The purpose of this study was to figure out the suitable field standards for revegetation measures on cut-slopes in consideration of the environmental factors. The field survey was conducted from 1995 to 1996 on highway cut-slopes. The results obtained could be summarized as follows; The major revegetation measures surveyed were 5 major measures as a whole in descending order of seed-spraying measures, block-sod pitching measures, latticed block pitching measures, hydro-seeding measures with seed-fertilizer-soil materials, and several netting measures on highway cut-slopes. According to the analysis of the environmental factors, the plant coverage was affected several major environmental factors which were soil factors(soil hardness, soil texture, soil and rock condition), and site factors(slope gradient, slope length). From a viewpoint of optimum selection, the major 3 factors(soil factors, slope gradient factors, slope length factors) should be considered for selection of revegetation measures on highway cut-slopes.

This study was conducted to find out the growth characteristic of mixed-seeding in the grasses for slope revegetation measures. Seeding treatment with six combination types of five grasses used for this experiment such as orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata 'Potomac'), perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne 'Manhattan'), tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea 'Jaguar'), kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis 'Majestic') and weeping lovegrass(Eragrostis curvula). The growth of orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue were good on mixed-seeding condition in case of number of individuals, heights and coverages at this experiment. These plants will useful for revegetation measures mixed-seeding, but weeping love grass and kentucky bluegrass did not show a desirable growth in mixed-seeding condition, and these plant prefered mixed seeding to single seeding. Regeneration percents of orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue were higher than that of weeping love grass and kentucky bluegrass, and coverage kept on good condition through one year after seeding, therefore, these plants will effective for initial stage revegetation measures.

The main objectives of this comparative study were 1) to quantify the potential contribution of wood chips to revegetation on the cut slope in a constructed area, 2) to compare the floristic similarity of species composition whether existing of wood chips in the soil media or not. Wood chips were combined with soil media in the ratio of 30%. The thin layer (1 cm, 3 cm) soil media revegetation methods and the thick layer (10 cm) soil media revegetation method were constructed on the cut slopes by machineries respectively. Also, comparative experiments the existence of wood chips in the soil media were conducted to evaluate the effects of wood chips on revegetation works. The total size of quadrat was $300m^2$ ($100m^2{\times}3$). The results of monitoring for 3 years on cut slopes were as follows: 1) All the quadrat existed in the proper range for vegetation. 2) Species richness of quadrat including wood chips was 10% more than those of commercial soil medias. 3) The coverage rates of quadrat including wood chips were similar or superior to those of conventional methods. It can be concluded that the use of wood chips would be effective to promote establishment of diverse landscape and vegetation. However, it behooves to continue monitoring on succession of vegetation for ecological restoration. Finally, adequate wood chips deposit and gathering methods should be studied properly.

In recent Japan, the demand for woodland creation on revegetation sites is increasing. In the forests and woodlands, we can find many functions of environmental conservation, in addition of biomaterial production, and all of these existences with such functions are defined as environmental woodlands. Many woodlands has been created from old times for the purpose of forest conservation and flood control, and most of these technology are handed down to present time. After Edo era (from the beginning of Meiji era, 1867), some valuable examples of woodlands were created, like Meiji shrine woodland in Tokyo. After the World War II, a lot of technology for woodland revegetation, such as ecological tree planting, have been developed. At present, many revegetation sites are aiming at woodland creation, like on man-made slope, etc.. In the great change of social structure, revegetation technology is also required to keep in close relationships to the restoration of devastated existing forests and woodlands, and to provide many technology for the restoration of secondary woodland, preservation of soil, mitigation, reclamation, etc.. Now in Japan, the improvement of environment including all the member of biosphere is demanded on a large scale. Therefore, revegetation technology should also try to make an activity taking a broad view of the restoration of natural vegetation in addition to the traditional and new woodland creation.

This research was initiated to investigate the revegetation characteristics under the seeding amount treatments of cool-season turfgrasses on the disturbed slope. 4 different seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses (0.0 $g/m^2$, 1.5 $g/m^2$, 3.0 $g/m^2$, 6.0 $g/m^2$) with the same seeding amounts of native woody (Rhus chinensis, Albizzia julibrissin) and herbaceous plants (Lotus corniculatus var. japonicus, Dianthus sinensis, Aster yomena) were treated with 3 replications on the experimental disturbed slope. Data such as soil hardness (mm), moisture content (%), surface coverage rate (%), the number of each germinating plant and plant height were analyzed. There were no statistic differences observed in the soil hardness and the soil moisture content while a significant difference was observed in the surface coverage rates. The surface coverage rates were higher in 3.0 $g/m^2$ and 6.0 $g/m^2$ plots compared to the rest two plots of cool-season turfgrasses. However, the emergence of native woody and herbaceous plants was relatively low in 3.0 $g/m^2$ and 6.0 $g/m^2$ plots of high seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses. This result indicated that high seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses could decrease the emergence of native woody and herbaceous plants. We concluded that 1.5 g~3.0 $g/m^2$ seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses was optimum level for the balanced emergence of cool-season turfgrasses, native woody and herbaceous plants in the viewpoint of the ecological disturbed slope revegetation.

