Small- and large-scale analysis of bearing capacity and load-settlement behavior of rock-soil slopes reinforced with geogrid-box method

  • This paper presents an investigation on bearing capacity, load-settlement behavior and safety factor of rock-soil slopes reinforced using geogrid-box method (GBM). To this end, small-scale laboratory studies were carried out to study the load-settlement response of a circular footing resting on unreinforced and reinforced rock-soil slopes. Several parameters including unit weight of rock-soil materials (loose- and dense-packing modes), slope height, location of footing relative to the slope crest, and geogrid tensile strength were studied. A series of finite element analysis were conducted using ABAQUS software to predict the bearing capacity behavior of slopes. Limit equilibrium and finite element analysis were also performed using commercially available software SLIDE and ABAQUS, respectively to calculate the safety factor. It was found that stabilization of rock-soil slopes using GBM significantly improves the bearing capacity and settlement behavior of slopes. It was established that, the displacement contours in the dense-packing mode distribute in a broader and deeper area as compared with the loose-packing mode, which results in higher ultimate bearing load. Moreover, it was found that in the loose-packing mode an increase in the vertical pressure load is accompanied with an increase in the soil settlement, while in the dense-packing mode the load-settlement curves show a pronounced peak. Comparison of bearing capacity ratios for the dense- and loose-packing modes demonstrated that the maximum benefit of GBM is achieved for rock-soil slopes in loose-packing mode. It was also found that by increasing the slope height, both the initial stiffness and the bearing load decreases. The results indicated a significant increase in the ultimate bearing load as the distance of the footing to the slope crest increases. For all the cases, a good agreement between the laboratory and numerical results was observed.

감천예천구간 국도비탈면 종자뿜어붙이기 시험시공 적용사례 (Application Cases of Test Construction of Hydro-Seeding Measures on the Slopes Along the National Road Between Gamchon and Yaechon)

  • To protect the surface of ground-cutting slopes and ground-raised slopes and to recover environment-friendly slopes at the national road expansion construction between Gamchon and Yaechon, test-construction work was done using several modes of hydro-seeding measures to select a suitable construction method through the field survey; the results were as follows : As a result of survey on physio-chemical characteristics of soil, the average soil inclination on ground-raised slopes was from 4.73 mm to 5.37 mm; the average soil acidity was from pH 6.47 to 6.73; the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.57~1.70 %,; the average soil inclination on ground-cutting slopes was 9.17~10.43mm; the average soil acidity was pH 6.67~6.77 and the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.53~1.27 %; considered overall, they showed generally satisfactory base materials for plant breeding. As a result of the number of sprouting individuals, the average sprouting number of individuals on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction methods and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spots executed by furrow-digging with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were 1,172 number of per square meter and 970 number of per square meter respectively; thus they showed higher numerical value comparing with other test spots. Likewise, the average number of sprouting individuals on test spots of the ground-cutting slopes executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spot executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were found to be 1,107 number of per square meter and 1,105 number of per square meter respectively, whose numerical value showed rather higher other test spots. As a result of a survey on living plants' breeding index [dried weight], the weight in dried state on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures on both ground-raised and ground-cutting slopes was found to be higher and showed similar characteristics statistically. As a result of survey on the surface-covering degree of ground-raised slopes, nine weeks after test construction, test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures showed commonly more than 70% of surface-covering degree, but other test spots showed only below 35% of surface covering degree; especially in case of test spots by Verdvol seed spray measures, they showed 10% of the lowest surface-covering. Surface-covering degree on the test spot of ground-cutting slopes nine weeks after test construction showed more than 75% both executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures. As a result of survey on appearing plants on the test spots, there dominates Eragrostis curvula both on ground-raised slopes and on ground-cutting slopes with other seeding plant life's lower breeding and there appear intruders, such as Setaria viridis Beauv, Digitaria sanguinalis Scop, and Chenopodium album var.centrorubrum Makino. As for water-borne excavation and soil's washing-away on the slopes, there happened less washing-away and water-borne excavation with good breeding of plant life on test spots executed both by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures, but there happened much more soil's washing-away along with water-home excavation at the test spot executed by Seed spray with measures. After the research results of test construction sites are examined overall, it's presumed that furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures [interval between lines is 40cm, 5cm in depth] will be preferred to prevent erosion and water-home excavation of slopes located within the construction sites.

