Sintering of Alumina in the Presence of Oxynitride Additives (Oxynitride의 첨가에 의한 알루미나의 소결)

  • Sintering of alumina powder was studied in the presence of Y-Si oxide and oxynitride additives. The main crystalline phase of the sintering aids pre-reacted at $1400^{\circ}C$ was $\alpha$ - $Y_2$$SiO_2$>$O_7$. Y-N apatite was co-existed in the Si-40N sintering aid because of its high content of N. During the sintering process, liquid phases were formed by the reaction between additives and alumina, and these liquid phases promote the densification of alumina. SEM micrographs showed that uniform grain growth occurred in the system with oxide additive(Si-0N). In the case of oxynitride additive system(Si-20N and Si-40N), bimodal microstructure was observed due to the exaggerated grain growth, As the nitrogen content in the additive system increased the exaggerated grain growth occurred extensively. Bloating, which seemed to be originated by the liberation of $N_2$ gas, occurred un the Si-40N oxynitride additive system.

  • PZT 세라믹은 우수한 유전 및 압전특성을 갖고 있어 변압기, 센서 및 엑츄에이터 등에 널리 응용되고 있다. 그러나, 우수한 특성에도 불구하고 PZT세라믹스의 소결시 PbO의 높은 유독성 및 휘발로 인하여 환경오염을 야기 시킨다. 그러므로 PbO로 구성된 세라믹을 대체하기 위한 우수한 압전특성을 가진 비납계 세라믹스 개발이 연구의 주류를 이루고 있다. 그 중 비납계 NKN와 BZT는 대체물질로 많이 관심을 받고 있다. 이는 일반적인 NKN조성은 우수한 압전성과 높은 큐리온도를 가지고 있을 뿐만 아니라, BZT조성의 Zr성분이 큐리온도를 낮추거나 유전특성을 졸게 하여 유전율 곡선을 완화하게 하는 특징이 있다. 하지만 NKN은 $1140^{\circ}C$이상의 소결온도에서 K의 휘발특성으로 인해 소성 후에도 주변의 수분을 흡수하는 조해성이 발생하는 문제가 발생한다. 그래서 본 연구에서는 낮은 온도에서 NKN계 세라믹스의 밀도를 증가시킬 뿐만 아니라, 우수한 유전 및 압전특성을 갖는 세라믹스를 제조하고자 비납계 $0.94(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3-0.06Ba(Zr_{0.05}Ti_{0.95})O_3$ (NKN-BZT)의 조성을 사용하였고 소결조제로는 $MnO_2$, NiO, $Bi_2O_3$, ZnO, $Li_2CO_3$, CuO등을 변화주어 유전 및 압전 특성을 알아보았다.

Corrosive Degradation of MgO/Al2O3-Added Si3N4 Ceramics under a Hydrothermal Condition (MgO/Al2O3가 소결조제로 첨가된 Si3N4 세라믹스의 수열 조건에서의 부식열화 거동)

  • Silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) ceramics have been considered for various components of nuclear power plants such as the mechanical seal of a reactor coolant pump (RCP), the guide roller for a control rod drive mechanism (CRDM), and a seal support, etc. Corrosion behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics in a high-temperature and high-pressure water must be elucidated before they can be considered as components for nuclear power plants. In this study, the corrosion behaviors of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics containing MgO and $Al_2O_3$ as sintering aids were investigated at a hydrothermal condition ($300^{\circ}C$, 9.0 MPa) in pure water and 35 ppm LiOH solution. The corrosion reactions were controlled by a diffusion of the reactive species and/or products through the corroded layer. The grain-boundary phase was preferentially corroded in pure water whereas the $Si_3N_4$ grain seemed to be corroded at a similar rate to the grain-boundary phase in LiOH solution. Flexural strengths of the $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were significantly degraded due to the corrosion reaction. Results of this study imply that a variation of the sintering aids and/or a control (e.g., crystallization) of the grain-boundary phase are necessary to increase the corrosion resistance of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics in a high-temperature water.

  • In this study, in order to develop the multilayer piezoelectric actuator and ultrasonic resonator, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated by sintering with $Li_2CO_3-Na_2CO_3$ as sintering aids at $950^{\circ}C$ and their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated as a function of PNN substitution. With increasing PNN substitution, dielectric constant(${\epsilon}_r$), electromechanical coupling factor(kp), and piezoelectric d constant($d_{33}$) were increased to $12 mol\%$ PNN substitution and then showed a tendency to decrease rapidly With increasing PNN substitution, crystal structure changed from tetragonal to rhombohedral at $12 mol\%$ PNN substitution and then secondary phase was appeared and its intensity was increased. At the $12 mol\%$ PNN substituted PMN-PZT composition ceramic sintered at $950^{\circ}C$, density, kp, $d_{33}$ and Qm showed the optimum value of $7.79 g/cm^3$, 0.599, 419 pC/N, and 894, respectively for multilayer piezoelectric actuator application.