This study was conducted on the field application for a method which is currently used. Although the method was performed with experimental knowledge, this study attempted to approach scientific ways through thirty sets of test-bed and three times monitoring limited by control variations for three months. The factors on previous studies are slope location, slope degree, type (roadfill vs. roadcut), aspect, vegetation cover, species, thickness, vertical length, horizontal length, soil type, elevation, erosion, soil-moisture, soil-hardness, pH, and so on. However, the factors of a suitable and significant level are slope degree, type, aspect, thickness, soil-moisture, vertical length and horizontal length in slope revegetation. the results were as follows : As a result of survey on soil types based on the status before construction, the rate of vegetation cover with non-mesh construction in soil areas was better than the rate of vegetation cover with fiber meshes and wire meshes. The rate of vegetation cover with fiber meshes in weathered rocks was better than using wire meshes. The rate of vegetation cover with the wire meshes in blasted rocks was better than using fiber meshes. Also, the factors affecting the rate of vegetation cover presented the number of appearance species, soil-moisture, thickness. this result presented the more appearance species as a positive role, and the lower soil-moisture and the thicker soil as a negative role.

We are, now in the 21st century, that environmental preservation and the campaign for bio-diversity protection are very important issues the government must deal with as nation's main policy. To make road and building construction, housing land service, construction of golf fields, and various development works, we have made artificial topographical alterations and as a result, the cut-slop has been increased. However, without the proper study and clear planning, revegetation for the stability of the cut-slop has worked out. These efforts now are causing derangement of an ecosystem and spoiling the nature without considering for ecological adaptation. Therefore, we are going to find out the Revegetation Method to Cut-Slopes considering both the ecological adaptation and harmony with the nature.

Development of new approaches to achieve naturally good ecological potential of forest road cut-slope by making the best use of advantages of gabion systems with vegetation base materials to prevent slope failure and erosion, in the area with highly erodible soil. As a result on the type analysis of gabion systems already installed in road cut-slopes, gabion systems were generally established to prevent slope failure. Existing gabion systems can be divided into monolithic and modular system and can be divided into ten subtypes according to the purpose of establishment and combination of other measures. As a result on the monitoring of erosion amount from forest road cut-slopes in the test applications, the order of erosion amount from largest to smallest is as follows : the curved road cut-slope site where normal gabion system was established ($7,911cm^3$); the control site ($7,632cm^3$); the straight road cut-slope site where normal gabion system was established ($7,301cm^3$); the curved road cut-slope site where the new gabion system was established ($5,684cm^3$); and the straight road cut-slope site where the new gabion system ($5,325cm^3$). Therefore, the result shows that the new gabion system is more effective than the normal gabion system to reduce erosion amount from forest ! road cut-slopes. During the study period, vegetation coverages of the straight and curved road cut-slope site where the new gabion system was established were about 45% and about 36%, so average vegetation coverage of the sites where the new gabion systems was established was higher than the sites where the normal gabion systems was established. Therefore, it was concluded that the new gabion system can be more effective for cut-slope revegetation.
This study was carried out from March 1995 to February 1996 to select suitable vegetation and measures for revegetation on the highway cut-slope in consideration of the surrounding environment in the middle region of Korea. The numbers of revegetation-measures type surveyed were eighteen measures as a whole in descending order of the Seed-spraying measures, Block-sod pitching measures, and Straw-mat mulching measures. The numbers of vegetation species by highway line were 243 in Chungbu, 223 in Jungang, 210 in Kyongbu 2, 199 in Kyongbu 1, 179 in Sohaean, 163 in Seoul circulation. 148 in Shingal-ansan, 141 in Second kyongin and 123 in Kyongin respectively. The highest index of species diversity(H') was in Kyongbu 1-line and the evenness(E') on upper site was greater than that of the lower site. The revegetation measures were selected in consideration of nature of soil, gradient, area and situation, and 83 species were selected as those for revegetation measures in highway cut-slope.

To protect the surface of ground-cutting slopes occurring at the national road substitute detour [roundabout road]construction jobsite between Munduk and Wubokgu within the jurisdiction of Pohang-si and environment-friendly road construction, a test execution of re-vegetation measures on the major slopes was done and the results are as follows : As a result of finding out the number of sprouting individuals on the test construction site, the average number of sprouting individuals on the three test spots by the method of revegetation measures D, revegetation measures A, and revegetation measures B was 1,292 number of per square meter, 1,190 number of per square meter, and 1,095 number of per square meter respectively, which statistics were higher than those of test spot by the revegetation measures C. As a result of finding out living plant's breeding index [weight in dried state], the average dried weight of living plant at the test spot by the method of revegetation measures B, in case of foreign herbal species, was the highest marking 8.96 grams per square meter, and the next was 6.86grams per square meter by the method of revegetation measures D, and the next after was 6.80 grams per square meter by the method of revegetation measures A, and the last 5.93 grams per square meter by the method of revegetation measures C. As a result of finding out the covering degree on the slopes, the same average covering degree of 80% and 77.5% in revegetation measures A and revegetation measures D individually, which showed a somewhat higher covering degree than those of revegetation measures B and revegetation measures C. As a result of finding out appearing plants on the test construction site, seeding plant life was found to be sprouting on all test spot while native and foreign herbal species and herbaceous plant as well as shrubs were growing in good harmony with each other. However, in case of revegetation measures B and revegetation measures C method, foreign plant species are dominantly growing. As a result of inspecting rifts on the slopes and the excavated state by water, there existed cracks in some of base materials only in revegetation measures C method applied spot.
