It has been studied the flow near a rotating disk with surface topography. The system Ekman number is assumed very small, i.e., $E[{\equiv}\frac{\nu}{{\Omega}^{\ast}L^{\ast2}}]<<1$ in which $L^{\ast}$ denotes a disk radius, ${\nu}$ kinematic viscosity of the fluid and ${\Omega}^{\ast}$ angular velocity of the basic state. Disk surface has a sinusoidal topographic variation along radial coordinate, i.e., $z={\delta}cos(2{\pi}{\omega}r)$, where ${\delta}$ and ${\omega}$ are, respectively, nondimensional amplitude and wave number of the disk surface. Analytic solutions, being useful over the parametric ranges of ${\delta}{\sim}O$( $E^{1/2}$ ) and ${\omega}{\leq}O$ ( $E^{1/2}$ ), are secured in a series-function form of Fourier-Bessel type. An asymptotic behavior, when $E{\rightarrow}0$, is clarified as : for a disk with surface roughness, in contrast to the case of a flat disk, the azimuthal velocity increases in magnitude, together with the thickening boundary layer. The radial velocity, however, decreases in magnitude as the amplitude of surface waviness increases. Consequently, the overall Ekman pumping at the edge of the boundary layer remains unchanged, maintaining the constant value equal to that of the flat disk.
Flame extinction and the chemistry of stoichiometric methane/air mixture were investigated numerically in the PSR(perfectly stirred reactor). For the study, PSR code was modified to be possible to unsteady calculation, and the sinusoidal fluctuation was subjected to the residence time. In the region of residence time far from the extinction limit, combustion mode was strongly dependent on the frequency. The low frequency excitation provided the quasi-steady behavior on the temperature and the concentrations of related species, but small variation of temperature was observed under high frequency. In the region of residence time near the extinction limit, the mixture subjected above 1 KHz was still reacting even though extinction had to be occurred under quasi-steady concept. The attenuation of extinction limit resulted from that chemical time was comparable to the flow time. The mean mole fractions of both NO and CO were almost same regardless of imposed frequency. However, the average mole fraction of $C_2H_2$ was decreased as increasing frequency, which implies that soot yield might be reduced at the higher frequency of flow excitation. The result provides the basic concept for flame stabilization, and it will be used to design a mild combustor.
Flows in a ramjet inlet is simulated for the study of the rocket-ramjet transition. The flow is unsteady, two-dimensional axisymmetric, compressible and turbulent. Double time marching method is used for the unsteady calculation and HLLC method is used as a higher order MUSCL method. As for turbulent calculation, $\kappa-\omega$ SST model is used for more accurate viscous calculations. Sinusoidal pressure perturbation is given at the exit and the flow fields at the inlet is studied. The cruise condition as well as the ground test condition are considered. The pressure level for the ground test condition is relatively low and the effect of the pressure perturbation at the combustion chamber is small. The normal shock at the cruise condition is very sensitive to the pressure perturbation and can be easily detached from the cowl when the exit pressure is relatively high. The sudden decrease in the mass flux is observed when the inlet flow becomes subcritical, which can make the inlet incapable. The amplitude of travelling pressure waves becomes larger as the downstream pressure increases, and the wavelength becomes shorter as Mach number increases. The phase difference of the travelling perturbed pressure wave in space is 180 degree.
The flow of an incompressible Ellis fluid in an inclined asymmetric channel, driven by peristaltic waves was studied under low Reynolds number and long wavelength assumptions. The wave on each side of the channel are assumed to be an infinite train of sinusoidal waves, both having the same constant wave speed and wavelength however, they vary in wave amplitude, channel half width and phase angle. We derived expressions for the axial and transverse velocities, volume flow rate, pressure rise per unit wavelength and streamlines. The effects of varying the wave amplitudes, the phase angle, the channel width, the angle of inclination of the channel as well as the fluid parameters on the flow were analyzed. Trapping conditions were determined and the presence of reflux highlighted using the streamlines for the necessary channel and fluid conditions. By varying the fluid parameters, changes in the fluid that deviated from the Newtonian case resulted in a reduction in the axial velocity in the neighborhood of the center of the channel and a simultaneous increase in the velocity at the periphery of the channel. A nonlinear relation was observed with the pressure rise and the volume flow rate. This nonlinear relation is more pronounced with an increase in the absolute value of the volume flow rate. For Newtonian fluids a linear relation exists between these two variables. The fluid parameters had little effects on the streamlines. However, variations of the wave amplitudes, volume flow, channel width and phase angle had greater effects on the streamlines and hence the trapped region.