Piezoelectric and Dielectric Characteristics of Low Temperature Sintering PNW-PMN-PZT Ceramics with the Amount of $CaCO_3$ Addition ($CaCO_3$ 첨가에 따른 저온소결 PNW-PMN-PZT 세라믹스의 압전 및 유전 특성)

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering ceramics for ultrasonic vibrator, PNW-PMN-PZT system ceramics were manufactured with the amount of $CaCO_3$ addition and their piezoelectric, dielectric and microstructural characteristics were investigated. $CaCO_3$ addition to PNW-PMN-PZT basic composition was proved to be capable of sintering the ceramics at temperature below $1000^{\circ}C$ due to the effect of $Li_2CO_3-CaCO_3$ liquid phase. However, with increasing the amount of $CaCO_3$ addition, the second phase was appeared. As the results, electromechanical coupling coefficient (kp) and dielectric constant $(\epsilon_r)$ decreased. Taking into consideration electromechanical coupling coefficient (kp) of 0.49, mechanical quality factor (Qm) of 1396, dielectric constant $(\epsilon_r)$ of 1300 and density of $7.78[g/cm^2]$, it was concluded that the 0.25wt% $CaCO_3$ addition composition ceramics sintered at $920^{\circ}C$ was suitable for ultrasonic vibrator application.

Low Temperature Sintering of Lead-Free Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-SrTiO3 Piezoceramics by Li2CO3-B2O3 Addition (Li2CO3와 B2O3를 첨가한 Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-SrTiO3 무연 압전 세라믹스의 저온 소성 연구)

  • This study investigated microstructures, crystal structures, polarization, dielectric and electromechanical properties of 0.76Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-0.24SrTiO3 (BNT-24ST)-based piezoceramcs by adding Li2CO3 and B2O3 (LB) as sintering aids for low-temperature sintering. All samples were successfully synthesized using conventional solid-state reaction method and sintered at 950, 1,000, 1,050, 1,100 and 1,175℃ for 2 hours. Without LB, specimens required sintering temperatures over 1,175℃ for sufficient densification, while the addition of 0.10-mol LB decreased the sintering temperatures down to 950℃. The average grain size and dielectric properties of BNT-24ST-10LB ceramics were enhanced with increasing sintering temperature. We found that the low-temperature sintered BNT-24ST piezoceramics by adding LB showed the d33*value of 402 pm/V at 4 kV/mm after sintering at 1,050℃, which was better than that of high-temperature fired specimens sintered at 1,175℃ without LB (242 pm/V). We believe that the results of this study promise a candidate for low-cost multilayer ceramic actuator applications.

Tribological Properties of Hot Pressed $SiC/Si_3N_4$ Composites (가압소결 $SiC/Si_3N_4$ 복합체의 마찰마모특성)

  • SiC-Si3N4 composites were prepared by mixing $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder to $\alpha$-SiC powder in the range of 10 to 30 vol% with 10vol% interval. 6wg% Al2O3 and 6wt% Y2O3 were respectively added as sintering aids. Hot pressing was performed at 1,80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour with 25 MPa pressure. In the case of adding 20vol% of $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder the relative density to theoretical value and the flexural strength were 99.1% and 34,420 MPa respectively and the worn amount was 2.09$\times$10-3 mm2 which were the highest values in the all range of he composition. Although the composite containig 10 vol% of $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder showed the highest fracture toughness(KIC) of 4.65MN/m3/2 the reduction of the wear resistance in this composite is likely to be affected by the homogeneity and the uniformity of the grain coalescence and growth during the sintering process.

Synthesis of $TiB_2-Al_2O_3$ Composite by Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) and Its Pressureless Sintering (SHS법에 의한 $TiB_2-Al_2O_3$계 복합물의 합성 및 상압소결에 관한 연구)

  • A composite of TiB2-Al2O3 system was successfully prepared from a mixture of TiO2, B2O3, and Al by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) with a novel characteristic, utilizing the internal oxidation heat of aluminium metal of the mixture, instead of by a conventional technique, externally heating a mixture of Ti, B and Al2O3. From a mixture with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0, pure two phases of TiB2 and $\alpha$-Al2O3 with good crystallinity and small, uniform sizes were formed. However, when the B/Ti molar ratio of the mixture goes to a value less than 2.0, in addition to the above main minerals, a small smounts of metastable phases such as TiB and Ti3B4 were formed. It was found that about 60%, the optimum green density of compacts gave their highest reaction rate and temperature during SHS process. TiB2-Al2O3 system composite with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0 could be pressurelessly sintered even at 190$0^{\circ}C$ under Ar gas flows without any addition of sintering aids, showing their good properties such as 91.2% in relative density, 2750 kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ in Vickers hardness and 2620 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in flexural strength.

Physical Properties of PNN-PMN-PZT Doped with Zinc Oxide and CLBO for Ultrasonic Transducer

  • In this paper, to develop the ceramics with high $d_{33}$ and high $Q_m$ for ultrasonic transducer applications, $0.10Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-0.07Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-0.83Pb(Zr_{0.5}Ti_{0.5})_{0.83}O_3$ (PNN-PMN-PZT) ceramics were sintered at $940^{\circ}C$ using $CuO-Li_2CO_3-Bi_2O_3$ (CLBO) as a sintering aid by a traditional solid-state technique. The influence of zinc oxide additive on the physical properties of the prepared ceramics were systematically investigated. The R-T (rhombohedral-tetragonal) phase coexistence was found in the ceramics without zinc oxide additive and with increasing amounts of ZnO additive, the specimens showed a tetragonal phase. The formation of a liquid phase between ZnO and $Bi_2O_3$ contributed significantly to the grain growth of specimens. For the 0.1 wt% ZnO ceramics, the optimal physical properties of $d_{33}=370pC/N$, ${\varepsilon}_r=1,344$, $k_p=0.621$, and $Q_m=1,523$ were obtained.
