In this study, the effects of driver's neuroticism on situation awareness(SA), eye movement(EM), and driving performance were examined. In Experiment 1, in which static driving scenes were presented, it was found that the drivers of higher neuroticism showed shorter percentage of dwell time and less percentage of fixation counts for the peripheral area than those of lower neuroticism, although SA scores yielded no difference between the two neuroticism groups. In Experiment 2, differences in the drivers' driving performances as well as SA and EM as a function of neuroticism were compared using driving simulation. The results of Experiment 2 showed the followings. First, contrasting to Experiment 1, the high neuroticism group showed lower SA score than low neuroticism group. Second, the pattern of EM was similar to those of Experiment 1. Third, high neuroticism group deviated more from center of road, and drove slower than low neuroticism group.
Previous research has mainly investigated the characteristics of expertise by using typical and routine tasks. This research to overcome these limitations included non-routine task situations and observed expert and novice pilots' situation awareness (SA) performance in routine and non-routine situations. Additionally, whether the ability to aware or perceive the environmental information in limited time varies with the level of expertise was tested. To this end, $2^*2^*2$ mixed factorial design was employed, including expertise (novice/expert) as a between-subjects variable and normality of fight situation (routine/non-routine) and stimulus display time (long/short) as within-subjects variables. As results, there was no performance difference in routine situations between experts and novices, while experts significantly outperformed novices in non-routine situations. When the display time became shorter, overall SA accuracy was decreased for both experts and novices, whereas experts' performance remained significantly higher than novices in short and long conditions. When we examined the interaction between the normality of fight situation and stimulus display time, there was no difference between experts and novices in routine situations for both short and long conditions. In non-routine situations, however, experts' SA accuracy was significantly higher than novices both in short and long conditions. Overall, non-routineness of flight situation does not have any impact on SA performance of experts, while it has a critical impact on SA performance of novices.

Environments in nuclear power plants (NPPs) are changing as the design of instrumentation and control systems for NPPs is rapidly moving toward fully digital instrumentation and control, and modern computer techniques are gradually introduced into main control rooms (MCRs). Within the context of these environmental changes, the level of performance of operators in a digital MCR is a major concern. Situation awareness (SA), which is used within human factors research to explain to what extent operators of safety-critical systems know what is transpiring in the system and the environment, is considered a prerequisite factor to guarantee the safe operation of NPPs. However, the safe operation of NPPs can be guaranteed through a team effort. In this regard, the operating team's SA in a conventional and digital MCR should be measured in order to assess whether the new design features implemented in a digital MCR affect this parameter. This paper explains the team SA measurement method used in this study and the results of applying this measurement method to operating teams in different MCR environments. The paper also discusses several empirical lessons learned from the results.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of mariner's situation awareness(SA) training on navigation performance using a full mission ship-handling simulator. For this purpose, the mariners were trained in terms of various aspects of SA. Independent variables such as risk levels of ship-to-ship collision, navigational route types of 'target ship(TS)', and number of ships around the own ship(OS) were systematically varied, and dependent variables of closest point of approach(CPA) between TS and OS, number of collision, types of collision-avoidance strategy were measured The results can be summarized as followings. First, training on mariner's SA appeared to induce improved performances in various aspects of ship handling. Second, mariners in the routine navigation situation where TS had priority following maritime rules seemed to suffer to prepare collision avoidance when the TS altered its route. However, this tendency greatly reduced after the training These results suggest the benefit of mariner's SA training on maritime safety.

The role of S/W in weapon systems has been developed with various functions and complex structures. As the weapon system S/W is directly related to quick and accurate decision making of users, more accurate evaluation is required during the training. However, situation awareness of weapon system S/W users has only been assessed qualitatively such as by simple test or qualitative judgement. Therefore, this study suggests the 'Cognition Ratio' concept which represents the quantitative of users by combining ACT-R cognitive architecture to SA (Situation Awareness) and Fitts' Law based on the theory of cognitive engineering. The cognition ratio is a ratio of cognition among the whole cognitive behavior process including perception and psychomotor. Moreover, this study provides a systematic assessment process of situation awareness that will be applicable to various weapon system S/W for effective assessment.
This driving simulation study examined the effect of driver's state driving anger(SDA) on collision avoidance(CA) and situation awareness(SA), as well as the moderating effect of driver's positive and negative affect(PA and NA) on the relationship between the driver's SDA and SA. The results showed the followings. First, high SDA group collided with the leading vehicle more frequently than low SDA group. Second, neither the driver's trait driving anger(TDA) nor PA/NA yielded significant changes in SA after SDA was induced. Third, high SDA tended to lower SA but this tendency was observed only when the driver's NA was high. These results suggested that SDA than TDA is a significant deteriorating factor of the driver's SA, and more importantly, SDA should be considered with other affect-relating variable such as NA in explaining the effect of SDA on driver's SA and CA.

This study aimed to provide empirical evidence about expert performance approach in aviation field and the results suggested that the amount of experience(e.g. total flight hour) is necessary but not sufficient index of a pilot's expertise or superior performance. 43 pilots participated and completed a spatial span task and SA (situation awareness) tasks. To explore the factors predicting the performance in routine and non-routine situations, discriminant analysis was conducted. The results of discriminant analysis indicated that different variables are related with the performance in routine and non-routine situation. The factors predicting performance in routine situation were the spatial span scores and total flight hours. On the other hand, the factors predicting performance in non-routine situation were age and the qualification for instrument flying. In real world, total flight time which represents the quantity of experience has been frequently used to predict flight abilities and as an important index of expertise. The results of this study suggest that these kinds of factors have to be used cautiously to predict the performance in abnormal situation.

The correct situation awareness (SA) of operators is important for managing nuclear power plants (NPPs), particularly in accident-related situations. Among the three levels of SA suggested by Ensley, Level 3 SA (i.e., projection of the future status of the situation) is challenging because of the complexity of NPPs as well as the uncertainty of accidents. Hence, several prediction methods using artificial intelligence techniques have been proposed to assist operators in accident prediction. However, these methods only predict short-term plant status (e.g., the status after a few minutes) and do not provide information regarding the uncertainty associated with the prediction. This paper proposes an algorithm that can predict the multivariate and long-term behavior of plant parameters for 2 h with 120 steps and provide the uncertainty of the prediction. The algorithm applies bidirectional long short-term memory and an attention mechanism, which enable the algorithm to predict the precise long-term trends of the parameters with high prediction accuracy. A conditional variational autoencoder was used to provide uncertainty information about the network prediction. The algorithm was trained, optimized, and validated using a compact nuclear simulator for a Westinghouse 900 MWe NPP.

Situation awareness means recognizing everything necessary to understand progress in a flight or aircraft maintenance work. Situation awareness is based on more than simply recognizing important about the environment, and it is important to provide the meaning of information in an integrated form. The KHP provides the pilot with integrated situation display for an integrated form of situation awareness and warning that synchronizes the priority based audible signal with the visual signal. Provide integrated display and warning to reduce operator error and enable operators to focus on mission critical tasks and events. This paper introduces the integrated situation display and warning design implemented in the KHP.
