This study aims at compensation of the skin moisture level using skin impedance and SR factor. SR factor is related with the current diffusion into the skin layer. To efficiently analyze the current diffusion on the skin model, we used an electromagnetic simulation program called Ansys 10.0 Emag. We confirmed that the measured value decreases as the electric current gets more diffused to the layer below the horny layer. In order to conduct actual experiments based on the simulated result, we manufactured special electrodes with 24 pins by arranging 0.8mm-diameter electrodes every 0.5mm, in a $3{\times}8$ array. By simultaneously achieving both impedance value and SR value of skin with the manufactured electrodes, we compared the skin moisture level using the existing equipment to the skin moisture level applied using the skin impedance as well as the SR factor developed in this study. The correlation coefficient between the skin moisture level achieved from the existing equipment and the reference value was 0.615 (p<0.01), whereas the correlation coefficient between the skin moisture achieved from the regression equation in this study was 0.677 (p<0.01). Accordingly, it was confirmed that applying SR factor additionally improves the moisture level more precisely.

This study was undertaken to find out how much influence eating habits and food preferences have on basic skin types, namely dry skin, normal skin, oily skin, and combination skin, as well as troubled skin, such as acne skin, sensitive skin, pigment disorder skin and unbalanced oil and moisture skin. The aim of this study was to help establish good eating habits and to reform food preferences in order to maintain healthy skin. For this study, a suey on the eating habits and food preferences of 206 college women in the metropolitan area was conducted. Statistics Program SPSS (ver130.0) was used to analyze the results of the material obtained from the survey. The survey revealed that participants with basic skin types ate a variety of foods, enjoy soft drinks, juice and supplementary food, while those with troubled skin types had daily breakfast and substitute snacks for meals. The survey also showed that alcohol is the dangerous factor for the cause of both sensitive skin and pigment disorder skin. And it showed that various nutrition intake is the main factor for unbalanced oil and moisture skin.
As an indicator of skin health, acidified skin surface pH ranging from 5 to 7 is crucial for maintaining skin barrier. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between skin pH and dietary pattern (DP) as well as nutrient or food intake in 48 healthy middle aged adults. Skin pH was measured in the skin surface of the inner arm, and blood lipid profile was analyzed. Dietary intake data were obtained using 1 day 24 hour recall method, and DP was extracted using factor analysis. Results revealed that skin pH ranged from 5.15 to 6.88 in all subjects. There was no significant difference in skin pH between males and females. When subjects were grouped by tertile of skin pH, the food intake of fruit, and the nutrient intake of omega 6 fatty acid, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, ${\beta}$-carotene, and riboflavin in the first tertile group with skin pH ranging from 5.15 to 5.68 were significantly higher than in the third tertile group with skin pH ranging from 6.26 to 6.88. There was no difference in blood lipid profile between the first and the third tertile group. Among 5 DP extracted by factor analysis, DP5 characterized by a high intake of nuts and fruits as well as a low intake of beverages and alcohol was inversely correlated with skin pH after adjusting for gender and age. DP5 was positively correlated with nutrient intake of carbohydrate, fiber, potassium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, ${\beta}$-carotene, thiamine, and riboflavin but negatively correlated with sodium after adjusting for gender, age, smoking, and energy intake. Therefore, acidified skin pH could be maintained by these DP and nutrients.
