Injection molded plastic parts have many surface defects. These include a weld line, sink mark, flow mark, gloss, shading, scratching etc. Because these surface faults are not aesthetically acceptable, plastic parts are produced through painting or texturing. The purpose of this paper is to develop paintless molded parts using a flow control method. Computer aided injection mold filling simulations were used in order to minimize the number of defects from injection molding. Based on the numerical results, FR(Flame Retardant) HIPS was developed and the guidelines for part design, mold design, and the processing conditions were established. The effects of cost savings, improvements in productivity, and recycling were considered by reducing the number of surface faults and eliminating the painting process.
Euler and Navier-Stokes flow analyses for helicopter rotor in hover were performed as low and high fidelity analysis models respectively for the future multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO). These design-oriented analyses possess several attributes such as variable complexity, sensitivity-computation capability and modularity which analysis models involved in MDO are recommended to provide with. To realize PC-based analyses for both fidelity models, reduction of flow domain was made by appling farfield boundary condition based on 3-dimensional point sink with simple momentum theory and also periodic boundary condition in the azimuthal direction. Correlations of thrust, torque and their sensitivities between low and high complexity models were tried to evaluate the applicability of these analysis models in MDO process. It was found that the low-fidelity Euler analysis model predicted inaccurate sensitivity derivatives at relatively high angle of attack.

A stratified flow is simulated using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). The effect of body force (gravity) in a simple one-dimensional model with the lattice BGK 9 velocity is examined. The effect of body force in the compressible fluid is greatly different from that of the incompressible fluid In a compressible fluid under gravitational force, the density stratification is not sufficient and the entropy stratification is essential. The numerical simulation of a line sink compressible stratified flow in two-dimensional channel is also carried out. The results show that selective withdrawal is established when the entropy of the upper part increases. and the simulated results using FDLB method are satisfactory compared with the theoretical one.
An experiment to investigate the natural circulation of a cryogen has been performed. The study is motivated mainly by our recent development of cryogenic cooling system for prototype superconducting cyclotron without any circulating pump. In the natural circulation loop system, a cooling channel is attached on the outer surface of the aluminium block and the liquid nitrogen passes through inside of the channel to cool the block indirectly. A cryocooler as a heat sink is located at the top to re-condense cryogenic vapor coming from the aluminium block in which electrical heater is installed as a heat source. The main dimensions are determined using the relevant analysis and the natural circulation loop is successfully fabricated. The temperature distributions in the loop are measured during initial cool-down process and in steady state, from which the modified Grashof numbers are calculated and compared with the existing correlation estimated with one-dimensional analysis for steady state flow.
In this study the unsteady aerodynamic analysis of a hovering helicopter rotor is performed. For the accurate flow field analysis Euler equations and the free wake method are coupled. The Euler equations are solved to find the pressure distribution around the rotor, and free wake method is used to give the boundary condition for the solution of Euler equations. Also, vortex strength and wake motion after the rotor are simulated by the free wake method. The accuracy of the present method is compared with the source sink model. The present method is applied to the hovering Caradonna-Tung rotor and compared with experimental results.
Mathematical formulation of the zone conditional two-fluid model is established to consider flame-generated turbulence in premixed turbulent combustion. The conditional statistics of major flow variables are investigated to understand the mechanism of flame generated turbulence. The flow field in burned zone shows substantially increased turbulent kinetic energy, which is highly anisotropic due to reaction kinematics across thin flamelets. The transverse component of rms velocities in burned zone become larger than axial component in the core of turbulent flame brush. The major source or sink terms of turbulent kinetic energy are the interfacial transfer by the mean reaction rate and the work terms by fluctuating pressure and velocity on a flame surface.

Structural intensity has been mainly utilized to identify vibration energy flow in a vessel. In this paper, the structural intensity of a shuttle tanker subjected to H-moment of the main engine was calculated using a finite element model. From the analysis, it was found that the top-bracing elements, which support the main engine onto the hull structure to prevent the excessive transverse vibration of the main engine, play the role of the dominant path and sink for vibration energy flow from the main engine. Therefore, the structural intensity was controlled by the modification of stiffness and damping characteristics of the top-bracing elements. As a result, it is observed that the transverse vibration level at the center of navigation bridge deck decreased after the control of structural intensity.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of supplemental cooling and heating system equipped with the 1 kW thermoelectric module. The system consist of 96 thermoelectric modules, heat sink with louver fin and water cooling jacket which is attached on the hot side of the thermoelectric module. The cooling and heating performance test of the thermoelectric system is conducted with various conditions, such as intake voltage, air inlet temperature, air flow volume, water inlet temperature and water flow rate at calorimeter chamber in consideration of environmental conditions in realistic vehicle drive. The experimental results of a thermoelectric system shows that the cooling capacity and COP is 1.03 kW, and 1.0, and heating capacity and COP is 1.53 kW, and 1.5 respectively.

In this paper, I introduce Phase-Change Cooling for thermal management of high power devices that can be applied to High Power Laser and Electric Propulsion Systems which are composed of multiple distributed superheat sources. Phase-Change Cooling can be good used to efficient cooling of their heat sources. Phase-Change Cooling has extremely high efficiency of two-phase heat transport by utilizing heat of vaporization, relatively low flow rates and reduced pumps power. And I suggest TPI(Thermal Performance Index) which is a quantitative performance index of Phase-Change Cooling for thermal management. I quantify the performance of Phase-Change Cooling by introducing TPI. I present the test results of TPI's changing refrigerant, heat sink and flow rate of the Phase-Change Cooling system through the experiments and analyze these results.
