  • Flat plate are being used more in buildings requiring a high level of technical installations or in buildings needing changeable room arrangements during their life time such as office buildings. The main problem in flat plate is its weak resistance against a punching failure at its slab-column connections. Therefore, in this research, an experimental study on full-scale interior slab-column connection was performed. Three types of shear reinforcements were tested to prevent brittle punching shear failure that could lead to collapse of the structure. A series of four flat plate specimens including a specimen without shear reinforcement and three specimens with shear reinforcements were tested. The slabs were tested up to failure using monotonic vertical shear loading. The presences of the shear reinforcements substantially increased punching shear capacity and ductility of the interior slabcolumn connections. The test results showed that a slab that did not have enough bond length failed before shear reinforcement yielded due to anchorage slip. Also, FEM analyses were performed to study an effect of slab thickness and concrete compressive strength on the flat plate slab. The analytical study results were used to propose a method to calculate performance capacity of shear reinforcement in slab-column connection.

  • This paper is concerned with the investigation of the structural behavior of waffle structure. Parametric variation on waffle floor thickness, main beam depth and column sizes are imposed to study the effects on mode shapes and natural frequencies of waffle structures. Comparisons between FEM models using shell and 3D-solid elements have also been made. The analysis result has shown that the mode frequencies increase with i) increase in main beam depth at level 2 and ii) decrease in waffle slab thickness at level 3. Both 3D and 2D model shown similar mode shapes. Besides, there is a consistent difference in mode frequencies between 3D and 2D model ranging from 25% to 36%.

  • This paper presents compression capacity of transfer system in pilotis subjected to axial load. Recently, transfer system is usually used in low floors of wall-typed apartments when members' sections are suddenly changed between upper walls and bottom columns. It can help transfer loads from the walls to the columns. Especially, a transfer girder system is usually used as one of transfer systems applied to a pilotis. However, the transfer girder system has low constructability and economics. Therefore, the other transfer system with transfer slab was suggested and has been studied. In this paper, to evaluate the compression capacity of transfer slab, tests were conducted on pilotis transfer slab systems subjected to axial load. First of all, two specimens were determined by FEM. The main parameter is length of the bottom columns. The lengh of the bottom columns were 40% and 50% of length of upper walls in the tranfer slab specimens. Results showed that the compression capacity of piloti transfer systems subjected to axial load was affected by length of bottom columns. The compression capacity is 52% higher than design strength for specimen with the bottom column's length of 40% of length of the upper wall and 46% for specimen with the bottom column's length of 50% of length of the upper wall.

  • In this paper, we propose the use of stochastic finite element method, that is popularly employed in mechanical structure analysis, for more practical designing purpose of RF device. The proposed method is formulated based on the vector finite element method cooperated by pertubation analysis. The method utilizes sensitivity analysis algorithm with covariance matrix of the random variables that represent for uncertain physical quantities such as length or various electrical constants to compute the probabilities of the measure of performance of the structure. For this computation one need to know the variance and covariance of the random variables that might be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analyzing several device with different be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analysis several device with different measure of performanes. For the convenience of formulation, two dimensional analysis has been performed to apply it into waveguide with dielectric slab. In the problem the dielectric constant of the dielectric slab is considered as random variable. Another example is matched waveguide and cavity problem. In the problem, the dimension of them are assumed to be as random variables and the expectations and variances of quality factor have been computed.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) in order to investigate the flexural performance of one-way slabs strengthened by epoxy-bonded steel plates. Four point loading scheme is selectively chosen. A model is developed to implement the material constitutive relationships and non-linearity. Five Slabs were modeled in FEM software using ABAQUS. One slab was unstrengthened control slab and the others were strengthened with steel plates with varying the plate thickness and configuration. In order to verify the accuracy of the numerical model, a comparison was done between the experimental results available in the literature and the proposed equations by ACI 318-11 for the calculation of ultimate load capacities of strengthened slabs, the agreement has proven to be good and FEA attained accurate results compared with ACI code. A parametric study was also carried out to investigate the influence of thickness of steel plate, strength of epoxy layer and type of strengthening plate on the performance of plated slabs. Also, the practical and technical feasibility of splitting the steel plate in strengthening process has been taken into account. For practical use, the author recommended to use bonded steel plate as one unit rather than splitting it to parts, because this saves more effort and reduces the risk of execution errors as in the case of multiple bonded parts. Both techniques have nearly the same effect upon the performance of strengthened slabs.