Besides using for hair removal, depilatory agents have been considered to be used as a penetration enhancer for transepidermal drug delivery. To examine the effect in hair follicles (HFs), two commercially available depilatory creams were tested on the dorsal skin of mice to monitor the effect deep into the skin structure. Fifteen male BALB/c mice were used in this study. Depilatory creams were applied to the dorsal skin of the same animal using shaved and untouched treatments as controls to minimize individual differences. Skin samples were collected at three days, one week and two weeks (n = 5 for each) after the treatment, and subjected for hematoxylin-eosin staining, and immunohistochemical analysis for proinflammatory cytokines. The morphological examination showed an increase in the thickness of epidermal layer of the depilatory cream-treated skin at early time points and in the subcutis at two weeks. Depilatory cream promoted entry of anagen phase and increased the number of hair follicles in the subcutis at one and two weeks. Immunohistochemistry showed elevated percentages of dermal fibroblasts expressing interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and tumor necrosis factor-β. Shaving process increased the thickness of epidermis and dermis as depilatory creams did, but did neither induce the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the dermal fibroblasts nor the number of HFs. The results suggested that the commercially available depilatory creams caused a transient minor inflammatory response of the skin and increased the levels of cytokines that might subsequently affect hair growth.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between women's face satisfaction and makeup satisfaction, to disclose the differences of makeup satisfaction according to demographic variables, and to examine how makeup satisfaction was influenced by face satisfaction and demographic variables. The subjects were 200 women over age 17 living in Seoul and its peripheral areas. The results of this study were as follows: Face satisfaction were drawn three factors. Factor 1 was face contour satisfaction, Factor 2 was skin satisfaction, and Factor 3 was lips and eyes satisfaction. There were significant positive relationship between factors of face satisfaction and makeup satisfaction. Also, the face contour satisfaction was in positive correlation with satisfaction of features, and the skin satisfaction was in positive correlation with that of features. There were significant positive correlations between makeup satisfaction and face shape, eyes, nose, lips, chin, and cheek bone satisfaction. Face satisfaction didn't show significant difference according to demographic variables, but makeup satisfaction showed significant difference according to age and occupation. Face satisfaction was influenced by the facial face, clarity of skin, elasticity of skin, skin color, and ages. The explanatory power of the 4 variables were 24.5%. Makeup satisfaction was influenced by lips and eyes satisfaction, ages, and skin care level. The explanatory power of the 3 variables were 13.3%.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sunlight, especially UVA and UVB, is the primary environmental cause of skin damage, including topical inflammation, premature skin aging, and skin cancer. Previous reports show that activation of nuclear $factor-{\kappa}B$ ($NF-{\kappa}B$) in human skin fibroblasts and keratinocytes after UV exposure induces the expression and release of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$), and subsequently leads to the production of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) and growth factor basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Here, we demonstrated that TNFR2-SKEE and TNFR2-SKE, oligopeptides from TNF receptor-associated factor 2 (TRAF2)-binding site of TNF receptor 2 (TNFR2), strongly inhibited the interaction of TNFR1 as well as TNFR2 with TRAF2. In particular, TNFR2-SKE suppressed UVB- or $TNF-{\alpha}$-induced nuclear translocalization of activated $NF-{\kappa}B$ in mouse fibroblasts. It decreased the expression of bFGF, MMPs, and COX2, which were upregulated by $TNF-{\alpha}$, and increased procollagen production, which was reduced by $TNF-{\alpha}$. Furthermore, TNFR2-SKE inhibited the UVB-induced proliferation of keratinocytes and melanocytes in the mouse skin and the infiltration of immune cells into inflamed tissues. These results suggest that TNFR2-SKE may possess the clinical potency to alleviate UV-induced photoaging in human skin.

Water chestnut (Trapa japonica Flerov.) is an annual aquatic plant. In the present study, we showed that the treatment of water chestnut extracted with boiling water resulted in a significant increase 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity and decrease the intracellular $H_2O_2$-induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species. In addition, water chestnut extract (WCE) inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide production and suppressed mRNA and protein expression of the inducible nitric oxide synthase gene. The cytokine array results showed that WCE inhibited inflammatory cytokine secretion. Also, WCE reduced tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$- and interleukin-6-induced nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ activity. Furthermore, during sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)-induced irritation of human skin, WCE reduced SLS-induced skin erythema and improved barrier regeneration. These results indicate that WCE may be a promising topical anti-inflammatory agent.
LBD-005, a newly developed recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, was tested for primary skin irritation in male New Zealand White rabbits. In the primary skin irritation test, LBD-005 was applied to intact and abraded skins for 24 hours. Primary irritation index was "0" in test and control sites of all animals' thus LBD-005 was evaluated as a non-irritatant on the basis of the criteria of Draize et al. (1994).l. (1994).
The present study was conducted to determine whether skin spread of Myrrha has an effect on the cell regeneration as well as wound healing following dermal scald burn injury, keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) level was analyzed immunologically in conjunction with the histological changes occurred in skin tissue. The KGF contents in Myrrha skin spread group, which shows cell regeneration ability in skin tissue after burn, increased after 5 hours. After 24 hours, 'the content of Myrrha skin spread group is noticeably higher than at 5 hours postburn. After 72 hours, KGF was decreased compared to at 24 hours postburn. Acceleration effect of KGF production in Myrrha skin spread group was high. Together with the result of histological changes, skin spread of Myrrha reduced protein degeneration and edema in dermis, and induced proliferation of epithelial cells. The data suggest that Myrrha has accelerate cell regeneration and wound healing in case of scald burn skin by spreading of paste.
