The purpose of this study was to survey the status of the operation of site-based environmental education(EE) programs. This study surveyed 165 schools and organizations that operated site-based EE program in 2000 using a mail questionnaire and interviews. The response rate was 43%. The result indicated that awareness, participation, and attitude were considerably addressed, while knowledge and skills were addressed to a lesser degree. There were some difficulties in motivating students and in considering the developmental stage of participants. For programing the site-based EE, financial support and expert knowledge of EE were needed most of all. Learning materials for various and hand-on activities were also needed. The affective domain, such as awareness and attitude, showed marked improvement in the outcomes of the programs. Direct experience and sensitivity, connection with school education, regional characteristics were sufficiently addressed in the programs, while cultural aspects, fairness, originality, and accuracy were not. Flexibility in performing the programs and less rigidity of report on operations were needed. Through the discussion of the results, some improvements for the operation of site-based EE program were suggested.
This article describes the current status of site-based environmental education (EE) in the Republic of Korea. Implications for site-based EE program development and operation are presented and recommendations for an improvement are provided. Questionnaires were mailed to 205 schools and organizations where site-based EE programs operated in 2002 with funding from the Korean Ministry of Environment. The questionnaire was designed and used to examine the scope, operation, and needs of site-based EE programs. The response rate was 27.3%. The results of the survey indicated that 'awareness', 'participation', and 'attitude' were addressed by the program goals and objectives more than 'knowledge' and 'skills'. The survey also indicated that activities in the programs were not variable and most were teacher/instructor-centered. Most of the programs reflected the 'connection with everyday life, direct experience and sensitivity'. There were some difficulties in motivating students and finding a good location and qualified instructional staff. Needs included well-designed program development and dissemination, professional development, increased funding support, and more effective program evaluation.
The purposes of this study are to revise an site-based environmental education(EE) Program evaluation chart and to evaluate site-based EE programs using the chart. For revising the evaluation chart, several elements in the former chart were changed, infused, deleted, integrated, or split. The points of some elements in the former chart were also changed. The revised chart consist of 38 elements in 6 areas: purpose and goal, teaching and learning plan, teaching and learning process, educational effect and programs evaluation, Program characteristic, and program operation. Using the revised chart, the researchers evaluated 159 site-based EE programs, funded by the Korean Ministry of Environment in 2002. The result indicated that the mark of 'teaching and learning plan' area is higher than other areas, while the mark of 'educational effect and programs evaluation' is the lowest. On the basis of evaluation, the researchers offered some recommendations for the Korean site-based EE programs.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate site-based environmental education(EE) programs. For the evaluation, an evaluation chart was developed. The chart was consisted of twenty evaluation items in the following six categories : 'goals & objectives', 'instructional planning', 'instruction', 'learning outcomes & evaluation', 'features of program', and 'program operation'. One hundred sixty five site-based EE programs, funded by the Korean Ministry of Environment in 2000, were evaluated. After the evaluation, the programs were also categorized and analyzed according to regions, organizations, and amount of funds. The results indicated that awareness, participation, and attitude were addressed in the purpose of the programs, while knowledge and skills were not. The diversity of activities and teaching strategies of the programs were insufficient. Cultural aspects, fairness, originality, and accuracy were also insufficiently addressed. Assessment and evaluation of such programs were needed to be considered to a larger degree. From the analysis of programs according to categories, Choongbuk province in the regional aspect and schools in the organizational aspect got higher scores than others. Overall, the more funding the program received, the higher score it got in evaluation. Some improvements and strategies for activating site-based EE were recommended based on the result of the evaluation.
This study examined the current status of school environmental education (EE) in Germany, and attempted to propose strategies to develop school EE in Korea. The study intended to accomplish the following goals: First, this study attempted to examine the developmental process of school EE in Germany. Second, exemplary cases of site-based experiential education in Germany are selected and analysed to develop pedagogical strategies in school EE in Korea. The strategies for development proposed in this study can be summarized as follows: First, the focus of EE should go beyond that of "solving or curing"environmental problems and pollutions, and need to be re-directed to pursue an "education for sustainable development", a new paradigm for future EE. Second, EE should increasingly integrate outdoor site-based, experiential programs into the currently classroom-based and knowledge-driven forms of education, not only to maximize its educational effect but also and knowledge-driven forms of education, not only to maximize its educational effect but also to coordinate the instruction of EE in the context of the educational reform agenda, currently undergoing since the late 1990s, in Korea. Third, teaching-learning materials for EE should be variously developed, and programs should be encouraged to serve local needs and circumstances for effective classroom practices, and criteria for standardization and professionalization should be sought in developing these programs. Fourth, it is recommended that the Ministry of Environment secure funds to facilitate the local school authorities at the municipal and provincial levels to operate a mobile environmental support system, equivalent to the function of the "Lumbricus"in Germany. Fifth, an external support network should be established among the support agencies for EE. Especially, a professional agency or institute to academically support school EE and a special planning committee for enhancing EE need to be established for resource and personal development. Parents′voluntary participation should also be encouraged to establish a tripartite network of "school-community-government" to support and facilitate school EE.
