  • A new extra-fine grade Ni powder (XF Ni) has demonstrated increased sintering activity in Co-Fe-Ni binders for diamond tool applications. XF Ni has the advantage of significantly lower cost than XF Co. Up to 30% of XF Co was substituted with XF Ni while maintaining comparable apparent hardness and transverse rupture strength to pure Co binders. Ni substantially increased the diffusion of Fe. Diamond tool producers can take advantage of the improved sintering properties of XF Ni powder to substantially lower material costs.

  • Generally, high-temperature, high-pressure, high-priced sintering equipment is used for diamond sintering, and conductivity is a problem for improving the surface modification of the sintered body. In this study, to improve the efficiency of diamond sintering, we identified a new process and material that can be sintered at low temperature, and attempted to develop a composite thin film that can be discharged by doping boron gas to improve the surface modification of the sintered body. Sintered bodies were sintered by mixing Si and two diamonds in different particle sizes based on CIP molding and HIP molding. In CVD deposition, CVD was performed using WC-Co cemented carbide using CH4 and H2 gas, and the specimen was made conductive using boron gas. According to the experimental results of the sintered body, as the Si content is increased, the Vickers hardness decreases drastically, and the values of tensile strength, Young's modulus and fracture toughness greatly increase. Conductive CVD deposited diamond was boron deposited and discharged. As the amount of boron added increased, the strength of diamond peaks decreased and crystallinity improved. In addition, considering the release processability, tool life and adhesion of the deposition surface according to the amount of boron added, the appropriate amount of boron can be confirmed. Therefore, by solving the method of low temperature sintering and conductivity problem, the possibility of solving the existing sintering and deposition problem is presented.

  • In the present study, Zr-base metallic glass (MG) and Zr-base BMG/diamond composites were fabricated using a combination of gas atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microstructure, thermal stability and mechanical property of both the specimens as atomized and sintered were investigated. The experimental results showed that the SPSed specimens could be densified into nearly 100% and maintained the initial thermal stability at the sintering temperature of 630K. In addition, MG/diamond powder composites were successfully synthesised using SPS process. The composites, even a very low diamond volume fraction, generated a significant increase in compressive strength. With increasing the diamond volume fraction, the compressive strength was also increased due to the addition of hardest diamonds. It suggests that these composites would be potential candidates for a new cutting tool material.

  • In the present study, Zr-base metallic glass(MG)/diamond composites are fabricated using a combination of gas-atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The densification behaviors of mixtures of soft MG and hard diamond powders during consolidation process are investigated. The influence of mixture characteristics on the densification is discussed and several mechanism explaining the influence of diamond particles on consolidation behaviour are proposed. The experimental results show that consolidation is enhanced with increasing diamond/Metallic Glass(MG) size ratio, while the diamond fraction is fixed.

  • In this study, unsistered, pre-sintered and sintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the machniability, the optimum tool materials and the optimum tool materials and the optimum cutting conditions. The maon conclusions obtained were as follows. (1) Machined withalloy steel tool, the machinabilty of te pre-sintered ceramics becomes better with the decrease of pre-sintering temperature, but that of unsintered ceramics(white body) was extremely poor. (2) In the case of carbide tool K01, the tool life in machining white body was the longest, and the machinabilty of pre-sintered ceramics becomes poorer with the increase of the pre-sintering temperature. (3) In the case of ceramic tool, the 10000-1100 .deg. C pre-sintered ceramics showed te best machinability within a certain cutting speed range. So far as dry machining, the above combination and conditions showed the highest productivity. (4) When the pre-sintered ceramics were wet machined withsintered diamond tool, the tool life becomes extremelylong, and higher cutting speed can be can be used than in the case offull-sintered ceramics. The productivity of wet cutting is much higher than that ofdry cutting.

  • Conventional cutting(CC) and Ultrasonic Vibration Cutting(UVC) of 20[KHz] are practised with standard lathe for fine ceramics(A1$_{2}$O$_{3}$. UVC is suggested to good cutting method for difficult-to-machine-materials and it is known to excellent cutting method to super precision cutting and elevation of productibility for general, nonferrous matals. In this research, main results to be obtained are as follows: 1. From the CC and UVC results by general lathe with sintering diamond tool, the surface roughness and roundness are improved in UVC. Also tool life is longer in UVC than CC. From the observation of machined surface, it is found that brittle fracutural material remove occured in fine ceramics cutting. 2. It is verified that the thrust force is the biggest in fine ceramics cutting, principal force is the next, and feed rate force the third and it is appear a little, on the other hand the principal force is the biggest in metal cutting, feed rate frece is the second, and thrust force is the next.

  • For dry machining of mineral materials the Institute of Materials Engineering pursues a novel thermal protection shield concept for diamond tools, in which thermal insulating materials in diamond composite structures act as heat shield, which protects diamonds in deeper layers against high temperature and graphitisation. Before the effectiveness of this concept could be investigated suitable composites have to be manufactured. In this paper the powder metallurgical production processes of diamond-alumina-cobalt-composites with varying alumina and cobalt particle sizes, their microstructures and porosities are described. It could be observed that the distribution of small-sized alumina particles ($<70{\mu}m$) in the cobalt matrix is uniform and the porosity of the composite decrease.

  • Recently, the brittle materials such as ceramics, glass, sapphire and textile material have been widely used in semiconductors, aerospace and automobile owing to high functional characteristics. On the other hand, it has the characteristics of difficult-to-cut material relative to all materials. In this study, diamond electro-deposited band-saw machine was developed to operate stably using water-coolant type through relative motion between band-saw tool and $Al_2O_3$ material. High densified $Al_2O_3$ material was manufactured by spark plasma sintering method. The bulk density was observed by the Archimedes law and the theoretical density was estimated to be $3.88g/cm^3$ and its hardness 14.7 MPa. From the dicing sawing test of $Al_2O_3$ specimen, behavior of surface roughness and band-saw wear are dominantly affected by the increase of the band-saw linear velocity. Additionally, an continuous pattern type of diamond band-saw was a very effective due to entry impact as a one-off for brittle material.

  • Ceramic plates containing many micro-holes are used in diverse applications such as MCP (Microchannel Plate). catalytic converters, filters, electrical insulators in integrated circuits, and so on. One of the efficient methods for machining many holes in ceramic plates is wet drilling of ceramic green bodies followed by sintering them. Since the strength of ceramic green bodies is much lower than the strength of sintered ceramic plate, ceramic green bodies can be drilled with high feed rate. The axial force during micro-drilling of ceramic green bodies increases rapidly at high feed rate, which induces the crack in workpiece. Therefore, the tool lift of micro-drill with respect to feed rate may be determined by the predicting increase of axial force. In this work, the axial force during micro-drilling was calculated using the chip flow model on the micro-drill tip. from which the tool life of diamond abrasive micro-drill during micro-drilling of ceramic green bodies was calculated.

  • This article presents the successful consolidation of the mixed Co and Diamond powders for a drilling segment by the combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering, and their properties were analyzed. Homogeneous hardness (Hv 220) and density (97%) of sintered bulks fabricated by MPC were obtained by the new technique, where higher pressure has been employed for short period of time than that of general process. A fine microstructure and homogeneous hardness in the consolidated bulk were observed without cracks. Relatively higher drilling speed of 9.61 cm/min and life time of 6.55 m were found to the MPCed specimens, whereas the value of the specimens fabricated by general process was 11.71 cm/min and 7.96 m, respectively. A substantial improvement of mechanical properties of segment was achieved through this study.
