  • This paper investigates the thermal storage performance of the office building which has adopted an air conditioning system with its slab structure as a regenerator. Four cases of the thermal storage performance experiment were conducted. Room air temperatures, floor slab temperatures, temperatures around the air conditioning unit were logged and analyzed. The load handling capacity of the air conditioning unit and the amount of heat stored in the slab were decided from those experiments. Several efficiencies were investigated to evaluate the performance of the thermal storage. The results concluded that the slab as a regenerator is very effective in cutting down peak loads of the office building.

  • In this paper, the optimal thermal storage time of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage in office building was analyzed on the basis of the gradient method algorithm. The sum of room temperature deviation and heat extraction rate was set to the criterion function. It was calculated that four hours is the optimal thermal storage time under the standard evaluation criterion. Furthermore, some case studies were executed by controlling ratio of weight functions of room temperature deviation and heat extraction rate in criterion function. It is possible to design many kinds of optimal operation of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage by controlling ratio of the weight functions in criterion function.

  • In this paper, the sensitivity analysis was examined about the main factors that compose an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage by using the analytic solution. Those factors are the insulation performance of floor slab surface, the slab thickness, the heat capacity of floor slab, the air change rate, and the insulation performance of the wall. The slab thickness and heat capacity of floor slab that minimize heating loads was gained by sensitivity analysis. It is became clear that the insulation performance of slab surface, high airtightness and high heat insulation are important design factors in air conditioning system with slab thermal storage.

  • In this paper, the appropriate thermal storage time of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage was considered by use of summer measurement values. Two standards of heat extraction rate and criterion function were established as the standard that evaluates appropriateness. When heat extraction rate was a standard, zero hour and seven hours were obtained as appropriate thermal storage time, in the case of evaluation by energy consumption and running cost individually. Also, when criterion function was a standard, the difference between energy consumption and running cost was small, it was because the weight function to room air temperature deviation was much bigger than heat extraction rate.

  • In this paper, the optimal bang-bang control problem of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage was formulated by gradient method. Furthermore, the numeric solution obtained by gradient method algorithm was compared with the analytic solution obtained on the basis of maximum principle. The control variable is changed uncontinuously at the start time of thermal storage operation in an analytic solution. On the other hand, it is showed as a continuous solution in a numeric solution. The numeric solution reproduces the analytic solution when a tolerance for convergence is applied severely. It is conceivable that gradient method is effective in the analysis of the optimal bang-bang control of the large-scale system like an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage.

  • It is known that slab thermal storage which uses concrete slab as thermal material is effective in the load leveling and using the nighttime electric power. The temperature distribution is not constant in plenum in thermal storage time by beams, ducts such as several factor. It is considered that this fact will effect on efficiency of thermal storage and indoor thermal environment. The purpose of this paper is to examine the thermal environment inside plenum. A macro model was made for the analysis of indoor thermal environment as the first step. The flow rate distribution and temperature distribution of object room model was examined by use of basic equations such as airflow by the pressure difference between unit cells, heat flow by air and heat transfer.

  • In this paper, optimal control strategy of the air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage was investigated based on the optimal control theory. An optimal heat output to the plenum chamber and the air-conditioned room was determined based on two kinds of criterion functions. The first one requires small deviation in room air temperature from a set-point value and low energy consumption. It is shown that the optimized control is to store heat through the whole storage time and to increase storage rate gradually with time. As the second case, a criterion that both a deviation of operative temperature from a set-point temperature and the energy consumption should be minimized was adopted. The room air temperature was a little high and the cooling load during storage time was reduced, compared with the results when a criterion function considering only the room air temperature is used.

  • Tong-young LNG tank is a LNG storage tank of 140,000 kl, and it is composed of Bottom Slab(Annular, Center), Outer Wall, Ring Beam and Roof. Generally, when concrete temperature arise, the complex thermal stress of inner and outer part can cause serious thermal crack and damage at structure. So in this paper, for the control of this thermal crack, we did the concrete mix design with the base of fly-ash 30% substitute at binder, and through the computer modelling at Bottom Slab(Annular, Center), Outer Wall, Ring Beam and Roof, we studied the probability of thermal crack by thermal crack index.

  • It has been shown that the air-conditioning system with slab cooling storage is effective in cutting peak load and utilizing nighttime electric power. The stochastic properties of internal heat generation which has great influence on the cooling load are examined in this paper. Based on the measured cooling load and electric power consumption in an office building with slab cooling storage, stochastic time series models to simulate these random processes are investigated. Furthermore, a calculated result by an optimal control method of thermal analysis taking into account the internal heat is compared with the measured cooling load.

  • An optimal control of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage is investigated by making use of the Maximum Principle. An optimal heat input to a plenum chamber and an air-conditioned room is determined by minimizing a criterion function which is given as integral sum of two terms. The first term is the square of the deviation in the room air temperature from the set-point value, and the second is the absolute value of the heat input. The result indicates that it tries to keep a room air temperature in set-point value by heating as much as possible at the time of a setup of a room air temperature or just before that, in order to avoid a heat loss arising at the time of the non-air conditioning. The result is compared with that of the case when the square of the heat input is used as a criterion.
