  • The liquid-phase sintering method was used to prepare a glass lens forming core composed of SiC-$Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$. Spark plasma sintering was used to obtain dense sintered bodies. The sintering characteristics of different SiC sources and compositions of additives were studied. Results revealed that, owing to its initial larger surface area, $\alpha$-SiC offers sinterability that is superior to that of $\beta$-SiC. A maximum density of $3.32\;g/cm^3$ (theoretical density [TD] of 99.7%) was obtained in $\alpha$-SiC-10 wt% ($6Al_2O_3-4Y_2O_3$) sintered at $1850^{\circ}C$ without high-energy ball milling. The maximum hardness and compression stress of the sintered body reached 2870 Hv and 1110 MPa, respectively. The optimum ultra-precision machining parameters were a grinding speed of 1243 m/min, work spindle rotation rate of 100 rpm, feed rate of 0.5 mm/min, and depth of cut of $0.2\;{\mu}m$. The surface roughnesses of the thus prepared final products were Ra = 4.3 nm and Rt = 55.3 nm for the aspheric lens forming core and Ra = 4.4 nm and Rt = 41.9 for the spherical lens forming core. These values were found to be sufficiently low, and the cores showed good compatibility between SiC and the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating material. Thus, these glass lens forming cores have great potential for application in the lens industry.

  • The quality of the ceramic sintered coating on a metal surface through laser surface treatment is affected by the laser irradiation pattern. Depending on the laser irradiation pattern, the amount of residual stress and heat applied or accumulated on the surface increases or decreases, affecting the thickness attained in the ceramic sintering area. When the heat energy accumulated in the sintering area is high, the ceramic and the metal alloy melt and sufficiently mix to form a homogeneous and thick bonding interface. In this study, the thermal energy accumulation in the region sintered with zirconia was controlled using four types of laser processing patterns. The thickness of the diffusion region is analyzed by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy of Mg-ZrO2 generated by laser sintering zirconia powder on the magnesium alloy surface. On the basis of the analysis of the Mg and Zr present in the sintered region through LIBS, the effect of the irradiation pattern on the sintering quality is confirmed by comparing and analyzing the heat and mass transfer tendency of the diffusion layer and the degree of diffusion according to the irradiation pattern. The derived diffusion coefficients differed by up to 9.8 times for each laser scanning pattern.

  • A spark plasma sintering technique has been used for the fabrication of $Al_2O_3$-SiC nanocomposites at the low temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$$1500^{\circ}C$. The sintered $Al_2O_3$-SiC composites shows very homogeneous microstructure without any particular abnormal grain growth, indicating that the addition of nano-sized SiC particles is very effective to control grain growth and to induce the residual stress in the $Al_2O_3$ matrix, resulting in the intragranular fracture. These SiC particles are present in the grain boundaries and also intragrain, depending on the sintering condition, and improve remarkably the mechanical properties of $Al_2O_3$-SiC composite through the mechanisms of strengthening and toughening induced by crack diffraction and crack bridging.

  • We report the effect of Standard Clean-1 (SC-1) cleaning to remove residual Ti layers after silicidation to prevent Al diffusion into Si wafer for Ti Schottky barrier diodes (Ti-SBD). Regardless of SC-1 cleaning, the presence of oxygen atoms is confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) depth profile analysis between Al and Ti-silicide layers. Al atoms at the interface of Ti-silicide and Si wafer are detected, when the SC-1 cleaning is not conducted after rapid thermal annealing. On the other hand, Al atoms are not found at the interface of Ti-SBD after executing SC-1 cleaning. Al diffusion into the interface between Ti-silicide and Si wafer may be caused by thermal stress at the Ti-silicide layer. The difference of the thermal expansion coefficients of Ti and Ti-silicide gives rise to thermal stress at the interface during the Al layer deposition and sintering processes. Although a longer sintering time is conducted for Ti-SBD, the Al atoms do not diffuse into the surface of the Si wafer. Therefore, the removal of the Ti layer by the SC-1 cleaning can prevent Al diffusion for Ti-SBD.

  • An alternative fabrication method for carburizing steel using spark plasma sintering (SPS) is investigated. The sintered carburized sample, which exhibits surface modification effects such as carburizing, sintered Fe, and sintered Fe-0.8 wt.%C alloys, is fabricated using SPS. X-ray diffraction and micro Vickers tests are employed to confirm the phase and properties. Finite element analysis is performed to evaluate the change in hardness and analyze the carbon content and residual stress of the carburized sample. The change in the hardness of the carburized sample has the same tendency to predict hardness. The difference in hardness between the carburized sample and the predicted value is also discussed. The carburized sample exhibits a compressive residual stress at the surface. These results indicate that the carburized sample experiences a surface modification effect without carburization. Field emission scanning electron microscopy is employed to verify the change in phase. A novel fabrication method for altering the carburization is successfully proposed. We expect this fabrication method to solve the problems associated with carburization.

