  • Compared to axial compressors, an analytical model capable of analyzing the flow in centrifugal compressor lacks because of the difficulty in governing equations for radial duct. Therefore, this paper presents a new model to predict flow field in a centrifugal compressor with a sinusoidal asymmetric tip clearance. To predict the 2 dimensional flow in the inlet and exit of the centrifugal compressor, the two flow fields are connected with compressor characteristic based on Moore-Greitzer model. Contrary to axial compressors, the nonuniformity of impeller exit pressure in centrifugal compressor decreases as flow coefficient decreases. In addition, that is sensitive to the slope of pressure rise by eccentricity. The maximum velocity exists right before the maximum tip clearance.

  • This study presents a combined experimental and numerical effort to investigate experimentally and numerically the Bragg reflection of sinusoidal waves due to trapezoidal submerged porous breakwaters. Numerical predictions of the study are verified by comparing to laboratory measurements. In the numerical model, the flow in porous structures is described by the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the volume of fluid method is employed to track the free surface displacements. Numerical solutions are agree well with laboratory measurements. The reflection coefficients of porous structures are smaller than those of non-porous structures and become stronger in proportion to the increase of number of submerged breakwaters.

  • This study investigates the natural convection of air(Pr=0.7) between two walls having a small- wave- number sinusoidal temperature distributions with a phase difference. The wave number and the phase difference of wall temperatures are k=0.5 and ㄱ/2, respectively. In the conduction-dominated regime at small Rayleigh number, two slightly inclined cells are formed over one wave length. At higher Rayleigh number, however, multicellular convection occurs in thermally unstable region. A spatial symmetry is intermittently broken in the transient period at the Rayleigh number near the critical value. The steady-state flows always satisfy the spatial symmetry. A steep increase of Nusselt number occurs near the Rayleigh number at which transition of flow pattern occurs.

  • This paper presents a three-phase Line-Interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system with series-parallel active power-line conditioning capabilities, using synchronous reference frame (SRF) based controller, which allows an effective power factor correction, source harmonic voltage compensation, load harmonic current suppression, and output voltage regulation. The three-phase UPS system consists of two active power compensator topologies. One is a series active compensator, which works as a voltage source in phase with the source voltage to have the sinusoidal source current and high power factor under the deviation and distortion of the source voltage. The other is a parallel active compensator which works as a conventional sinusoidal voltage source in phase with the source voltage, providing to the load a regulated and sinusoidal voltage with low THD (total harmonic distortion). The control algorithm using SRF method and the active power flow through the Line-interactive UPS systems are described and studied. The simulation and experimental results are depicted in this paper to show the effect of the proposed algorithm.

  • A simultaneous measurement system that can analyze the flow-structure interactions(FSI) has been constructed and analyses on the flow field and the motion field of a floating cylinder was made. The three-dimensional vector fields around the cylinder are measured by 3D-PTV technique while the motion of the cylinder forced by the flow field is measured simultaneously with a newly developed motion tracking algorithm(bidirectional tracking algorithm). The cylinder is pendant in the working fluid of a water channel and the surface of the working fluid is forced sinusoidal to make the cylinder bounced. The interaction between the flow fields and the cylinder motion is examined quantitatively.

  • A computational study is performed to better understand the choke phenomenon of unsteady gas flow through a critical nozzle. The axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method. In order to simulate the effects of back pressure fluctuations on the critical nozzle flow, a forced sinusoidal pressure wave is assumed downstream the exit of the critical nozzle. It's frequency is 20kHz and amplitude is varied below 15% of time-mean back pressure. The results obtained show that for low Reynolds numbers, the unsteady effects of the pressure fluctuations can propagate upstream of the throat of critical nozzle, and thereby giving rise to applicable fluctuations of mass flow through the critical nozzle. The effect of the amplitude of the excited pressure fluctuations on the choke phenomenon is discussed in details.

  • This paper is aimed to investigate behaviour of vortex in 2-D step cavity with high Reynolds numbers$(3.2{\times}10^{3},\;10^{4},\;3{\times}10^{4},\;5{\times}10^{4}\;and\;7{\times}10^{4})$. The SOLA algorithm which is MAC type was adopted to solution method computing the flow field on irregular grid. In case of $Re=7{\times}10^{4}$ flow behavior is steady bu periodic unsteady sinusoidal fluctuation of local velocity and kinetic energy is found for $Re=10^{4}$ Continuous movements of small eddies in the secondary flow regions are discov-ered for $3{\times}10^{4}$ Generation of eddies and their active migrating behavior are detected over $Re=5{\times}10^{4}$ resulting in complete unsteady and non-linear flow characteristics Furthermore a typhoon-like vortex(TLV) appears intermittently and rotates along the separation regions and boundary layers.

  • It is very important to understand and control the sloshing in a liquid container that is partially filled with liquid. Previous studies focused primarily on the sloshing and resonance caused by sinusoidal excitations, while the present study focuses on understanding and suppressing sloshing in a container that moves rapidly from a given point to another in industrial applications. To achieve this, we first numerically predict the two-phase flow induced by the horizontal movement of a rectangular container. Then we analyze the effects of container-velocity profile (in particular acceleration/deceleration duration) on sloshing. Results show that sloshing is significantly suppressed when the acceleration/deceleration duration is a multiple of the 1st-mode natural period of sloshing.

  • Numerical simulations have been conducted to characterize unsteady flow structures in an axisymmetric supersonic inlet diffuser with sinusoidal pressure oscillations at the diffuser exit. The formulation is based on the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations and turbulence closure is achieved using a two-layer model with a too-Reynolds-number scheme for the near-wall treatment. The governing equations are formulated in an integral form, and are discretized by the four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for temporal terms and the Harten-Yee upwind TVD scheme for convective terms. Results indicated that the inlet shock characteristics are significantly modified by acoustic oscillations originating from the combustor. The characteristics of shock/boundarv-layer interactions (such as the size of separation bubble, terminal shock shape, and vorticity intensity) are also greatly iufluenced by the shock oscillation due to acoustic waves.
