  • In order to evaluate the stability of railway cut-slope under rainfall, explanatory variables and subordinate variables were selected for multivariate analysis. Furthermore the site which had occurred failure due to rainfall was investigated, and by executing multivariate analysis for 121 cases, critical rainfall was defined by the case that had high value of correlation factor. The 0.3 square value of maximum hourly rainfall during 24 hours before failure caused the collapse of railway cut-slope and could be used to estimate the stability of railway cut-slope. From the result of application to a collapse example, the evaluaton method by critical rainfall curve is satisfactory.

  • In Korea, collapse of railway slopes is frequently occurred due to tycoon or heavy rainfall doling rainy season and has been made personal and social damage greatly. In order to evaluate the stability of railway slopes under rainfall, explanatory variables and subordinate variables were selected for multivariate analysis. The sites which failure had occurred due to rainfall were investigated and critical rainfall was defined by the case that had high value of correlation factor after multivariate analyses for 121 cases had been executed. The maximum hourly rainfall during 24 hours before failure caused the collapse of railway embankment and the 0.3 square value of maximum hourly rainfall during 24 hours before failure caused the collapse of railway cut-slope, From the application to collapse examples, it is judged that critical rainfall curve will be used to estimate the stability of slopes.

  • This study analyzed the collapse course of a mud stone cut slope during the construction of a express and suggested a countermeasure. Experiments were carried out on bedrock mudstone to investigate the engineering characteristics and the slope stability analysis at the time the design was reviewed. In addition, stability analysis, considering the strength softening characteristics of the slope due to the Swelling-Slaking phenomenon, was also performed. As a result of the Swelling-Slaking test, the slake durability was Low-Medium, and the swell potential was Very Low. A review of the stability analysis performed at the time of the design showed different results from the actual results because LEM analysis had been performed without considering the engineering characteristics of mudstone. As a result of additional stability analysis considering the strength softening characteristics, the slope collapse point and the maximum shear strain point of the stability analysis were the same and the standard safety factor was not satisfied. As a countermeasure, a slope mitigation method was found to be most appropriate. The mitigation slope was calculated by Finite element Analysis. A comparison with BIPS to determine the applicability of a mitigation slope revealed most of the unconsolidated mudstone.

  • In recent rainy seasons, severe rain storms have caused frequent reinforced retaining wall collapses and slope sliding which have lead to casualties. In this paper, investigating cases of reinforced retaining wall failure, the causes of cracks in reinforced retaining wall and slope sliding have been examined, and a finite element analysis considering the construction phase has been done to analyze the cause and characteristics of slope sliding. As a result, reinforced retaining wall displacement has increased due to heavy rain storms and the increase size has been shown to be large. From these results, it has been analyzed that pile driving can have an effect on the collapse of reinforced retaining walls.

  • This study investigated the so far little-researched characteristics of the behaviors of rock slopes at the time of an earthquake. For the selection of the rock block, a proper model was formed by applying the similarity in consideration of the roughness and strength of the rock slope(10m) on the site, and shaking table tests were carried out according to seismic excitement acceleration, and seismic waves. In the case of the inclination angle of the joint plane of 20°, the long period wave at 0.3g or more at the time of the seismic excitement surpassed the length of 100mm, the permissible displacement (0.01H, H:slope height), which brought about the collapse of the rock; the short period wave surpassed the permissible displacement at 0.1g, which caused the collapse of the slope. The rock slope was close to a rigid block and a structure more vulnerable to the long period wave than to the short period wave. It collapsed in the short period wave even at the seismic amplitude smaller than the maximum design acceleration in Korea.

  • Recently, the occurrence of landslides has been increasing over the years due to the extreme weather event. Developments of landslides monitoring technology that reduce damage caused by landslide are urgently needed. Therefore, in this study, a strain ratio sensor was developed to predict the ground behavior during the slope failure, and the change in surface ground displacement was observed as slope failed on the field model experiment. As a result, in the slope failure, the ground displacement process increases the risk of collapse as the inverse displacement approaches zero. It is closely related to the prediction of precursor. In all cases, increase in displacement and reverse speed of inverse displacement with time was observed during the slope failure, and it is very important event for monitoring collapse phenomenon of risky slopes. In the future, it can be used as disaster prevention technology to contribute in reduction of landslide damage and activation of measurement industry.

  • One of the ways to minimize damage by a slope collapse is to set up preventive measures in advance by measuring displacements in a slope and predicting a collapse. There have been many different technologies developed to predict a collapse with diverse measuring equipment. Especially recently, attempts have been made to utilize terrestrial LiDAR, a high-tech imaging equipment to measure displacements on a scope. Terrestrial LiDAR generates three-dimensional information about an object with millimeter-level accuracy from hundreds of meters away and has been used in an array of fields including restoration of cultural assets, three-dimensional modeling, and making of topographic maps. In recent years, it has been used to measure displacements in structure as well. This study monitored displacements in slopes of high collapse risk with terrestrial LiDAR. As a result, it was able to confirm the applicability of terrestrial LiDAR to the field, and proposed monitoring methods.

  • The target of this study is large scale rock slope collapsed by around 7 pm on August, 2012, which is located at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ limestone quarries of Gangneung city, Gangwondo. The slope prior to the collapse is formed as the height of about 200 m and the average inclination of $45^{\circ}$. The estimated amount of the collapse is about $1,500,000m^3$ with respect to the slope after the collapse. Geotechnical and field investigations such as boring, geophysical prospecting, surface geological survey, geological lineaments, borehole imaging, metric 3D imaging, experimental and field test, mining work by year, and daily rainfall were performed to find the cause of rock slope failure. Various analyzes using slope mass rating, stereonet projection, limit equilibrium method, continuum and non-continuum model were conducted to check of the stability of the slope. It is expected that the cause of slope failure from the results of various analysis and survey is due to the combined factors such as topography, rainfall, rock type and quality, discontinuities, geo-structural characteristics as the limestone cavity and fault zones, but the failure of slope in case of the analysis without the limestone cavity is not occurred. Safe factor of 0.66 was obtained from continuum analysis of the slope considering the limestone cavity, so the ultimate causes of slope failure is considered to be due to the influence of limestone cavity developed along fault zone.