  • The connection part (corbel) between bottom slab and side wall in inground LNG storage tank has hinge conditions partly fixed by using anchor bars to reduce stress concentration. The corbel deforms in both radial and vertical directions under load conditions of the LNG tank such as LNG temperature, hydraulic pressure, etc. Membrane is an important part from the viewpoint of design because the deformation of the corbel is transformed directly to the membrane and superposed with other deformations. Behavior of the corbel has been investigated through various sensors to measure temperature, load and displacement. And the test data have been compared with finite element results analysis to propose a more reasonable design of LNG storage tank.

  • In H shape rolling, accurate predictions of deformation and temperature distribution in a billet are quite important because they are the main factors in determining roll calibers and roll pass schedules. Many researches have been performed to achieve the predictions, but most of them are limited to single pass or isothermal assumptions. In the present investigation, it is attempted to develop a method to predict the deformation and temperature distributions which is applicable to a complete rolling process that usually consists of several rollings under different rolls for a period of time. The method works by coupling two analyses : one is an approximate analysis for temperature distribution prediction and the other is the slab-FEM hybrid analysis for deformation prediction. The method is applied to analyze a "H" shape rolling process consisting of nine passes under four different rolls. In the present paper, basic ideas of the method are presented. Also, shapes of cross sections, strain and temperature distributions, roll separating force and roll torque predicted by the method are discussed.

  • The structure of PSC box girder with FRP strut has a form of supporting the cantilever part in the widened upper slab by modifying the existing PSC box girder efficiently, and it is able to build an economical and aesthetically pleasing bridge as it reduces the size of the lower structure by reducing the self-weight of the upper structure. In this research, loading test of PSC Box Girder using full-scale mock-up was conducted and FEM analysis was performed. By comparing results, structural safety of the FRP strut and the upper slab following application of the strut in the PSC Box Girder Bridge were evaluated.

  • Hollows are easily made and bearing capacity is lowered near underground structures of concrete pavement because of poor compaction and long term settlement of the ground. Distresses occur and lifespan is shortened because of larger stress induced by external loadings expected than that in the design. In this paper, the distresses of the concrete pavement slab over box culverts were investigated at the Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) test road. The transverse cracking of the slabs over the culverts was compared between up and down lines with different soil cover depth. The box culvert without soil cover and concrete pavement were modeled and analyzed by the finite element method(FEM) to verify the transverse cracking at the test road. Wheel loading was applied after self weight of the pavement and temperature gradient of the concrete slab at Yeojoo, Gyeonggi where the test road is located were considered. Positions of maximum tensile stress and corresponding positions of the wheel loading were found for each loading combination. Joint position minimizing the maximum tensile stress was found and optimal slab length over the culverts with diverse size were suggested.

  • A realistic FEM structural model is developed to predict the behavior, load transfer, force distribution and performance of a riverine platform under earthquake and environmental loads. The interaction between the transfer plate and the piles supporting the platform is investigated. Transfer plate structures have the ability to redistribute the loads from the superstructure above to piles group below, to provide safe transits of loads to piles group and thus to the soil, without failure of soil or structural elements. The distribution of piles affects the distribution of stress on both soil and platform. A materially nonlinear earthquake response spectrum analysis was performed on this riverine platform subjected to earthquake and environmental loads. A fixed connection between the piles and the platform is better in the design of the piles and the prospect of piles collapse is low while a hinged connection makes the prospect of damage high because of the larger displacements. A fixed connection between the piles and the platform is the most demanding case in the design of the platform slab (transfer plate) because of the high stress values developed.
