  • This study presents the air side heat transfer and friction characteristics of fin-tube heat exchangers with various fin types. A total of 8 samples of heat exchangers are tested. Fin patterns tested are slit, louver and plate fins. Each fin type has three cases of number of tube rows(N=1, 2, 3) and two different fin pitches. The results are plotted in terms of Colburn j-factor and friction factor f with respect to Reynolds number in the range of 200 to 510.

  • An experimental study was performed to examine the heat transfer performance of individual rows of fin-tube heat exchangers. The heat transfer performance was measured using air-enthalpy type calorimeter. The examined heat exchangers consists of $7{\Phi}$ tube and fin patterns of them are slit and louver types. Equivalent fin spacing are 18 FPI for all samples, and the number of tube rows were 2. In order to confirm that thermal boundary condition on fins of each row are the same, physically separated between two rows as well as connected heat exchangers were used. The frontal air velocity varied from 0.7 to 2.5 m/s. Heat transfer performance for each row are measured. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficient of the 2nd row were smaller than that of the 1st row at low Reynolds number while larger at high Reynolds number.

Equivalent fin spacings are 18 fins per inch(fpi) for all samples, and the number of tube rows are two. In order to confirm that thermal boundary condition on fins of each row are the same, physically separated between two rows as well as connected heat exchangers are used. The frontal air velocity is varied from 0.7 to 2.5㎧. Heat transfer performance for each row is measured. It is observed that the heat transfer coefficient of the second row is smaller than that of the first row at low Reynolds number while larger at high Reynolds number.

  • The air and refrigerant side heat transfer performances are key parameters to improve heat transfer efficiency of the heat exchanger including the fan performance. Design of the fins, treatment of the tube inside, tube diameter and tube array effect heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is used as a condenser at cooling mode and used as an evaporator at heating mode in the heat pump system. The heat pump system uses R410A as the refrigerant. The heat exchangers are consisted with 7 mm diameter tubes with slit-type fins. The study was conducted with variation of arrangement of the refrigerant path and air flow rate and refrigerant pressure drop and heat transfer rate were measured with a code tester. The capacity of the 3 path heat exchanger is more efficient than 2 or 4 path heat exchangers in heating or cooling modes.

  • A single specimen (134.3 mm standard length) of a snailfish, Careproctus notosaikaiensis was collected from a fish trap in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, East Sea, Korea. It is characterized by having the teeth strongly trilobed; dorsal fin rays 52; anal fin rays 47; pectoral fin rays 35; caudal fin rays 10; vertebrae 58; ribs 2 pairs; cephalic pores, 2-6-7-2; gill slit extending to the fifth pectoral fin ray; chin pores paired and equal in size; dorsal and anal fins with distinct reddish margins. We describe this species as the first record to Korea, and proposed the new Korean name, "Dong-hae-bun-hong-ggom-chi" for this species.

  • To investigate the design effects of a heat exchanger on a tube type, a tube circuit and a fin pitch, an experimental study on the heat transfer characteristics of finned- tube evaporators was performed. The refrigerant was R-22. A refrigerant loop was established to measure the heat transfer rate, the air heat transfer coefficient. The experimental results showed that the heat transfer characteristics of the evaporators were affected by the design parameters. And the heat transfer rate of the slit fin was better about 25%, compared to those of the louver fin. In the present experimental range, the heat transfer performance with the straight tube circuit was more remarkable than that of the zigzag tube circuit, as seen from temperature variations of the evaporator exit. $\jmath$-factor on the tube type, the tube circuit and the fin pinch decreased, as increasing Reynolds number.

  • In the present study, the air-side heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the fin-tube and PF heat exchangers have been experimentally investigated under the cooling standard condition. Fin type of PF heat exchanger is a triangler and squarer form. The experimental data of the slit fin-tube and two kinds of PF heat exchangers are measured using the air-enthalpy calorimeter and the constant temperature water bath. As the inlet air velocity increases, the heat transfer rate and pressure drop of the heat exchanger increased. The heat transfer rate and pressure drop of PF-2 heat exchanger of the squarer fin is larger than that of PF-1 heat exchanger of the triangler fin. As the inlet air temperature increases, the heat transfer rate decreases and the pressure drop is nearly uniform.

  • Heat transfer performances of individual row of two-row fin and tube heat exchangers are experimentally investigated. Tested are four heat exchangers which are geometrically identical with the exception of fin shape, slit or louver, and that the fins between the first row and the second row are connected or separated. The tube diameter and fin spacing of the heat exchangers examined are 7mm and 1.4mm, respectively. All thermal fluid measurements are made using a psychrometric calorimeter. In order to evaluate air-side heat transfer coefficients of individual rows, tube-side water flow rates of individual rows are independently controlled such that the water-side temperature drops in each row remain at $5^{\circ}C$. Frontal air velocity varies in the range from 0.7m/s to 2.5m/s. Heat transfer coefficients are presented in terms of Colburn ${\jmath}-factor$. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the upstream row is larger than that for the downstream row at low Reynolds numbers.

  • This study is to systematically analyze the effect of various kinds of design parameters on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of heat exchanger with a slit fin. TAGUCHI method, known to us as a very reasonable tool in the parametric study, is employed in the present work. Experimental factors have been limited to seven cases, considering the production of sample and the cost. The 18 kinds of large scale models are made by compounding level on each factor and the heat transfer and flow characteristics on each model has been analyzed. The present results allow us to be able to quantitatively estimate the various parameters affecting the heat exchanger performance, and main factors for an optimum design of a heat exchanger have been selected. The optimum design value on each parameter was presented and the reproducibility on the results was guaranteed.
