  • FRP has been proposed to replace the steel as a reinforcement in the concrete structures for addressing the corrosion issue. However, FRP-Rebar does not behave in the same manner as steel because the properties of FRP are different. For example, FRP-Rebar has a high tensile strength, low stiffness, and linear elastic behavior which results in a difference bonding mechanism to transfer the load between the reinforcement and the surrounding concrete. Therefore, bonding behavior between FRP-Rebar and concrete has to be investigated using the bonding test. So, Pull-out test has been used to estimate bond behavior because it is simple. However, the results of pull-out test have a difference with flexural-boding behavior of FRP-Rebar concrete member. So, it is needed to evaluate the real fleuxral-bonding behavior. In this study, the evaluation method to flexural-bonding behavior of FRP-Rebar concrete member was reviewed and compared. It was found that the most accurate evaluation method for the fleuxral-bonding behavior of FRP-Rebar concrete member was splice beam test, however, the size and length of specimen have to increase than other test method and the design and analysis of splice beam is complex. Meanwhile, characteristics of concrete could be reflected by using arched beam test, unlike hinged beam test which is based on the ignored change of moment arm length in equilibrium equation. However, the possibility of shear failure exists before the flexural-bonding failure occur.

  • Linear cutting test is known to be very effective to determine machine parameters (i.e. thrust force and torque) and to estimate penetration rate of TBM and other operation conditions. Although the linear cutting test has significant advantages, the test is expensive and time-consuming because it requires large size specimen and high load capacity of the testing machine. Therefore, a few empirical prediction models (e.g. CSM, NTNU and QTBM) alternatively adopt laboratory index tests to estimate design parameters of TBM. This study discusses the estimation method of TBM machine parameters and disc cutter consumption using punch penetration test and Cerchar abrasion test of which the researches are rare. The cutter forces and cutter consumption can be estimated by the empirical models derived from the relationship between laboratory test result with field data and linear cutting test data. In addition, the estimation process was programmed through which the design parameters of TBM (e.g. thrust, torque, penetration rate, and cutter consumption) are automatically estimated using laboratory test results.

  • The water in surface of the earth is frozen under freezing point. The freezing phenomenon, which causes the volume change of soils, affects on the behavior of soils and causes the significant damage on the geotechnical structures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of elastic waves in sand-silt mixtures using small size freezing cells, which reflect the frozen ground condition due to temperature change. Experiments are carried out in a nylon cell designed to freeze soils from top to bottom. Bender elements and piezo disk elements are used as the shear and compressional wave transducers. Three pairs of bender elements and piezo disk elements are placed on three locations along the depth. The specimen, which is prepared by mixing sand and silt, is frozen in the refrigerator. The temperature of soils changes from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$. The velocities, resonant frequencies and amplitudes of the shear and compressional waves are continuously measured. Experimental results show that the shear and compressional wave velocities and resonant frequencies increase dramatically near the freezing points. The amplitudes of shear and compressional waves show the different tendency. The dominant factors that affect on the shear wave velocity change from the effective stress to the ice bonding due to freezing. This study provides basic information about the characteristics of elastic waves due to the soil freezing.

  • In this study, the heat input conditions suitable for the AZ61 magnesium alloy were derived by controlling the welding speed at a constant rotational speed. In addition, from an economic point of view, industry demands higher welding speeds. Therefore, the effects of the welding speed were studied. The rotational speed applied was 800rpm, and the welding speed was varied from 100 to 500mm/min to evaluate the behavior of the welded regions. Tensile and hardness tests were conducted to examine the mechanical properties. Optical microscopy was used to observe the microstructure and soundness of the welded regions. Defects were observed at the welded region when the welding speed was more than400mm/min. As the welding speed increased, the grain size of the stir zone decreased and the hardness tended to increase proportionally. When the rotational speed was 800 rpm and the welding speed was 200mm/min and 300mm/min, there wereno defects in the welded region and excellent mechanical properties were recorded. In addition, the joint efficiencies were 100.5% and 101.2%, respectively, and the ultimate tensile strength was similar to that of the base metal. Fracture of the tensile specimen occurred between the advancing side and stir zone, and the fracture location coincided with the region where the hardness decreased temporarily.