Ecopark enables sustainable use of natural resource and can be used as a place for site-based environmental education as well as for recreation. This study investigated the opinion for the development of ecopark and ecological education program of ecopark. Nine hundred and fifteen (918) students, 388 teachers, 341 adults, 200 administrators of district education offices, and 40 administrators of environmental offices participated in this survey with a response rate of 89.7%. Results of this survey indicated the followings are needed to develop ecopark : natural resources and facilities, ecological educational program and its operation, human resource and professional development, and cooperation system with educational and environmental offices. On the basis of these results, the way of improvement was discussed and proposed.
The survey of user's satisfactory degree of location, plantings, facilities, operation, and management factors on national parks' camp sites was carried out. Many problems were analyzed and identified. This survey was for proposing the correct way to plan and draft for camping site after this. In addition to, the realization of environmental education through nature friendly recreation was aimed at. According to the result of the survey, the followings were suggested as necessities to improve the camp site. 1. Repair and replacement of insufficiently managed facilities should be aimed at. 2. Facilities for a handicapped person should be preferentially introduced. 3. Active management and publicity in low-demand season that practiced by developed countries should be carried out. Seasonal program for various age groups should be operated. 4. Surrounding tourist site, camp site, and trail should be organically connected by shuttle bus and other transports. A survey was carried out for the user satisfaction in the campsites of national parks. Based on this survey concerned with the location, planting, facilities, operation and management, the problems were identified and analysed to improve future design and plan of the campsites. This study aims for the realization of environmental education through nature friendly recreation. The following points are suggested as needed according to the survey result. 1. damaged facilities should be repaired or replaced. 2. introduction of the facilities for disabled should be prioritized. 3. consistent and active management and publicity work should be operated in the off-peak season. and the seasonal activity programs for the various age groups should be provided. 4. the site should be well connected with other surrounding campsites and tourist sites using the shuttle bus and other transport method.
Construction industry has a relatively higher industrial accident rate than other domestic industries. Thus, to reduce the accident rate, researches on the methodology of worker's safety education combined with new technologies like IT technology have increased. In the light of workers' safety information provision, this study develops a VR(Virtual Reality)-based construction site using the BIM(Building Information Modeling) data. The target structures and geographical features are included in the VR-based construction site where the construction machinery model and worker model are also created using a game engine. For highly effective provision of safety information, video clips with suitable captions corresponding to working processes were made with proper screen directing. They should be appropriately connected to correct worker's operations to improve the work commitment level, sense of reality and inducement of interest. From this scenario, the 3D VR-based construction site, which can be experienced through a VR equipment, was created and in the same platform, the safety information was provided by the video clip combined with the suitable captions. Although the real construction site involves various requirements depending on field situation and the expertness and experience of workers are not consistent, the developed safety information provision based on the VR construction site is expected to effectively reduce the incomplete factors leading to construction accidents by improving the worker's perception of workplace safety.
In this paper, we present, based on a systematic job analysis, the definition, flowchart and description of Ship Building & Ocean Engineering Technician's job in Ship Building & Ocean Engineering Industry for developing an Ship Building & Ocean Engineering education and training program in the context of Korea situation. In addition, it is suggested that the courses be directed toward job site-centered reform through conducting job analysis with experts in the environmental industry. serving new courses demanded by industries in practice and providing training programs for industries.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the symptoms, diseases and deaths of residents living near the municipal solid waste landfill site, and to compare the relative risk ratio of their adverse health effects with control group. In self-evaluation, the scores were especially severe lowest in residents of v2 and v3 villages(which were located about 500 m toward under the landfill site) such as 32.2 and 16.7 for village-environment, 24.8 and 16.0 for management of landfill site, and 23.5 and 16.5 for confidence of environmental policy, respectively. On symptoms, relative risk ratios were also highest as 3.53 and 3.55 for breathing difficulty, and 3.36 and 3.00 for respiratory symptom in v2 and v3 villages, respectively. On morbidity, they were slightly high as much as 1.39 and 1.24 in v5 and v2 villages, respectively. On mortality, relative risk ratios were $1.15{\sim}2.46$ in experimental villages. They were especially high as much as 2.46 in v3 village where located near under the landfill site, and also 2.14 in v5 village where located at area affected with the landfill site, but near the sea. The rate of cancer causing death was average 35.2% of total deaths. It was very highest as much as 61.1 % in v2 village, where was closely located near under the landfill site. Cancers causing death in this village were lung cancer(3 cases), larynx cancer(2 cases), stomach cancer(2 cases), pancreatic cancer(1 case), thryoid cancer(1 case), leukemia(1 case) and other(1 case). Our data, although based on limited number of cases and geographical coverage, suggest that residents living near landfill site have the increasing relative risks of various symptoms and mortality causing cancer. No causal mechanisms are available to explain these findings. But the possibility of a causal association between the increased adverse health effects and the municipal solid waste landfill site cannot be fully excluded.
