  • High strength PM aluminium alloys Al-Zn-Mg-Cu (7075 type) were studied by using commercially available powder blends and the sinter-forging technique for component production. Principal areas of focus include the response to PM processing, micro structural assessment and material properties of Aluminium sinter forged products. Green preforms are successfully sintered to near full density by solid-supersolidus liquid phase sintering. Sinter forging method can produce components with net shape and mechanical characteristics of the material have improved greatly. Properties of this new PM Al-alloy were found to be reproducible in an industrial production environment.

A Study on the Combustion Characteristics of Coke and Anthracite in an Iron Ore Sintering Bed (소결층 내에서의 코크스와 무연탄의 연소 특성 비교 연구)

  • Coal combustion in an iron ore sintering bed is a key parameter that determines quality of the sintered ores and productivity of the process. In this study, effects of the different types of coal - coke and anthracite - on the combustion in the iron ore sintering bed are investigated by modeling and experiment. Fuel characteristics of coke and anthracite are observed through a set of basic analysis and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Coke has a higher reactivity than anthracite due to the difference of surface area and density, and these characteristics are reflected in the 1-D unsteady simulation of the iron ore sintering bed. Calculation results show that different reactivity of the fuel can affect the bed combustion.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influence of thermal debinding and sintering conditions on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of PIMed 316L stainless steel. The water atomized powders were mixed with multi-component wax-base binder system, injection molded into flat tensile specimens. Binder was removed by solvent immersion method followed by thermal debinding, which was carried out in air and hydrogen atmospheres. Sintering was done in hydrogen for 1 hour at temperatures ranging from 1000℃ to 1350℃ The weight loss, residual carbon and oxygen contents were monitored at each stage of debinding and sintering processes. Tensile properties of the sintered specimen varied depending on the densification and the characteristics of the grain boundaries, which includes the pore morphology and residual oxides at the boundaries. The sinter density, tensile strength (UTS), and elongation to fracture of the optimized specimen were 95%, 540 MPa, and 53%, respectively.

  • SiC(p)-TiC(p) composites were prepared by gas pressure sintering technique. B4C powder and phenolic resin were added as sintering aids by 0.3 wt%-B and 3 wt%-C, TiC powder were dispersed in SiC by 0, 10, 20, 30 and 50 vol%. Flextural strength, fracture toughness and theoretical density of 70 vol% SiC-30 vol% TiC composite sintered at 220$0^{\circ}C$ by gas pressing were 540 MPa, 5.5 MPa.m1/2 and 98.8% respectively.

  • Boron cabride was prepared from the mixture of metal boron and graphite powders in Argon atmosphere by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis Chemical furnace. The most excellent mechanical properties were in the case that Fe was added as a sintering agent before the synthesis of the B4C in the Chemical furnace. Sintered B4C-5wt% Fe specimen showed the relative density of 95%, of theoretical value, and 3-point-flexural strength of 380MPa.

  • Monodispersed PZT fine particles were obtained from the condition which 0.2Pb (OC3H7)2/EtOH, 0.108Zr(OC4H9)4/EtOH and 0.092 Ti (OC2H5)4/EtOH were refluxed for 5 hrs at 76$^{\circ}C$ and hydrolyzed with 0.1-0.4 H2O/EtOH. The monodispersed particle was amorphous and crystallized to the tetragonal PZT phase when heated at $600^{\circ}C$. Particle size was about 0.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in 0.3 H2O/EtOH and 0.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in other cases. Relative density of sintered body at 90$0^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$ was 93.5% and 98%, respectively.

  • Pressureless-sintering of SiC with additions of yttria and alumina was studied. SiC could be densified to about 97% of its theoretical density at 185$0^{\circ}C$ which is about 20$0^{\circ}C$ below the normal sintering temperature of SiC with boron and carbon. Yttria and alumina formed intergranular liquid phases at the sintering temperature and promoted densification by the liquid phase sintering mechanism. The microstructure of sintered specimens was equiaxed and the liquid phase appeared to wet and dissolve SiC grains. The fracture toughness was measured by indentation method and found to be 5.3MPa.m1/2. Processing flaws near the surface of specimens appeared to be the major fracture origin during 3-point bending tests.

  • A new process of emulsiion-spray pyrolysis for synthesizing ceramic powders was developed and the characteristics of Al2O3-20w/o ZrO2 composite powders prepared by this method were investigated. The composite powders synthesized in this study were spherical dense particles with 0.1~0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of diameter. As found in powders derived by the emulsion-hot kerosene drying method, all zirconia in Al2O3-20w/o ZrO2 powders heat-treated at 120$0^{\circ}C$ was in the tetragonal form at room temperature. The relative density and the fracture toughness of composites sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs were 95% and 5.2MPa.m1/2, respectively.

  • The powder properties and sinterability of ZrO2-8m/o Y2O3 prepared by coprecipitation were investigated. The specific surface area and the total pore volume were increased with increasing pH of sediment and using of ethyl alcohol for washing. The powders of prepared by freeze drying method were showed the smallest particle size and lowest agglomerate rate, and the powders obtained from spray drying method were showed porous structure. At 130$0^{\circ}C$, their relative density were 94-96%, so these sintered bodies have revealed high sinterability in spite of low sintering temperature.

  • Ti-B system ceramics were prepared by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method from the mixture of metal titanium and boron powders The major crystalline phase as a function of boron content was TiB for mixtures containing 0.5 or 1.0mol B, and TiB2 for these containing over 1.3mol B. The combustion mode observed by a high-speed camera was steady-state. The Combustion velocity increased with increasing the boron content. Sintered TiB2 specimen showed the density of 97% of theoretical valve, Vicker's hardness of 2250kg/㎟ for 0.2kg load and three-point-flexure strength of 500MPa.