  • This research is described on the applicability of a electrochemical techniques for evaluating nondestructive material degradation with various polarization characteristics for Cr-Mo-V steel. The applied electrochemical technique is anodic polarization test which are widely used to evaluate the corrosion rate and/or sensitization at depleted zone of strengthening elements mainly caused by thermal experience for stainless steels. The evaluation of material degradation is performed by small punch test which has been well known as micromechanics test method using specimen size of $10{\times}10{\times}0.5mm$. The 1,000hrs aged material at $630^{\circ}C$ shows the highest material degradation$({\Delta}[DBTT]_{SP})$, but the 2,000hrs and 3,000hrs aged materials show the decrease of ${\Delta}[DBTT]_{SP}$ as aging time increases. It is observed that the difference of current density $({\Delta}I_{FP}\;and\;{\Delta}I_{SP})$.

  • The recycled aggregate for construction, slag, coal ash and such may elute leachates by chemical reaction when in touch with water, and to confirm this, generally the waste process test is executed. If the test result criteria are met, it can be used as replacement aggregate. In case of steel slag, however, the chemical reaction does not end in a short term, but occurs over a long time, generating eluted leachate. Thus, in this study, the leachate from steel slag were analyzed for heavy metal, and the pH change and environmental characteristics of eluted leachate were analyzed. According to the experiment result, the chemical reaction of free CaO and water within the steel slag occurred more actively when stirred, and the smaller the grain size, the higher the pH was. As the result of waste process test, all test items for the two types of specimen were found to have no heavy metal, but from the ICP test analysis result, heavy metals such as Al, Pb, Zn, Fe were detected. It could be confirmed that chemical reaction would occur upon contact of steel slag and water, and heavy metal may be detected depending on experiment conditions and analysis methods, the long-term environmental characteristics should be examined for utilization of steel slag.

  • Mn-doped Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-PbTiO3 (Mn:PIN-PMN-PT) single crystals, which exhibit improved phase transition temperatures and coercive field properties compared to Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) single crystals, are expected to be utilized in high-power acoustic transducers. Bridgeman method, growing single crystals along the axial direction from melt, is most widely used method for single crystal growth with large size and high quality. However, single crystal boules grown by the Bridgeman method demonstrate a PT compositional variation, giving rise a distribution of crystal structure and material properties along the growing axis. To employ piezoelectric single crystals grown by the Bridgeman method for acoustic transducers, it is essential to investigate their overall property distribution. In this study, the compositional distribution and property variation of Mn:PIN-PMN-PT single crystals grown by the Bridgeman method was investigated. Measured compositional distribution of PT was from 29% to 32.5% in the Rhombohedral crystal region of the boule. Two types of specimen, [011]-poled Mn:PIN-PMN-29PT and Mn:PIN-PMN-32PT single crystals, were fabricated and tested to obtain full property variation at both ends of the Rhombohedral crystal region. The properties related to the 32 directional vibration mode and the properties related to high-power driving were measured to confirm the overall distribution of properties by composition.

  • In this study, it was developed eco-friendly alkali-activated slag fiber reinforced concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag, alkali activator (water glass, sodium hydroxides), and steel fiber. Eight reinforced concrete beam using alkali-activated slag concrete were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. The major variables were mixture ratio of alkali activator, mixed/without of steel fiber. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the flexural performance of such test specimens, such as the load-displacement, the failure mode, the maximum load carrying capacity, and ductility capacity. All the specimens were modeled in scale-down size. The reinforced concrete beams using the eco-friendly alkali-activated slag fiber reinforced concrete was failed by the flexure or flexure-shear in general. In addition, the maximum strength increased with the adding the mol of sodium hydroxide, and the specimen reinforced the steel fiber showed the value of maximum strength which is increased by 15.8% through 25.9%. It is thought that eco-friendly alkali-activated slag fiber reinforced concrete can be used with construction material and product to replace normal concrete. If there is applied to structures such as precast concrete member and production of 2nd concrete product, it could be improved the productivity and reduction of construction duration etc.

  • Power generating unit structures are designed and built to meet standard to secure its safety for expected life time. As the structures have been exposed to combined environment, degradation of structure material is accelerated and it can cause unexpected damage; evaluating precise mechanical properties of weak site like welded area is an essential research area as it is directly connected to safety issues. Existing measuring technique like tensile test requires specific size in testing specimen yet it is destructive method which is hard to apply on running structures. To overcome above mentioned limitation, IIT is getting limelight as it is non-destructive and simple method. In this study, latest technique is introduced to evaluate tensile property and residual stress by analyzing stress field occurs under the indenter while IIT is performed. Test on welded area, the weak site of nuclear structures have been practiced and confirmed that IIT can be usefully applied to evaluate integrity in industry.
