  • The present paper deals with the continuous work of extending multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP), which has been quite successfully proposed on two- and three-dimensional structured grids, onto the unstructured grids. The basic idea of the present limiting strategy is to control the distribution of both cell-centered and cell-vertex physical properties to mimic a multi-dimensional nature of flow physics, which can be formulated as so called the MLP condition. The MLP condition can guarantee a high-order spatial accuracy without yielding spurious oscillations. Recently, MLP slope limiter was proposed based on the MUSCL-type reconstruction in two-dimensional case and it can be readily extended to three-dimensional case. Through various numerical analyses and extensive computations, it is observed that the proposed limiters are quite effective in controlling numerical oscillations and very accurate in capturing both discontinuous and continuous multi-dimensional flow features on 3-D tetrahedral grids.

  • Though the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method has been developed and applied to shallow water equations mainly in explicit schemes, they have been criticized for the limitation in treatment of bottom friction terms and severe CFL conditions. In this study, an implicit scheme is devised and applied to some representative benchmark problems. The linear triangular elements were employed and the Roe numerical fluxes were adopted for convective fluxes. To preserve TVD property, the slope limiter was employed. As the case studies, the model is applied to the flow around the cylinders and the dam-break flow. Then, the results are compared with the experimental and numerical data of previous studies and good agreements were observed.

  • Recently, with rapid improvement in computer hardware and theoretical development in the field of computational fluid dynamics, high-order accurate schemes also have been applied in the realm of computational hydraulics. In this study, numerical solutions of 1D shallow water equations are presented with TVD Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) finite element method. The transcritical flows such as dam-break flows due to instant dam failure and transcritical flow with bottom elevation change were studied. As a formulation of approximate Riemann solver, the local Lax-Friedrichs (LLF), Roe, HLL flux schemes were employed and MUSCL slope limiter was used to eliminate unnecessary numerical oscillations. The developed model was applied to 1D dam break and transcritical flow. The results were compared to the exact solutions and experimental data.

  • A design of 2 stage S-DLVA(successive detector log video amplifier) was studied to detect wide dynamic radar pulse ranging from -70 ㏈m to 0㏈m. A basic design idea was focused on the linear detection in logarithmic scale of wide dynamic range radar pulses from nosie-like weak power of -70 ㏈m to relatively high power 0 ㏈m. It is highly formidable, since it requires high speed detection less than 10 nsec over the operating frequency ranges from 6 to 18 ㎓. A limiter diode, a tunnel diode and an L17-C were used as a protecting device, a detector diode and a log video amplifier in companion as a single stage detector to give voltage output proportional to the input power of about 35 ㏈ dynamic range. A protype of 2-stage DLVA having one more single stage detector was fabricated with a 32 ㏈ low noise amplifier and a 3 ㏈ hybrid coupler to provide total 70 ㏈ dynamic range detection. The logging characteristics were measured to have log slope of 25m.V/㏈ against 70 ㏈ logging range from -55 ㏈m to +15 ㏈m, the log linearity of within +/- 1.5 ㏈, and tangential sensitivity was at -63 ㏈m. The pulse dynamics of rise time and recovery time were measured as 50 nsec and 1.2 $\mu$sec, respectively. The reason might be due to the parasitic capacitances of packaged limiter, tunnel diode, and L17-C.

  • A second order upwind method for linear hyperbolic systems is studied in this paper. The method approximates solutions as piecewise linear functions, and state variables and slopes of the linear functions for next time step are computed separately. We present a new method for the computation of slopes, derived from an upwinding difference for a derivative. For nonoscillatory solutions, a monotonicity algorithm is also proposed by modifying an existing algorithm. To validate our second order upwind method, numerical results for linear advection equations and linear systems for elastic and acoustic waves are given.

  • The present paper deals with the accurate and robust limiting procedure for the multi-dimensional flow analysis on unstructured meshes. The multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP) which was successfully proposed on structured grid system is extended to unstructured meshes. Based on MUSCL-type framework on unstructured meshes, the new slope limiter is devised to satisfy the MLP condition, which is quite effective to regulate the unwanted oscillations, especially on multiple dimensions. Considering the neighborhood based on the vertex of the cell, as well as the edge, this limiting strategy captures the multi-dimensional flow features very accurately with the proper stencils. From the various numerical results, these desirable characteristics of the proposed limiting strategy are clearly shown.

  • In this paper, Multistage Adaptive Partial PIC eliminating effectively the multiple access and multipath interference for DS-CDMA based W-CDMA uplink system is designed and its performance is evaluated with computer simulation. By adaptively controlling the slope of the soft limiter with received signals, the efficiency of the soft limiter can be maximized and the better performance is obtained by solving error floor problem using further precise generation of interference signal. As a result, The proposed Multistage Adaptive Partial PIC with simple optimizing method for time-variant channel showed optimum performance at fewer stages. Besides fewer stages, the interference cancellation at the output of the rake receiver considerably reduced system complexity. The Multistage Adaptive Partial PIC with precise generation and efficient cancellation of interference signal can solve error eoor problem, resulted from initial false detection and improve system performance of high data rate system.

  • A model of landslides is developed using the shallow water equations to simulate time-dependent performance of landslides. The shallow water equations are derived using the (b, s) coordinate system which can be applied in both river and ocean. The finite volume scheme employing the HLL approximate Riemann solver and the total variation diminishing (TVD) limiter is applied to deal with the numerical discontinuities occurring in landslides. For dam-break water flow and debris flow, numerical results are compared with analytical solutions and experimental data and good agreements are observed. The developed landslide model is successfully applied to predict subaerial and submarine landslides. It is found that the subaerial landslide propagates faster than the submarine landslide and the speed of propagation becomes faster with steeper bottom slope and less bottom roughness.

  • This paper presents a new and simple technique to perform MUSCL reconstruction for solving 2D shallow water equations. The modified MUSCL scheme uses weighted area ratio to apply non-uniform grid in stead of the previous method that equally distributed the difference of conservation variables to each interface. The suggested method can physically reconstruct conservation variables in case of uniform grid as well as non-uniform grid. In this study, Unsplit scheme applicable to unstructured grid is used and efficient slope limiter of TVD scheme is used to control numerical oscillation which can be occurred in modified MUSCL scheme. For accurate and efficient treatment of bed slope term, the modified MUSCL scheme is coupled with the surface gradient method. The finite volume model applied to suggested scheme is verified through a comparison between numerical solution and laboratory measurements data such as the simulations of isolated building test case and Bellos's dam break test case.