충북 보은군 피반령 부근 절취사면의 파괴양상에 대한 통계학적 연구 (Statistical Study of Failure-Modes around the Pibanryeong Region, Boeun-Gun, Chungbuk)

  • 충북 청원군과 보은군에 북서-남동 방향으로 관통하는 국도 25번 도로를 따라 약 5.7 km에 걸친 절취 사면의 안정성에 대한 통계학적 분석을 수행하였다. 이 구간은 전 사면에 걸쳐 직접적인 보강 방법과 간접적인 보호 대책을 사용하여 사면의 안정화 대책이 수립되었다. 총 30개소의 사면에서 사면의 방향성, 엽리와 층리, 벽개 및 절리구조의 방향성을 측정하였다. 스테레오 투영을 이용하여 분석한 결과 사면의 주방향성(경사/경사방향)은 1) $58^{\circ}/095^{\circ}$, 2) $60^{\circ}/296^{\circ}$ 및 3) $59^{\circ}/212^{\circ}$으로 3방향성이 우세하게 나타났다. 보강과 보호 대책이 수행된 사면의 빈도수와 사면의 경사방향의 분석에서 사면은 경사방향 $80-120^{\circ}$$280-320^{\circ}$의 방향성으로 주로 분포하며 사면의 경사방향 $0-80^{\circ}$(북쪽과 북동 방향)와 $120-160^{\circ}$(남동방향)의 사면은 연구지역에서 나타나지 않는다. 분석된 사면의 3가지 주방향성에 대하여 각각 사면의 파괴 양상을 분석하였으며 절리구조, 엽리와 층리 및 벽개구조의 교차나 교차 조합에 기인하여 여러 유형의 파괴가 발생할 수 있는 사면으로 분석되었다. 하지만 주방향성 3의 사면은 모든 파괴 양상이 발생할 수 있으나 통계상 빈도수에서 가장 적으며 지형상 소규모의 사면으로 형성되어 확률상 사면의 파괴가 발생할 가능성은 적은 것으로 분석되었다.

고속도로 비탈면 경관선호도에 대한 연구 (The Study on the Landscape View Preferences on Slopes of Expressway)

  • 고속도로 절개 비탈면의 경관에 대한 선호도 분석을 위하여 2013년 3월부터 5월까지 서세종 IC와 신양 IC의 경관개선 디자인에 대한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 고속도로를 이용하고 있는 횟수로는 1년에 5회 이내가 37%로 가장 높게 나타났으며, 고속도로 주행시 응답자의 89%가 비탈면을 자주 보며, 비탈면이 식생으로 녹화되거나 꽃이 피어 있을 때가 인상적이라고 응답하였다. 고속도로 주행시 각종 로고를 설치한 비탈면을 보았을 때 비교적 부정적인 인상(61%)이 잘 했다는 인상(40%)보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 고속도로 비탈면에 경관 개선을 위해 각종 로고 등을 설치할 때는 자연친화적인 방법을 이용하거나(57%), 일반적인 녹화방법을 이용하거나(19%), 콘크리트구조물 등 비자연성을 나타내는 구조물을 전면 녹화하거나(12%), 경관개선을 해야 한다(11%)고 응답하였다. 서세종 IC의 비탈면에 녹화로고를 설치하기 전과 후의 사진을 비교하였을 때 경관선호도는 좋음(43%)과 매우 좋음(16%)이 59%를 차지하여 나쁨(9%)보다는 녹화로고에 대하여 좋게 인식하는 것으로 분석되었다. 고속도로 비탈면의 콘크리트 계단식 옹벽에 그림이나 각종 로고를 설치하는 것에 대해 응답자 중 65%는 찬성하였다. 고속도로 이용자는 비탈면에 자연친화적인 방법 및 녹화 등 경관개선을 위해 콘크리트 등의 비자연성을 제거하는 방법을 선호하고 있으며, 콘크리트 계단식 옹벽 등은 경관개선을 위하여 녹화하거나 그림 등을 그려서 경관을 변화시키는 노력이 필요하다고 판단된다.

여자 대학생의 어깨길이와 어깨경사각의 측정 (Measurement of Shoulder Length and Slope of Women's University Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain the basic data for sound wear design. The objects' of this study were 331 women's university students. The eight items were the shoulder length, shoulder slope, height, weight, chest girth, neck girth, back length, and back shoulder width. The shoulder length and slopes were measured, compared with the right, the left, and other items. The results were as follows; The difference between the right and left shoulder length did not nearly appear. The mean of the right shoulder slopes was $21.3^{\circ}$, and that of the left was $21.9^{\circ}$. According to increase of the age, the right and left shoulder slope tends to be higher. The maximum distribution was $20.7^{\circ}$. According to increase of the age, the maximum distribution tends to be higher. The left compared with the right shoulder length, the right shoulder length of 90.3% objects' was longer than that of the left. The right and left shoulder length of 4.2% objects' were same. The left shoulder length of 5.4% objects' was longer than that of the right. The left compared with the right shoulder slopes, the right shoulder slopes of 12.7% objects' were higher than those of the left. The both size of 20.5% objects' were equal. The left slopes of 66.8% objects' was higher than those of the right.

