Fabrication and Mechanical Properties of Cordierite/$ZrO_2$ Composites by Pressureless Sintering

  • Cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composites with 5 to 25wt% ZrO$_2$ were fabricated by prssureless sintering, and their densification behavior, fracture strength, fracture toughness, microstructure and thermal expansion behavior were studied. The ZrO$_2$ addition into cordierite matrix affects the densification behavior and mechanical properties of the composites. By dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$, densified cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composite with a relative density of 98.5% was obtained at optimum sintering condition of 144$0^{\circ}C$/2H. Both fracture strength and toughness were increased from 140 to 290MPa and from 1.6 to 3.5 MPam$\frac{1}{2}$, respectively, by dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$ into the cordierite matrix. ZrO$_2$ particles were homogenously dispersed into cordierite matrix, which intragranular particles were fine(<100nm) and intergranular particles were coarse. The toughening mechanisms in the present composites were mainly attributed to martensitic transformation toughening. Then, the addition of ZrO$_2$ is likely to have little deleterious effect upon thermal expansion coefficient of cordierite.

  • The formation and transition of 2212 and 2223 phase have been studied in BPSCCO system. The 2212 phase formed in early sintering state reacts on $Ca_2PbO_4,\;Ca_2CuO_3$ and CuO during sintering process and thus produces the 2223 phase. A long sintering period is need to fabricate the superconductor with large volume fraction of 2223 phase. Also, the thin plate-like grains composed of Bi, Sr, Ca and Cu contribute to 2223 phase formation. Though the sample has lower volume fraction of 2223 phase, the critical temperature is measured highly in case of the grain grown to plate-like shape. In this work, the critical temperature of the sample sintered for 264 hr in air was measured 108 K. Microstructure of the sample was varied with condition of heat treatment after sintering process and the sample annealed with $500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr showed excellent charateristics of 2223 phase formation.

  • Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) system consists of various element technologies. Main components of the system include a position control system, a speed control system of the roller, and nitrogen atmosphere furtherance for the powdered sintering. Other systems which make the core of the SLS system are build room and the feed room for powder epitaxial, a temperature control system, and a scan path generator for the laser. The powder material for laser sintering is necessary to produce prototypes in Solid Freeform Fabrication(SFF) based on SLS process. This powder material is sintered in powder room using $CO_2$ laser after spreading evenly using roller to reproduce mold via SFF. This study addresses an SFF system by using the SLS process which applies single laser system to enable manufacturing of 3D shape. And to evaluate applicability of the single laser system, experiments were conducted with optimal fabricating process.

Effects of the SiC Particle Size and Content on the Sintering and Mechanical Behaviors of $Al_2O_3$/SiC Particulate Composites

  • $Al_2O_3$/SiC particulate composites were fabircated by pressureless sintering. The dispersed phase was SiC of which the content was varied from 1.0 to 10 vol%. Three SiC powders having different median diameters from 0.28 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were used. The microstructure became finer and more uniform as the SiC content increased except the 10 vol% specimens, which were sintered at a higher temperature. Under the same sintering condition, densification as well as grain growth was retarded more severly when the SiC content was higher or the SiC particle size was smaller. The highest flexural strength obtained at 5.0 vol% SiC regardless of the SiC particle size seemed to be owing to the finer and more uniform microstructures of the specimens. Annealing of the specimens at $1300^{\circ}C$ improved the strength in general and this annealing effect was good for the specimens containing as low as 1.0 vol% of SiC. Fracture toughness did not change appreciably with the SiC content but, for the composites containing 10 vol% SiC, a significantly higher toughness was obtained with the specimen containing 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ SiC particles.

TiB$_2$-Fe 서메트의 소결성 및 기계적성질에 미치는 Mo첨가의 영향 (Effect of Mo Addition on the Sinterability and Mechanical Properties of TiB$_2$-Fe Cermets)

  • Fe and Fe-Mo binder were used to produce TiB2 based cermet by a pressureless sintering. The densification behaviour of TiB2-Fe-Mo cermet during liquid-phase sintering in argon was studied in relation to binder phase charactertics. The effects of Mo addition and sintering condition on the sintering behaviour and mechanical properties were also investigated. TiB2-based cermets with Fe-Mo binder composition showed a better sinterability than the cermets with only Fe binder. In TiB2-Fe-Mo cermet higher densities in the wide temperature range were obtained and also fully densified sintered cermet were obtained at 1873K The enhancement in the densification phenomenon of TiB2-Fe-Mo system can be explained by improved liquid phase wettability associated with the roles of Mo components as solute atoms. When Fe-Mo binders were used cermets with a finer grain size and enhanced mechanical properties wereproduced and new phases such as Fe2B and Mo2FeB2 were observed in the sintered cermet. The highest bending strength was obtained from the 20vol% Fe-Mo cermet and these hardness-fracture toughness combination in the wide binder compositions is better than that of TiB2-Fe cermet. In order to improve mechanical properties microstructure control with high purity powders is desirable because high purity powders prevent the formation of Fe2B and Mo2FeB2 phase which comsume the ductile binder phase.

