The generally accepted idea for carbohydrate translocation in plants is an osmotic pressure flow hypothesis. According to the hypothesis, a high concentration of carbohydrate in the phloem of carbohydrate synthesis regions (source) causes a water influx into the phloem. The generated osmotic potential in the phloem is responsible for long distance carbohydrate transport through the positive hydrostatic pressure. In regions of carbohydrate utilization and storage (sink), translocated carbohydrates are continuously metabolized and compartmentalized, generating a concentration gradient between source and sinks. In this system, carbohydrates load into the phloem (phloem loading) and unload out of the phloem (phloem unloading). Phloem-mobile herbicides that are applied to plants are also translocated from the source to sinks. However, some experimental results reveal that the patterns of phloem translocation between carbohydrates and herbicides are different. The differences are due, in part, to the physico-chemical properties of herbicides and to the absence/presence of specific carrier(s) in the phloem.
To evaluate the usage of $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence closure for the analysis of thermal discharge behavior, a two-dimensional depth-integrated numerical model is developed. The developed model is applied to a steady flow in an open channel with simle geometry and the numerical results agree well with existing experimental data. The adequate simulation of recirculation, reattachment, and excess temperature rise at downstream of the outlet in the channel attributes to the correct calculation of turbulent eddy viscosity and diffusivity by $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence model. For an accurate prediction of thermal discharge behavior, the introduction of buoyancy production term, the modification of source/sink, and the correct input of turbulence constants of the $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence model are required.

The purpose of this study is to improve the cooling performance of single and cascade refrigeration systems using thermoelectric modules. The system consists of a heat sink, fan, and thermoelectric module. The operating parameters considered in this study include power distribution between the first- and second-stage thermoelectric modules, air flow, and variable condensing unit. The cooling capacity increased with decreases in the temperature difference between hot and cold surfaces, but decreased with increases in the condensing temperature. The COP decreased with increasing electric power of the thermoelectric module because of the increased Joule heat. The cooling performance improvement using the thermoelectric module is represented by the freezer temperature.
A fleet consists of a main vessel, light vessels and carrying vessels for purse seine fishery. Carrying vessels contains fish storages to maintain freshness of catches. Currently most carrying vessels applies the cooling system using plain ice though accompanied various shortcomings. Seawater cooling system directly chilling seawater are now in use on carrying vessels in some developed countries to make up for these shortcomings and maximize advantages. This research deals with necessity of seawater cooling systems and establishes system criteria using Aspentech HYSYS program, prior to an experiment of compact-scale seawater cooling system which now in progress of manufacture. Performance comparison on condensation capacity, mass flow rate of working fluid, compressor power input, pump power input and others of the seawater cooling system applying a flooded evaporator is conducted with respect to the temperature of surface seawater varying according to seasons. The result presents that mass flow rate circulating the system is increased about 16.7% as the temperature of surface seawater increases. At the same condition, condensation capacity and compressor input work also increase about 9.8% and 91.2%, respectively.
The steady three-dimensional computational thermal flow analysis using standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a cabin cooler for a commercial vehicle. The heat exchanging method of this cabin cooler is to use the cooling effect of a thermoelectric module. In view of the results so far achieved, the air system resistance of a cabin cooler is about 12.4 Pa as a static pressure, and then the operating point of a cross-flow fan considering in this study is formed in the comparatively low flowrate region. The air temperature difference obtained from the cold part of an thermoelectric module is about $26^{\circ}C$, and the cooling water temperature difference obtained from the hot part of an thermoelectric module is about $3.5^{\circ}C$.
In recent academic and industrial circles of the Republic of Korea, the securement of available reactive power reserve against the line faults is at issue. Thus, simulations have been performed for the securing of effective reactive power reserve (effective Q) to prepare for the line faults and improve reactive power monitoring and control methods. That is, a research has been conducted for the fast-decoupled Newton-Raphson method. In this study, a method that distinguishes source and sink regions to carry out faster provision of information in the event of line fault has been proposed. This method can perform quantification with the formula that calculates voltage variations in the line flow. The line flow and voltage changes can be easily induced by the power flow calculation performed every second in the operation system. It is expected that the proposed method will be able to contribute to securement of power system stability by securing efficient reactive power. Also, the proposed method will be able to contribute to prepare against contingencies effectively. It is not easy to prepare quickly for the situation where voltage drops rapidly due to the exhaustion of reactive power source by observing voltage information only. This paper's simulation was performed on the large scale Korean power system in steady state.
The steady three-dimensional numerical analysis on the thermal flow using standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was carried out to investigate the air cooling effect of a cooler on the cabin for a commercial vehicle. Here, the heat exchanging method of this cabin cooler uses the cooling effect of a thermoelectric module. In consequence, the air system resistance of a cooler within the cabin is about 12.1 Pa as a static pressure, and then the operating point of a virtual cross-flow fan considering in this study is formed in the comparatively low flowrate region. The discharging air temperature of a cooler is about $14{\sim}15^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the air cooling temperature difference obtained under the outdoor cabin temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ shows about $7{\sim}9^{\circ}C$ in a driver resting space and about $9{\sim}14^{\circ}C$ in the front of a driver's seat including the space of a driver's foot.
The advantages of using natural circulation (NC) as a cooling system, has prompted the worldwide development to investigate this phenomenon more than before. The interesting application of the NC in low power experimental facilities and research reactors, highlights the obligation of study in these laminar flows. The inherent oscillations of NC between hot source and cold sink in low Grashof numbers necessitates stability analysis of cooling flow with experimental or numerical schemes. For this type of analysis, numerical methods could be implemented to desired mass, momentum and energy equations as an efficient instrument for predicting the behavior of the flow field. In this work, using the explicit, implicit and Crank-Nicolson methods, the fluid flow parameters in a natural circulation experimental test loop are obtained and the sensitivity of solving approaches are discussed. In this way, at first, the steady state and transient results from explicit are obtained and compared with experimental data. The implicit and crank-Nicolson scheme is investigated in next steps and in subsequent this research is focused on the numerical aspects of instability prediction for these schemes. In the following, the assessment of the flow behavior with coarse and fine mesh sizes and time-steps has been reported and the numerical schemes convergence are compared. For more detail research, the natural circulation of fluid was modeled by ANSYS-CFX software and results for the experimental loop are shown. Finally, the stability map for rectangular closed loop was obtained with employing the Nyquist criterion.
Supercritical water-cooled reactors (SCWRs) are recognized as a Generation IV reactor concept. The Super LWR is a pressure-vessel type thermal spectrum SCWR with downward-flow water rods and is currently under study at the University of Tokyo. This paper reviews Super LWR safety. The fundamental requirement for the Super LWR, which has a once-through coolant cycle, is the core coolant flow rate rather than the coolant inventory. Key safety characteristics of the Super LWR inhere in the design features and have been identified through a series of safety analyses. Although loss-of-flow is the most important abnormality, fuel rod heat-up is mitigated by the "heat sink" and "water source" effects of the water rods. Response of the reactor power against pressurization events is mild due to a small change in the average coolant density and flow stagnation of the once-through coolant cycle. These mild responses against transients and also reactivity feedbacks provide good inherent safety against anticipated-transient-without-scram (ATWS) events without alternative actions. Initiation of an automatic depressurization system provides effective heat removal from the fuel rods. An "in-vessel accumulator" effect of the reactor vessel top dome enhances the fuel rod cooling. This effect enlarges the safety margin for large LOCA.
