Background: This research investigates the degrees of slipperiness felt by the participants who walk on contaminants applied to a floor surface to decide degrees of slipperiness for various contaminants. Methods: For the experiment, 30 participants walked on a floor to which six contaminants were applied. All participants took the analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-based slipperiness questionnaire survey for the six kinds of contaminants, and the results were compared with the coefficient of friction. Results: The results of slip risk from the AHP indicate that grease is the most slippery of the six contaminants, followed by diesel engine oil, hydraulic oil, cooking oil, water-soluble cutting oil, and water in a decreasing order of slipperiness. When the results of slip risk from the AHP are compared with the static coefficient of friction for each contaminant, the order of slip risk follows the same trend. Although the results of slip risk from the AHP coincide with the static coefficient of friction, further study would be needed to investigate this relationship. Conclusion: This study will contribute as reference material for future research on preventing industrial accidents that result in falls from high places due to slipping.

External pre-stressing is often used in strengthening or retrofitting of steel-concrete composite beams. In this way, a proper numerical model should be able to trace the completely nonlinear response of these structures at service and ultimate loads. A three dimensional finite element model based on shell elements for representing the concrete slab and the steel beam are used in this work. Partial interaction at the slab-beam interface can be taken into account by using special beam-column elements as shear connectors. External pre-stressed tendons are modeled by using one-dimensional catenary elements. Contact elements are included in the analysis to represent the slipping at the tendon-deviator locations. Validation of the numerical model is established by simulating seven pre-stressed steel-concrete composite beams with experimental results. The model predictions agree well with the experimental results in terms of collapse loads, path failures and cracking lengths at negative moment regions due to service loads. Finally, the accuracy of some simplified formulas found in the specialized literature to predict cracking lengths at interior supports at service loading and for the evaluation of ultimate bending moments is also examined in this work.

Reducer is a device to transmit and change torque and speed from drive shaft to driven shaft with excellent transmission efficiency, and it is widely used in many areas today. Reduction gear consists of two axes, gear, bearing supporting axes, and housing. The simplest method to transmit rotation or power to multiple axes is to attach circular plates to two axes and contact each other. However, in this case, if increasing number of rotations or if contact pressure is small, because of slipping, it cannot transmit power. For problems for the current reducer case, it is heavy and its assembling and repair is difficult. In addition, there are few studies about manufacturing and performance testing of worm gear reducer, causing lack of the foundation to improve the product competition and the performance.

The phenomenology of shock loading effects in brittle mass has been of interest to researchers and engineers. The shock loading as blasting causes strong stress waves in the structures. Discontinuous faces due to shock waves interrupt the tensile stress wave propagation and reflect the stress wave propagation. To predict the fracturing behavior of brittle mass, it is required for the numerical method that can analyze the colliding and slipping behavior of discontinuous faces and the wave propagation in the mass, simultaneously In this study, the wave propagation in the brittle materials is analyzed using the modified distinct element method to be able to predict the behavior of discontinuous structures. The behavior of an unsupported bar subjected to loading at the end is analyzed to verify the rigid body motion of a bar and the relative displacement in the bar. The colliding behavior of two bars is analyzed to investigate the propagation of stress waves in the bar. The fracturing behavior of a bar due to impact loading is analyzed to investigate the propagation of stress waves in the bar with and without the discontinuous faces. The applicability of the modified distinct element method to the wave propagation problems is investigated.
Purpose: This study analyzed the characteristics of occupational injuries and illnesses of the nursing staff to reveal the prevalence of the major diseases and the predominant causes of the injuries in the nursing environment. Methods: Total 3,455 work-related compensation cases of nursing staff from January 1 2000 to December 31 2012, were selected. The specific types of the diseases, injuries, causes and the time of the incidence were analyzed. Results: Majority of the compensated cases were young women under 30 years old. The composition of the occupational injuries and illness was 74.5% and 25.5%, respectively. Occupational infection was the major part of the occupational illnesses (47.3%), and 74% of them were tuberculosis. Musculoskeletal disorder (12.6%) was followed the infectious disease, and 36.4% of them occurred while moving the patients. Slipping was the most frequent injury; most of them resulted in the lower extremities injury. Most of the injuries increased during shift change, except workplace violence, which increased later than 19:00. Conclusion: Occupational injuries and illnesses of nursing staff need the specific prevention strategy, and the prevention strategy should be suitable for the nursing workplace.
In this study, to investigate the dangerous driving on the curves, a driving test was performed in 10 km from Jinan and to Jeonju(Bugui Gas Station~Whasim Intersection), on the national highway No. 26. For the dangerous driving felt by the driver when a driver is driving on the curves, lateral acceleration and yaw rate were analyzed. And then, the reference value of lateral acceleration and yaw rate was computed. Through observing the driving speed and the characteristics of ordinary drivers using the applicable roads or following them as they drive, the driving test was performed again and the section exceeding the reference value set as above was computed. On the dangerous driving area, exceeding the reference value, total 10 accidents took place from 2006 till 2010, and slipping caused by speeding accounted for more than 70% of the accidents. It was concluded that the result of an analysis through recording drivers' driving characteristics, was reliable.
In this paper, the serrated forming process is analyzed with finite element method. The seal should secure the overlapping portions of ligature, which has teeth for ligature to prevent from slipping each other after clamping. In the simulation, rigid-plastic finite element model has been applied to the serration forming process. Serration or teeth forming characteristics has been analyzed numerically in terms of teeth geometry based on different forming conditions. Analyses are focused to find the influence of different die movements and geometries on the tooth geometry, which is crucial for securing overlapping portions of ligature. Two major process variables are selected, which are the face angle and entry angle of punch, respectively. Extensive investigation has been performed to reveal the influences of different entry and face angles on the geometry of teeth formation in the simulation. Three different face angles of punch have been selected to apply to each simulation of serrated sheet forming process with every case of punch entry angles. Furthermore, tooth geometries predicted from simulation have been applied to the indention process for comparing proper tooth geometries to secure the sealing.

