  • Gagamguibitang, a composite Korean medicinal drug prescribed by us, was evaluated for its sedative effects by measurements of potentiation on pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, anticonvulsive activities in animal model, inhibitory effect on GABA transaminase activity, and antioxidative activities in vitro- and/or in vivo assay. The results were summerized as follows : 1. Gagamguibitang showed about 2-fold prolongation of pentobarbital-induced sleeping time compared to the control group after administration(p.o) with 2.0g/kg of mice body weight. 2. Gagamguibitang strongly lengthened onset time of pentylenetetrazole-induced convulsion, shortened the duration of convulsion and diminished the lethality after treatment(p.o) with 1.0g/kg of mice body weight. 3. Gagamguibitang inhibited dose-dependently the brain GABA transaminase activity in vitro compared to the control group and in vivo compared to the pentylenetetrazole-treated group. 4. Gagamguibitang inhibited effectively brain lipid peroxidation by 45.8% at a dose of l0mg/ml in vitro and by 47.5% after oral treatment with 0.5g/kg of mice body weight in vivo assay. 5. Gagamguibitang exhibited a potent scavenging activity on DPPH radical in a dose-dependent manner with ca. 92% activity at l0mg/ml. As a result, Gagamguibitang can be useful for the effective sedative drug in clinical application.

  • Clinical observation was made on 52 cases of Stroke that were confined through brain CT, MRI scan. The Stroke cases wee classified into the following kinds cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebellar or brain stem infarction, cerebellar or brain stem hemorrhage. And among the 52 cases of Stroke cerebral infarction was noticed in 75.00%, cerebral hemorrhage in 11.54%, cerebellar or brain stem infarction in 9.52%, cerebellar or brain stem hemorrhage in 3.85%. The ratio between males and females was 1.74:1 in the whole groups of Stroke and most cases were over 60 of age. As the time of hospitalization, most patients hospitalized from 1 day after stroke to 7 days after stroke. And as the course of hospitalization, most patients hospitalized first. Among the preceding disease at the onset of Stroke hypertention was noted in 32.69%, and deabetes mellitus or heart problem was noted frequently(15.39%). Electrocardiography findings were as follows: The normal was noted in 53.85%, the abnormal in 46.15%. And as the abnormal, left ventricular hypertrophy was noted in 17.54%. The predisposing factors or conditions at the onset of brain infarction were usually initiated during the time of sleeping and those of brain hemorrhage chiefly during the time of exercising like overwork or walking etc. It was noted that smoking a pack of cigarette showed highest disease rate(33.33%) among the average of smoking amount of one day in case of man. Prior to attack, the most chiefly complain was dyspnea or discomfort on chest region. And 30.70% of patients had no previous sign. There were a large number of recurrent cases. The first attack was noted in 71.15%, the 2nd attack in 23.08%, the 3rd attack in 5.77%.

  • This paper reviews the global effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the mental health of children and adolescents in South Korea, the U.S., Japan, and China. We reviewed research on deteriorated mental health, including increased suicide, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm. Various studies have shown that students' mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, have worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the number of students who committed suicide has significantly increased in the U.S. and Japan. Factors such as prior mental health status, change in daily routine, reduced physical activity, excessive screen time, overuse of electronic devices, and reduced social support have been reported to have a significant effect. The chain of deteriorating mental health among the youth began at the onset of COVID-19, social distancing, and school closure. As youths began to stay at home instead of going to school, they lost opportunities to connect with their friends or teachers, who could provide support outside of their homes. Young people spent less time on physical activity and more time online, which damaged their sleeping schedule and daily routine. In preparing for the post-pandemic phase, we should thoroughly analyze the long-term effects of the pandemic on youth mental health, while simultaneously tackling current imminent issues.

  • Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the effects of mattress type on both objective and subjective sleep quality in healthy good sleepers. Methods: Fifteen healthy good sleepers with a mean age of 30.8 years participated in this study. A randomized crossover trial was carried out using two different mattress types: a standard mattress and a contour coil mattress. After a night of adaptation, all participants were randomized to either a standard mattress or a contour coil mattress. Then, nocturnal polysomnography was conducted for two consecutive nights. Subjective evaluations were obtained using a self-report questionnaire before and after the polysomnographic recording sessions. Results: The polysomnographic showed no differences in total sleep time, sleep stage, or wake time after sleep onset between the two mattress conditions. Of the polysomnographic variables, only sleep onset latency was significantly reduced for the contour coil mattress. Additionally, participants reported better subjective sleep quality when sleeping on the contour coil mattress, according to the questionnaires. Conclusion: The type of mattress might affect not only subjective, but also objective sleep quality, including sleep onset latency.

  • This experiment was performed to investigate whether the combined-preparation of crude drugs (The $Well^{TM}$ Preparation, TW), has hypnotic effects and/or enhances pentobarbital-induced sleep behaviors. TW was mixed with water extracts of Ginseng Radix red, Germinated brown rice, cultured mountain ginseng, and 50% ethanol extracts of Longanae Arillus, Nelumbinis Folium and Chrysanthemi Flos. TW (100 mg/kg, p.o.) reduced sleep onset and prolonged sleep time induced by pentobarbital similar to muscimol (0.2 ${\mu}M$), a $GABA_A$ receptor agonist. Also, TW (2 ${\mu}g$/ml) and pentobarbital (2.5 ${\mu}M$) did not affect the chloride influx in primary cultured cerebellar granule cells, respectively, but the combined-treatment of TW (2 ${\mu}g$/ml) and pentobarbital (2.5 ${\mu}M$) increased the chloride influx onto the cells. In conclusion, TW augments pentobarbital-induced sleep behaviors; these effects may result from chloride channel activation.

  • In order to grasp the occupational add social characteristics of the onset of lumbago among elementary and high school teachers, 423 elementary and high school teachers were taken as subjects of study through questionaires. The following are the results of the study which were analyzed through data, conducted for one month in the City of Taegu, between Jun. 90, and Jul. 20 of 1993: 1. the incidence of lumbago of the entire teachers was $75.2\%$, with the elementary school teacher$(81.9\%)$ higher than high school teacher$(70.6\%)$. 2. In the relationship between the characteristics of job and lumbago. characteristics of teaching, monthly income, chores and satisfaction with job did not show significance, but weekly teaching hours, mental stress and the degree of comfort of chair reflected significantly(p<0.01). 3. In social relationship, personal nature, sleeping hours and place, smoking and drinking did not hold significance, but daily average walking hours, posture during sleep, general health conidition(p<0.01) and daily average riding hours and regular exercise(p<0.05) etc. showed significant relationships. 4. In the sistuation of lumbago of the teacher groups, no significant differences wee found in the cause of lumbago, duration of lumbago, sick leaves and recognigion of lumbago, but it was contrary in the treatment of lumbago(p<0.01). Based on the above results, lumbago is closely related to occupational and social factors, the prevention and treatment can be diversified based on occupation and environment. Consequently, regular educational program is considered imperative mainly on prevention of lumbago by putting aside time for such purpose.