성토사면유지관리시스템 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on Embankment Slope Management System)

  • Embankment Slope (or Fill Slope) is defined as artificial slope formed by the filling of soil or rocks on the original ground. Recently a lot of embankment failures and collapse has occurred due to the increase of torrential rainfall and typhoons. Embankment collapse has lead to a great loss of lives and property therefore there is a need to establish a systematic embankment slope management system that will handle the maintenance and repair of risky embankment slopes. The objective of this study is to establish an "Embankment Slope Management Method" for embankment slopes located along national highways all over Korea. The method for field investigation of embankment slopes was recommended and the system for investment priority determination was also developed. The factors that lead to the collapse of embankment slopes caused by natural calamities were also determined through the initial survey of embankment slopes located along river fronts and mountainous areas.

Factor of safety in limit analysis of slopes

  • The factor of safety is the most common measure of the safety margin for slopes. When the traditionally defined factor is used in kinematic approach of limit analysis, calculations can become elaborate, and iterative methods have to be used. To avoid this inconvenience, the safety factor was defined in terms of the work rates that are part of the work balance equation used in limit analysis. It was demonstrated for two simple slopes that the safety factors calculated according to the new definition fall close to those calculated using the traditional definition. Statistical analysis was carried out to find out whether, given normal distribution of the strength parameters, the distribution of the safety factor can be approximated with a well-defined probability density function. Knowing this function would make it convenient to calculate the probability of failure. The results indicated that the normal distribution could be used for low internal friction angle (up to about $16^{\circ}$) and the Johnson distribution could be used for larger angles ${\phi}$. The data limited to two simple slopes, however, does not allow assuming these distributions a priori for other slopes.

  • 최근의 엘리뇨와 라니냐 등 이상기온현상과 이에 따른 산불발생빈도의 증가는 산지사면의 안정성에 대한 산불의 영향을 고려해보게 되는 계기가 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 산불로 인한 식생의 파괴에 따른 자연사면 안정성에 미치는 정도를 규명하고, 산불에 따른 사면의 안정성을 평가하는 방법을 제시하여 산불로 인하여 발생될 수 있는 피해를 최소화하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 논문에서는 산불로 인한 산지사면 식생의 변화가 사면 안정성에 미치는 영향을 정량적으로 분석하였고, 그 결과로 산불의 영향을 고려한 사면안정도표를 제안하였다.

설악산 양사면 하천에서의 고도차에 따른 저서성 대형무척추동물 군집의 공간 분포 (Spatial Distribution of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community by Altitude in Streams Located in Both Facing Slopes of the Mt. Seorak, Korea)

  • There are marked differences in climate condition between east-facing slopes and west-facing slopes in Mt. Seorak (1,708 m). This study was conducted to find out the differences of benthic macroinvertebrate communities between both slopes of Mt. Seorak. Quantitative (Surber net; $30cm{\times}30cm$, mesh: 1mm) and qualitative (Hand net; mesh: 1mm) samplings ware carried out seasonally in each site which had 100-meter-high difference from November 2010 to November 2011. Most of the survey sites showed sound environmental conditions because they were located in the protection area of the national park. The benthic macroinvertebrates collected from all survey sites were composed of 158 species, 62 families, 17 orders, 7 classes and 5 phyla. DCA (Detrended Correspondence Analysis) ordination based on the abundance of benthic mactoinvertebrates showed that altitude was a major factor governing the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate community. There was no significant difference of the communities between both slopes.

대규모 절토사면의 효율적인 유지관리를 위한 연구 (A Study about efficient maintenance of large scale cut slope)

  • 절토사면 중 단일사면이 연장 200m, 높이 50m 이상일 경우 시설물 안전에 관한 특별법에 의거 2종 시설물로 지정되며 근래에 들어 광폭도로의 신설이 증가되어 2종 시설물에 속하는 절토사면의 개소수 또한 증가되는 상황이다. 대규모 절토사면의 경우 시공부터 유지관리까지 소규모에 비해 비교적 잘 이루어지는 상황이며, 보수 보강 공법 또한 잘 적용되어져 있다. 하지만 절취 면적이 넓고 대부분 식생 및 표면보호 등으로 인해 사면 내 육안조사가 용이하지 않다. 본 연구에서는 대규모 절토사면의 상태평가시 효율적인 평가 방안 및 평가결과에 따른 유지관리 방안을 논의하고자 한다.