  • Plastic deformation was observed by TEM around the intragranular SiC particles in the $Al_2O_3$ matrix for $Al_2O_3/SiC$ nanocomposite system. The dislocations are generated at selected planes and there is a tendency for the dislocations to form a subgrain boundary structure with low-angel grain boundaries and networks. In this study, dislocation generated in the $Al_2O_3$ matrix during cooling down from sintering temperatures by the highly localized thermal stresses within and/or around SiC particles caused from the thermal expansion mismatch between $Al_2O_3$ matrix and SiC particle was observed. In monolithic $Al_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3/SiC$ microcomposite system. These phenomena is closely related to the plastic relaxation of the elastic stress and strain energy associated with both thermal misfitting inclusions and creep behaviors. The plastic relaxation behavior was explained by combination of yield stress and internal stress.

  • SiAlON glasses are silicates or alumino-silicates, containing Mg, Ca, Y or rare earth (RE) ions as modifiers, in which nitrogen atoms substitute for oxygen atoms in the glass network. These glasses are found as intergranular films and at triple point junctions in silicon nitride ceramics and these grain boundary phases affect their fracture behaviour. This paper provides an overview of the preparation of M-SiAlON glasses and outlines the effects of composition on properties. As nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in SiAlON glasses, increases are observed in glass transition temperatures, viscosities, elastic moduli and microhardness. These property changes are compared with known effects of grain boundary glass chemistry in silicon nitride ceramics. Oxide sintering additives provide conditions for liquid phase sintering, reacting with surface silica on the $Si_3N_4$ particles and some of the nitride to form SiAlON liquid phases which on cooling remain as intergranular glasses. Thermal expansion mismatch between the grain boundary glass and the silicon nitride causes residual stresses in the material which can be determined from bulk SiAlON glass properties. The tensile residual stresses in the glass phase increase with increasing Y:Al ratio and this correlates with increasing fracture toughness as a result of easier debonding at the glass/${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ interface.

  • ZnS-$SiO_2$ composite is normally used for sputtering target. In recent years, high sputtering power for higher deposition rate often causes crack formation of the target. Therefore the target material is required that the sintered target material should have high crack resistance, excellent strength and a homogeneous microstructure with high sintered density. In this study, raw ZnS and ZnS-$SiO_2$ powders prepared by a 3-D mixer or high energy ball-milling were successfully densified by spark plasma sintering, the effective densification method of hard-to-sinter materials in a short time. After sintering, the fracture toughness was measured by the indentation fracture (IF) method. Due to the effect of crack deflection by the residual stress occurred by the second phase of fine $SiO_2$, the hardness and fracture toughness reached to 3.031 GPa and $1.014MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • The slip casting process is widely used to make green bodies from ceramic slips into dense compacts with homogeneous microstructure. However, stress may be generated inside the green body during drying, and can lead to cracking and bending during sintering. When starting from the spherical powders with mono-size distribution to make the close packed body, interstitial voids on octahedral and tetrahedral sites are formed. In this research, experiments were carried out with powders of three size types (host powder (H), octahedral void filling powder (O) and tetrahedral void filling powder (T)) controlled for average particle size by milling from two commercial alumina powders. Slips were prepared using three different powder batches from H only, H+O or H+O+T mixed powders. After manufacturing green compacts by solid-casting, compacts were dried at constant temperature and humidity and sintered at $1650^{\circ}C$. Alumina samples fabricated from the multi-sized powder mixture had improved compacted and sintered densities.

  • Recently flexible electrode materials have attracted attention in various electrical devices. In general, copper(Cu) is widely used electrical conductive material. However, Cu film showed drastically reduction of electrical conductivities under an applied tensile strain of 10%. These poor mechanical characteristics of Cu have difficulty applying in flexible electronic applications. In this study, mechanical flexibilities of Cu thin film were improved by hybridization with carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and laser sintering. First, thin carbon nanotube films were fabricated on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate(PET) substrate by using ultrasonic spray coating of CNT dispersed solution. After then, physically connected CNT-Cu NPs films were formed by utilizing ultrasonic spray coating of Cu nanoparticles dispersed solution on prepared CNT thin films. Finally, CNT-Cu thin films were firmly connected by laser sintering. Therefore, electrical stabilities under mechanical stress of CNT-Cu hybrid thin films were compared with Cu thin films fabricated under same conditions to confirm improvement of mechanical flexibilities by hybridization of CNT and Cu NPs.
