calculated. The finite volume method was employed to discretize the governing equation based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. The standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used and also the predicted results were compared with the experimental data to validate numerical modeling. The predicted results showed good agreement in all cases. To analyze the effect of the discharge coefficient for slots of different length to width, the inlet chamfering and radiusing holes were considered. The discharge coefficient was increased with increment of the chamfering ratio, radiusing ratio and slot length to width and also the effect of radiusing showed better result than chamfering in all cases. In order to analyze the difference between the predicted results with plenum region and without plenum region, the velocity profiles of jet exit region for a various flow conditions were calculated. The normal velocity components of jet exit showed big difference for the low slot length to width and high blowing rate cases. To analyze the flow phenomena injected from a row of inclined holes in a real turbine blade, three dimensional flow and temperature distribution of the region including plenum, hole and cross stream with flow conditions were numerically calculated. The results have shown three-dimensional flow characteristics, such as the development of counter rotating vortices, jetting effect and low momentum region within the hole in addition to counter rotating vortex structure in the cross stream.

  • An experimental investigation on heat transfer characteristics of two-dimensional heated blocks using a confined impinging slot jet has been performed. The effect of jet Reynolds number(Re=3900, 5800, 9700), streamwise block spacing(p/w=0.5, 1, 1.5) and dimensionless nozzle to block distance(H/B=1, 2, 4, 6) have been examined with five isothermally heated blocks. With the measurement of jet mean velocity and turbulence intensity distributions at nozzle exit, initially turbulent regimes, are classified. To clarify local heat transfer characteristics, naphthalene sublimation technique as used. The maximum Nusselt number at the stagnation point for the jet Reynolds number is occurred at H/B=4. Besides, the local and a average heat transfer of heated blocks increase with decreasing streamwise block spacing and increasing jet Reynolds number.

  • A seedling pick-up device for vegetable transplanters was developed and its work performance was evaluated at the laboratory. The pick-up device extracts seedlings from a 200-cell tray of seedlings and transfers them to the place where they are to be transplanted into the soil. The device consists of a path generator, pick-up pins and a pin driver. The path generator is a five-bar mechanism comprised of a fixed link, a driving link, a driven link, a connecting link and a slider. The slider is constrained to move along the driven link and a fixed slot of combined straight-line and circular paths. The connecting link joins the driving link and the slider. When the slider moves along the straight-line path of the slot it takes seedlings out from the cell and transfers them to the transplanting hopper when moving along the circular path. A proto-type of the pick-up device was built and tested under the various operational conditions such as age of seedling, approach direction and penetration depth of pins to the cell, holding method of seedling and extracting velocity. The device extracted 30 seedlings per minute with the maximum success ratio of 97% using the seedlings of 23 days old. Some design details were also discussed and suggested to enhance the performance of the device.

  • A push pull hood system is frequently applied to control contaminants evaporated from an open surface tank. Efficiency of push pull hood system is affected by various parameters, such as, cross draft, vessel shapes, tank surface area, liquid temperature. A previous work assisted by flow visualization technique qualitatively showed that a strong cross draft blown from the pull hood to push slot could destroy a stable wall-jet on the surface of tank, resulting in the abrupt escape of smoke from the surface. In this study, the tracer gas method was applied to determine the effect of cross-draft on the capture efficiency qualitatively. A new concept of capture efficiency was introduced, that is, linear efficiency. This can be determined by measuring the mass of tracer gas in the duct of pull hood while the linear tracer source is in between push slot and pull hood. By traversing the linear tracer source from the push slot to the pull hood, it can be found where the contaminant is escaped from the tank. Total capture efficiency can be determined by averaging the linear efficiencies. Under the condition of cross-draft velocities of 0, 0.4, 0.75, 1.05 and 1.47m/s, total capture efficiencies were measured as 97.6, 95.4, 94.6, 92.7 and 70.5% respectively. The abrupt reduction of efficiency with cross-draft velocity of 1.47m/s was due to the destruction of tank surface wall-jet by the counter-current cross-draft. The same phenomenon was observed in the previous flow visualization study. As an alternative to overcome this abrupt efficiency drop, the 20% increase of hood flow rates was tested, resulting in 20% efficiency increase.

  • Discharge measurement during flood season is very difficult. Microwave water surface current meter (MWSCM) can measures river surface velocities easily without contacting water. This study introduces its improved version, MWSCM for general use. The existing version of MWSCM is for floods so that its applicable period in a year is short. It has been improved to extend its applicability in a year. The range of measurable velocity for MWSCM for general use is extended so it can be applied during normal flows as well as high flows. MWSCM for general use can measure the velocity range of $0.03{\sim}20.0ms^{-1}$, whereas MWSCM for floods can measure the velocity range of $0.5{\sim}10.0ms^{-1}$. To make such innovation of MWSCM for general use, the applied microwave frequency of MWSCM was changed from 10 GHz to 24 GHz. Waveguide slot array antenna has been designed with the new development of the circuit of transmitting and receiving part. Improvement requests on the existing MWSCM for floods - weight lightening, measured velocity stabilization, self-test, low power consumption, and waterproof and dampproof - from the users of it have been reflected for the development of the new version of MWSCM.

  • As a process of plat panel display production, slot coating is widely used for the coating of photoresist on a wide glass substrate. A uniform coating thickness is important, and the coating uniformity is divided into nozzle and machine directions. The machine and nozzle directions coating uniformities are influenced by the operation condition of coater and flow uniformity inside the die, respectively. Non-uniform coating during steady coating process occurs according to those factors, however, non-uniform coating along the machine and nozzle directions has been observed at the beginning of coating by unsteady flow. In this study, steady and unsteady state flow simulations have been performed and compared with experiment to examine the causes of non-uniform coating. Computational results exhibited that it took a time to get a uniform pressure distribution at whole inside the die, and during this period of time edge regions showed lower exit velocity compared with center region. Subsequently edge regions had thinner coated layers than center region. However edge regions showed higher exit velocity than center region after steady state, and this made edge regions had thicker coated layer than center region.