열처리조건이 두 NASICON 조성의 소결 및 전기적특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Heat-treatment Condition on the Characteristics of Sintering and Electrical Behaviors of Two NASICON Compounds)

  • Effects of sintering temperature and time on the phase formation, the characteristics of sintering and electrical behaviors of NASICON compounds with Na3Zr2Si2PO12 and Na3.2Zr1.3Si2.2P0.8O10.5 compositions synthesized by solid state reaction were investigated. Maximum relative densities of 96% and 91% were obtained for Na3Zr2Si2PO12 and Na3.2Zr1.3Si2.2P0.8O10.5 compounds, respectively. Complex impedance analysis in a frequency range below 4 MHz was performed to measure the ionic conductivity and migration barrier height of the compounds at RT-30$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum ionic conductivity and the minimum migration barrier height were 0.45 ohm-1cm-1 and 0.07 eV, respectively. The migration barrier height of the high temperature form (space group : R3c) is about 30-40% of that of the low temperature form (space group : C2/c) in two NASICON compounds. Ionic conductivity increases with increasing sinterability, and the presence of glass phase in Na3.2Zr1.3Si2.2P0.8O10.5 compounds lowers significantly ionic conductivity at temperatures above 14$0^{\circ}C$.

질화상압(NPS)법으로 제조한 질화규소의 열충격 저항성 및 내부식성 특성평가 (Thermal Shock and Hot Corrosion Resistance of Si3N4 Fabricated by Nitrided Pressureless Sintering)

  • Thermal shock and hot corrosion resistance of silicon nitride ceramics are investigated in this study. Silicon nitrides are fabricated by nitride pressureless sintering (NPS) process, which process is the continuous process of nitridation reaction of Si metal combined with subsequent pressureless sintering. The results of thermal shock test show it sustains 400MPa of initial strength during test in the designated condition of ${\Delta}T=700{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ up to maximum 4,800 cycles. Hot corrosion tests also reveal that the strength degradation of NPS silicon nitride did not occur at $700^{\circ}C$ with an exposure in Ar, $H_2$, Na and K for 1,275 h.

  • This study investigated the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of lead-free 0.74(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.26SrTiO3 (BNST26) piezoelectric ceramics sintered using a microwave furnace. For comparison, specimens were also prepared using a conventional furnace sintering (CFS). Average grain sizes of 2.4 ㎛ and 3.2 ㎛ were obtained in the sample sintered at 1,100℃ for 5 min using microwave sintering (MWS) and at 1,175℃ for 2 h using CFS, respectively. To quantify the changes in the microstructures and electrical properties according to the sintering conditions, the polarization hysteresis, bipolar and unipolar strain curves, and temperature dependence of permittivity were evaluated. As a result, it was determined that the Pmax (maximum polarization), Pr (remanent polarization) and Smax (maximum strain) values tend to increase with the average grain size. Based on these results, it is concluded that the MWS method can produce lead-free ceramics with superior performance in a relatively short time compared to the conventional CFS method.

Fine Ceramics의 Casting공정을 위한 다공질 알루미나 몰드의 제조 (Fabrication of Porous Alumina Mold for the Casting Process of Fine Ceramics)

  • 석고몰드의 단점을 극복할 수 있는 다공질 알루미나 몰드의 제조저건을 확립하였다. 다공질 알루미나 몰드의 제조를 위해 활성탄의 질량비에 따라 조성비를 달리하여 첨가한 후, ESA와 유동특성 등을 조하삼으로써 안정된 이상 슬러리를 제조하였으며, 이를 석고몰드에 캐스팅하여 얻은 원통형 알루미나 몰드를 사용하여 활성탄의 양과 소결온도에 따른 수축율 변화와 마모에 대한 저항성을 측정하였다. 다공질 알루미나 몰드의 소결에서는 비수축 소결구인 표면확산에 의해 입자간 넥 강도의 증진을 통한 몰드의 강도 증진을 도모하는 것이 바람직하며, 이를 위해 1,00$0^{\circ}C$이하에서 유지시간의 변화에 따른 열역학적 방법, 1,00$0^{\circ}C$이상의 온도에서 알루미나의 수축을 억제하면서 빠른 승온속도를 열처리온도에 따른 동역학적 방법과 이 두가지 방법을 혼합하는 방법 등으로 구분하여 다동질 알루미나 몰드의 소결조건을 분석하였다. 위 방법들에 대한 다공질 알루미나 몰드의 캐스팅 특성을 분석한 결과, 복합 소결법이 최적임을 알수 있었다. 제조된 다공질 알루미나 몰드의 비교적 높은 강도를 보였으며, 석고몰드레 비해 빠른 건조시간, 산, 염기에 대한 내식성 및 캐스팅 특성이 우수하였다.