Osteoporotic patients who undergo percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) have the risk of a repeated collapse of their adjacent vertebral body due to alteration of load transfer into the adjacent vertebral body. The authors have experienced a rare case of repeated osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCF) resulting in extreme multi-level PVP. A 74-year-old female developed severe back pain after slipping down one month ago. Her X-ray and MR images indicated a T11 VCF. She underwent successful PVP with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Two weeks later, she returned to our hospital due to a similar back pain. Repeated X-ray and MR images showed an adjacent VCF on T12. A retrial of PVP was performed on T12, which provided immediate pain relief. Since then, repeated collapses of the vertebral body occurred 12 times in 13 levels within a 24-month period. Each time the woman was admitted to our hospital, she was diagnosed of newly developed VCFs and underwent repeated PVPs with PMMA, which finally eased back pain. Based on our experience with this patient, repeated multiple PVP is not dangerous because its few and minor complications. Therefore, repeated PVP can serve as an effective treatment modality for extreme-multi level VCFs.
Background: Household waste collectors (HWCs) are exposed to hazardous conditions. This study investigates the patterns of workplace injuries and work-related illnesses of HWCs. Methods: This study uses cases of workplace injuries and work-related illnesses of HWCs that occurred between 2010 and 2011. We analyzed 325 cases of injuries and 36 cases of illnesses according to the workers' age, length of employment, size of workplace, injured part of body, day and month of injury, type of accident, agency of accident, and collection process. Results: There were significant differences in the effect of workers' length of employment, injured part of body, type of accident, agency of accident, and collection process. Results show that most injuries occur in workers in their 50s and older. This study also shows that 51.4% of injuries occur at businesses with 49 employees or fewer. Injuries to waste collectors happen most often when workers are electrocuted after slipping on the ground. The second most prevalent form of injury is falling, which usually happens when workers hang from the rear of the truck during transportation or otherwise slip and fall from the truck. Work-related illnesses amongst waste collectors are mostly musculoskeletal conditions due to damaging postures. Conclusion: These findings will be instructive in devising policies and guidelines for preventing workplace injuries and work-related illnesses of HWCs.
Intraorbital wooden foreign bodies may present difficulties in diagnosis due to their radiolucent nature. Delayed recognition and management can cause significant complications. We present a case report that demonstrates these problems and the sequela that can follow. A 56-year-old man presented with a 3-cm laceration in the right upper eyelid, sustained by a slipping accident. After computed tomography (CT) scanning and ophthalmology consultation, which revealed no fractures and suggested only pneumophthalmos, the wound was repaired by a plastic surgery resident. Ten days later, the patient's eyelid displayed signs of infection including pus discharge. Antibiotics and revisional repair failed to solve the infection. Nearly 2 months after the initial repair, a CT scan revealed a large wooden fragment in the superomedial orbit. Surgical exploration successfully removed the foreign body and inflamed pocket, and the patient healed uneventfully. However, the prolonged intraorbital infection had caused irreversible damage to the superior rectus muscle, with upgaze diplopia persisting 1 year after surgery and only minimal muscle function remaining. We report this case to warn clinicians of the difficulties in early diagnosis of intraorbital wooden foreign bodies and the grave prognosis of delayed management.
