  • Analytical model of beat response is derived on a slightly asymmetric ring and is veryfied by experiment. The asymmetric ring is a simplified model used to explain the beat property of a Korean bell. The asymmetric ring has mode pair having slight frequency difference in each radial mode. Each mode pair produces beat phenomenon by the interaction of the two close frequency components. Based on the analytical model, beat maps are first proposed and characteristics of beat on the circumference are detaily explained.

  • Impulse response of a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell is derived. Receptance method is applied to obtain the vibration mode and natural frequency of the slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell. Impulse response model is used to identify the vibration beat characteristics of King Song-Dok Bell. The theretical mode is compared and verified by the measured mode of King Song-Dok Bell. • In this study, we experimentally investigate the equivalent ring theory for a slightly asymmetric ring. The slightly asymmetric ring has mode pair and frequency pair due to the small asymmetry and this mode pair generates beat in vibration and sound. In this paper, a slightly asymmetric ring is modeled as the equivalent ring, i.e., the assemblage of a symmetric ring and imperfect point masses. The equivalent ring has the same mode pair condition as that of the original asymmetric ring. Effect of the additional mass attachment is investigated by the equivalent ring theory and the result is compared with those of the measurement and the finite element analysis. It is confirmed that the original ring and the equivalent ring show the same change in frequency and mode under the various additional imperfection mass conditions. The equivalent ring theory explains how the asymmetric elements influence the mode characteristics and provides useful information to tune the beat property.

  • Vibration beat phenomenon is theoretically investigated on a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell, which is a simplified model of Korean bell. Mode pairs of the slightly asymmetric shell are obtained by receptance analysis and impulse response of the shell is derived using modal expansion and Laplace transform. Based on the impulse response model, beat mapping method is proposed to explain the reason that the beat of a bell vibration shows periodic distribution on the circumference. Beat characteristics of King Song-Dok Bell are explained in detail using the beat map and the measured modal data.

  • The beat distribution property of the King Seong-deok Divine Bell is investigated by experiment and analysis. The beat map method is proposed to explain the beat distribution property on the circumference of the bell. For the analytical investigation, an analytical model of the vibration beat is derived on a slightly asymmetric shell of revolution by using the modal expansion method. In the analytical method, the beat map can be drawn only if the modal parameters of the bell are obtained. The analytical beat model is applied to draw the beat map of the King Seong-deok Divine Bell. The validity of the analytical method is verified by comparing the analytical beat maps with the experimental results. This paper proposes a visualization method of the beat and theoretically identifies the reason why the clear and unclear beats repeat periodically along the circumference of the bell and how the striking position influences the beat distribution property.

  • Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) are major cause of the geomagnetic storms. To minimize the projection effect by coronagraph observations, we consider two CME cone models: an ice-cream cone model and an asymmetric cone model. These models allow us to determine three dimensional parameters of HCMEs such as radial speed, angular width, and the angle between sky plane and cone axis. In this study, we compare these parameters obtained from both models using 50 well-observed HCMEs from 2001 to 2002. Then we obtain the root mean square error (RMS error) between measured projection speeds and estimated ones for the models. As a result, we find that the radial speeds obtained from the models are well correlated with each other (R=0.89), and the correlation coefficient of angular width is 0.68. The correlation coefficient of the angle between sky plane and cone axis is 0.42, which is much smaller than what is expected. The reason may be due to the fact that the source locations of the asymmetric cone model are assumed to be near the center. The average RMS error of the asymmetric cone model (86.2km/s) is slightly smaller than that of the ice-cream cone model (88.6km/s).

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the cumulative fatigue of trunk muscles andthe period of recovery time during repetitive lifting and lowering tasks with symmetric and asymmetric postures.Ten subjects participated in the experiment. Subjects had 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes recovery time respectivelywhile they were performing the lifting and lowering task repeatedly for 3 minutes with the weight equivalent to25% level of MVC. EMG signals from ten trunk muscles were collected and the fatigue level was analyzedquantitatively. In results, the local muscle fatigue was no longer accumulated when 5 minutes recovery time wasgiven in symmetric position. For asymmetric position, it took longer minutes to prevent the fatigue accumul-ation. Different trunk muscles indicated slightly different recovery patterns in terms of MPF (Mean Powerfrequency) value. This result would help ergonomist design the length of recovery time to control the cumulative fatigue of trunkmuscles in industry with repetitive lifting and lowering task.