The present study investigates flow dynamics between two dimensional compliant plates under sinusoidal flow conditions in order to understand influence of wall motion, impedance phase angle (time delay between pressure and flow waveforms), and non-Newtonian fluid on wall shear stress using computational fluid dynamics. The results showed that wall motion induced additional terms in the streamwise velocity profile and the pressure gradient. These additional terms due to wall motion reduced the amplitude of wall shear stress and also changed the mean wall shear stress. The trend of the changes was very different depending on the impedance phase angle. As the impedance phase angle was changed to more negative values, the mean wall shear stress decreased while the amplitude of wall shear stress increased. As the phase angle was reduced from 0°to -90°under $\pm$4% wall motion, the mean wall shear stress decreased by 12% and the amplitude of wall shear stress increased by 9%. Therefore, for hypertensive patients who have large negative phase angles, the ratio of amplitude and mean of the wall shear stress is raised resulting in a more vulnerable state to atherosclerosis according to the low and oscillatory shear stress theory. We also found that non-Newtonian characteristics of the blood protect atherosclerosis by decreasing the oscillatory shear index.

A numerical and experimental study has been performed on the flow in a shallow rectangular tank accompanying a vortex shedding. The model is composed of a rectangular tank with a vertical plate with a length half the width of the tank. The tank is subject to a horizontal sinusoidal oscillation. The numerical analysis shows that the pattern of vortex shedding changes considerably when the Reynolds number $R_e$ is varied from 500 to 7500. It is symmetric for $R_e$ <1500 and asymmetric for $R_e$ > 1500. The kinetic energies of the right-hand and left-hand sides of the vertical plate are used to quantify the degree of the asymmetry. Experimental visualization is carried out at $R_e$ = 3876 and 52000. The development of the streamline pattern at $R_e$ = 3876 is in closer agreement with the numerical result at $R_e$ = 1000 than that at $R_e$ =3876. The asymmetric pattern is observed at $R_e$ = 52000.
Three-dimensional characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer around a wavy circular cylinder having sinusoidal variation in cross sectional area along the spanwise direction are numerically investigated using the immersed boundary method. The three different wavelengths of ${\pi}/4$, ${\pi}/3$ and ${\pi}/2$ and at the fixed wavy amplitude of 0.1 have been considered to investigate the effects of waviness on especially the forced convection heat transfer around a wavy cylinder when the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers are 300 and 0.71, respectively. The present computational results for a wavy cylinder are compared with those for a smooth cylinder. The time- and total surface-averaged Nusselt number for a wavy cylinder with is larger than that for a smooth cylinder, whereas that with ${\lambda}={\pi}/4$ and ${\pi}/3$ is smaller than that for a smooth cylinder. However, because the surface area exposed to heat transfer for a wavy cylinder is larger than that for a smooth cylinder, the total heat transfer rate for a wavy cylinder with different wavelengths of ${\lambda}={\pi}/4$, ${\pi}/3$ and ${\pi}/2$ is larger than that for a smooth cylinder.
Phase averaged velocity fields in the near wake region behind a square cylinder have been (successfully) obtained using randomly sampled PIV data sets. The Reynolds number based on the flow velocity and the vertex height was 3,900. To identify the phase information, we examined the magnitude of circulation and the center of peak vorticity. The center of vorticity was estimated from lowpass filtered vorticity contours (LES decomposition) adopting a sub-pixel searching algirithm. Due to the sinusoidal nature of firculation which is closely related to the instantaneous vorticity, the location of peak voticity fits well with a sine curve of the circulation magnitude. Conditionally-averaged velocity fields represent the barman vortex shedding phenomenon very well within 5 degrees phase uncertainty. The oscillating nature of the separated shear layer and the separation bubble at the top surface are clearly observed. With the hot-wire measurements of Strouhal frequency, we found thats the convection velocity changes its magnitude very rapidly from 25 to 75 percent of the free stream velocity along the streamwise direction when the flow passes by the recirculation region.
