  • A mathematical heat transfer model for the prediction of heat flux on the slab surface and temperature distribution in the slab has been developed by considering the thermal radiation in the furnace and transient conduction governing equations in the slab, respectively. The furnace is modeled as radiating medium with spatially varying temperature and constant absorption coefficient. The slab is moved with constant speed through non-firing, charging, preheating, heating, and soaking zones in the furnace. Radiative heat flux which is calculated from the radiative heat exchange within the furnace modeled using the FVM by considering the effect of furnace wall, slab, and combustion gases is applied as the boundary condition of the transient conduction equation of the slab. Heat transfer characteristics and temperature behavior of the slab is investigated by changing such parameters as absorption coefficient and emissivity of the slab. Comparison with the experimental work shows that the present heat transfer model works well for the prediction of thermal behavior of the slab in the reheating furnace.

  • The apparent thickening of the subducting slab in the shallow lower mantle has been attributed to slab buckling. However, the scaling laws have not been quantitatively evaluated for the buckling behavior of the subducting slab when phase transformations are considered. Thus, two-dimensional dynamic subduction experiments are formulated to evaluate the effect of phase transformations on the buckling behavior of the subducting slab. The model calculations show that the phase transformation from olivine to wadsleyite at a depth of 410 km plays an important role in the development of slab buckling; increased slab pull due to the endothermic phase transformation accelerates slab sinking in the upper mantle and the subducting slab reaches the lower mantle in a shorter time than that of the experiments without the phase transformation. However, the phase transformation from ringwoodite to perovskite plus $magnesiow{\ddot{u}}stite$ at a depth of 660 km retards slab sinking into the lower mantle and the subducting slab tends to be accumulated in the transformation (transition) zone. Buckling analyses show that the scaling laws predict the buckling amplitude and period of the subducting slab with small relative errors even if the phase transformations are considered. The universal phenomenon of the slab buckling can explain apparent slab thickening in the shallow lower mantle and transformation zone under the subduction zones such as Java-Sunda and Northeast Japan. In addition, the buckling behavior of the subducting slab may be related to the periodic compressions and extensions in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang basin.

  • Steel bar is used for as a reinforcing material in a concrete slab track. Bacuase the steel re-bar could provide passes for current transition, all the cross points of steel re-bars should be insulated by using plastic materials. This is due to the loss of signal intensity of track-circuit. In this study, GFRP bars are adopted in place of the traditional steel reinforcing bars for a concrete slab track to minimize the loss of the signal intensity. In order to evaluate the replacing effect on eletrical characteristic of slab track, measurements of surface resistivity are conducted on steel and GFRP reinforced precast slab tracks. In the results, the GFRP reinforced slab strack shows the higher resistivity than the steel reinforced slab track.

  • In North America, a large number of concrete old slab-on-steel girder bridges, classified noncomposite, were built without any mechanic connections. The stablizing effect due to slab/girder interface contact and friction on the steel girders was totally neglected in practice. Experimental results indicate that this effect can lead to a significant underestimation of the load-carrying capacity of these bridges. In this paper, the two major components-concrete slab and steel girders, are treat as two deformable bodies in contact. A finite element procedure with considering the effect of friction and contact for the analysis of concrete slab-on-steel girder bridges is presented. The interface friction phenomenon and finite element formulation are described using an updated configuration under large deformations to account for the influence of any possible kinematic motions on the interface boundary conditions. The constitutive model for frictional contact are considered as slip work-dependent to account for the irreversible nature of friction forces and degradation of interface shear resistance. The proposed procedure is further validated by experimental bridge models.

  • The concrete slab on the foundation may have curling and warping deformations due to moisture and temperature gradient of its section. These deformations may change the support conditions of concrete slabs, and cause higher level of stresses than expected. This study was performed to verify the effect of partial support condition of concrete slab on the foundation due to its deformations and to develop the useful analytic method for describing these phenomenons. The partial support condition verified by FWD test results, and it was concluded that the gap model could be useful in analysing the concrete slab with partial support conditions.

  • In this paper, a numerical method for evaluating the efficiency of vibration reduction of substructure under slab track is developed for optimal design of floating slab track. The equation of motion for train and track interaction system is derived by applying compatibility condition at the contact points between wheels and rails. The train is modelled by 3-masses system and the track by continuous support beam system. Numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the effect of train speed, stiffness and damping of slab-pad, and track irregularity upon vibration reduction in substructure under the track.

  • Flat plate system has structural weakness such as punching shear. Punching shear resistance can be increase by using a lager column section and effective depth, higer concrete compressive strength, and more flexural reinforcement ratio. But using a shear reinforcement is most economical, enable, workable solution in flat plate. The slab with thickness smaller than 250mm can not perform effectively due to insufficient development length of shear reinforcement in the slab. In case of proposed reinforcements, since the shear reinforcements were installed between the top bar and the bottom bar, shear elements generated slip failure before they reached yield. strength. effect of anchorage strength were effective anchorage length, concrete strength, diameter of shear element and anchorage detail. considering effect of slab thickness and concrete strength, formula of K factor propose in thin flat plate slab. by considering effect of anchorage length and concrete strength, strength of shear reinforcement will be computed correctly in thin flat plate slab.

  • Shear lag effect was a significant mechanical behavior of steel-concrete composite beams, and the effective flange width was needed to consider this effect. However, the effective flange width is mostly determined by static load test. The cyclic vehicle loading cases, which is more practical, was not well considered. This paper focuses on the study of shear lag effect of the concrete slab in the negative moment region under fatigue cyclic load. Two specimens of two-span steel-concrete composite beams were tested under fatigue load and static load respectively to compare the differences in the negative moment region. The reinforcement strain in the negative moment region was measured and the stress was also analyzed under different loads. Based on the OpenSees framework, finite element analysis model of steel-concrete composite beam is established, which is used to simulate transverse reinforcement stress distribution as well as the variation trends under fatigue cycles. With the established model, effects of fatigue stress amplitude, flange width to span ratio, concrete slab thickness and shear connector stiffness on the shear lag effect of concrete slab in negative moment area are analyzed, and the effective flange width ratio of concrete slab under different working conditions is calculated. The simulated results of effective flange width are compared with calculated results of the commonly used specifications, and it is found that the methods in the specifications can better estimate the shear lag effect in concrete slab under static load, but the effective flange width in the negative moment zone under fatigue load has a large deviation.

  • CA mortar layer disengagement will give rise to the overall structural changes of the track and variation in the vibration form of the ballastless track. By establishing a vehicle-track-viaduct coupling analysis and calculation model, it is possible to analyze the CRTS-I type track structure vibration response while the track slab is disengaging with the power flow evaluation method, to compare the two disengaging types, namely partial contact loss at one edge beneath track slab and partial contact loss at midpoint beneath track slab. It can also study how the length of disengaging influences the track structures vibration power. It is showed that when the partial contact loss beneath track slab, and the relative vibration energy level between the rail and the track slab increases significantly within [10, 200]Hz with the same disengaging length, the partial contact loss at one edge beneath track slab has more prominent influence on the vibration power than the partial contact loss at midpoint beneath track slab. With the increase of disengaging length, the relative vibration energy level of the track slab grows sharply, but it will change significantly when it reaches 1.56 m. Little effect will be caused by the relative vibration energy level of the viaduct. The partial contact loss beneath the track slab will cause more power distribution and transmission between the trail and track slab, and will then affect the service life of the rail and track slab.
