  • Shear strength parameters obtained from field tests are important factors in the analysis of slope stability. In this paper, sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of input parameters on the analysis of slope stability. The input parameters selected for sensitivity analysis were slope angle, cohesion, and friction angle. Monte-Carlo Simulation method was to estimate input parameters for sensitivity analysis in slope stability, and the limit equilibrium method was used to calculate the factor of safety of slope stability. A rock slope, failed in the field, was used for the sensitivity analysis of input parameters in the analysis of slope stability. The result of analysis shows that the factor of safety of the rock slope was a little low. From partial correlation coefficient (PCC) of input parameters from the sensitivity analysis, slope stability was dependant mainly on cohesion and slope angle. The effect of friction angle was smaller than those of cohesion and slope angle on slope stability.

  • In relation to slope stability analysis, geologic characteristics and engineering properties of the discontinuities in three slopes selected are compared and analyzed by both square-inventory method and scanline survey. The aim of the study is in evaluating which method is applied better in slope stability analysis by comparing results of the two methods with those of direct observation on outcrop of slope failures generated. In each slope, results of comparative analysis among geologic and engineering properties are analyzed similarly one another. However, results of orientation analysis in slope 2 are different each other, which indicates orientation of joints in slope 2 depends on persistency and frequency of each joint and also indicates appearance of new joint set with different orientation. Probability density distribution and spacing in slope 3 are high in comparison to those in slope 2 and 3. The reasons are that distribution of psammitic rocks and development of minor folds in slope 3 unlike slope 2 and 3 are closely associated with development of joints. The research data indicate that the square-inventory method predicts more precise failure aspects and is more effective way than scanline survey in analyzing slope stability of the study area.

  • Landslide, one of the serious natural disasters, has Incurred a large loss of human and material resources. Recently, many forecasting or alarm systems based on various kinds of measuring equipment have been developed to reduce the damage of landslide. However, only a few of these equipments are guaranteed to evaluate the safety of whole side of land slope with their accessibility to the slope. In this study, we performed some experiments to evaluate the applicability of a terrestrial LiDAR as a surveying tool to measure the displacement of a land slope surface far a slope collapsing protection system. In the experiments, we had applied a slope stability method to a land slope and then forced to this slope with a load increasing step by step. In each step, we measured the slope surface with both a total station and a terrestrial LiDAR simultaneously. As the result of Slope Fracturing analysis using all targets, the LiDAR system showed that three was 1cm RMSE on X-axis, irregularity errors on Y-axis and few errors on Z-axis compare with Total Station. As the result of Slope Fracturing analysis using continuous targets, the pattern of Slope Fracturing was different according to the location of continuous targets and we could detect a continuous change which couldn't be found using Total station. The accuracy of the LiDAR data was evaluated to be comparable to that of the total station data. We found that a LiDAR system was appropriate to measuring the behaviour of land slope. The LiDAR data can cover the whole surface of the land slope, whereas the total station data are available on a small number of targets. Moreover, we extracted more detail information about the behavior of land slope such as the volume and profile changes using the LiDAR data.

  • Failure aspects of cut-slope, which induce the sequential collapses during the excavation stage, have been analyzed. Slope rock structures are investigated by examining the orientations and positions of discontinuity planes calculated based on the BIPS image inside the boreholes. Drilled core log has been also used to identify the structural defects. Clay minerals of swelling potentials are detected through XRD analysis. Numerical analysis for slope stability has been performed by utilizing the joint shear strength acquired from the direct joint shear test. Cut-slope collapse characteristics have been studied by investigating the posture of failure-prawn joint planes and the stability of tetrahedral blocks of different sizes. Cross-section analysis has been also performed to analyze the cut-slope behavior and to estimate the amount of reinforcement required to secure the stability of cut-slope. Behavior of reinforced cut-slope is also investigated by analyzing the slope monitoring data.

  • Triggering rainfall and geologic conditions with the state of slope hazard were investigated based on the field investigation and collected data on the slope hazard during the period between 2011 and 2014 in Korea. Analysis results showed that most of slope hazards occurred in metamorphic rock and debris flow was the most frequent type of slope hazard. Slope hazard increased when the higher monthly mean rainfall was recorded. However, most of slope hazard occurred when certain time elapsed after the moment of maximum hourly rainfall. Finally, more than one month of long-term rainfall was shown to be related to the frequency of slope hazard in the period.

  • Slope disaster is one of the repeated occurring geological disasters in rainy season resulting in about 23 human losses in Korea every year. The slope disaster, however, mainly depends on the spatial and climate properties. such as geology, geomorphology, and heavy rainfall, and, hence, the prediction or hazard analysis of the slope disaster is a difficult task. Therefore, GIS and various statistical methods are implemented for slope disaster analysis. In particular, GIS technique is widely used for the analysis because it effectively handles large amount of spatial data. The GIS technique. however, only considers the statistics between slope disaster occurrence and related factors, not the mechanism. Accordingly. an infinite slope model that mechanically considers the balance of forces applied to the slope is suggested here with GIS for slope disaster analysis. According to the research results, the infinite slope model has a possibility that can be utilized for landslide prediction and hazard evaluation since 87.5% of landslide occurrence areas have been predicted by this technique.

  • Forest fire is expanded to large-scale forest fire based on topographic characteristics, particularly slope. This report addresses the currently available methods of calculation slope angle from a digital elevation model and develops a new method that circumvents a number of the shortcomings associated with other algorithms. The results of the comparison of five different slope angle calculation algorithms show that maximum uphill slope angle calculation is the proper method for the purpose of predicting forest fire hazard.

  • Slope is an important mathematical concept that is connected to advanced mathematics as well as a basic concept as an indicator of the steepness of a straight line. The purpose of this study is to see how the concept of slope is presented in mathematics textbooks of middle school. For this study, we analyzed the types of slope concepts in the textbooks. In particular, we analyzed motivation activity, definition, examples of slope in them and used a concept framework of slope by Stump(1999, 2001), Moore-Russo, Connor & Rugg (2011). As a result, it was shown that middle school mathematics textbooks use the types of slope concepts to be biased when explaining the slope or presenting the slope problems. In addition, the real contexts of slope is poorly presented, and the concept types change from visual aspect to analytical aspect in the processes. This study provides suggestions on how to present the slope concepts in mathematics curriculum and middle school textbooks.

  • The lapse of time may cause in the slope structure various deterioration phenomenon progresses in the ground of slope, and collapse due to deterioration of strength, resulting in a decrease in the service life. The approach to slope stability due to the ground deterioration is a different concept from the existing limit equilibrium analysis, which is limited to the physical characteristics and geometrical structure of ground. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of various literature studies related to the slope failure characteristics and behaviors to presented the optimal formulas for shear strength reduction, such as the exponential function, the logarithmic function and the inverse hyperbolic function. And then a case study was performed on cut slope of Gyeongbu High Speed Rail construction site along the Yangsan fault zone, where the slope failure of shale layer vulnerable to deterioration occurred. As a result, it was confirmed that landslide occurred due to reduction of shear strength by deterioration, as safety factor is approx. 1.0 at the time when the slope failure occurred. Based on the comprehensive case study, as a quantitative approach to the evaluation of slope stability due to deterioration of ground, finally we propose a method for evaluating slope stability with optimal strength reduction curves.
