  • Controlling the stick and slip motions of the contact lines in a confined geometry comprised of a spherical lens with a flat substrate is useful for manufacturing polymer ring patterns. We used a sphere on a flat geometry, by which we could control the interfaces of the solution, vapor and substrate. By this method, hundreds of concentric ring-pattern formations of a linear conjugated polymer, poly [2-methoxy-5-(2-thylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV), were generated with excellent regularity over large areas after complete solvent evaporation. Subsequently, the MEH-PPV ring patterns played a role as a directed template to organize highly regular concentric rings of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs); when a droplet of the SWCNT suspension in water was casted onto the prepared substrate, hydrophobic polymer patterns confined the water dispersed SWCNTs in between the hydrophilicized $SiO_2/Si$ substrate. As the solvent evaporated, SWCNT-rings were formed in between MEH-PPV rings with controlled density. Finally, we used a lift-off process to produce SWCNT patterns by the removal of a sacrificial polymer template with organic solvent. We also fabricated a field effect transistor using self-assembled SWCNT networks on a $SiO_2/Si$ substrate.

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been considered as a promising candidate for nextgeneration electronics due to its extraordinary electrical properties associated with one-dimensional structure. Since diversity in electronic structure depends on geometrical features, the major concern has been focused on obtaining the diameter, chirality, and density controlled SWNTs. Despite huge efforts, the controlled synthesis of SWNTs has not been achieved. There have been various approaches to synthesize controlled SWNTs by preparation of homogeneously sized catalyst because the SWNTs diameter highly depends on catalyst nanoparticles size. In this study, geometrically controlled SWNTs were synthesized using designed catalytic layers: (a) morphologically modified Al2O3 supporting layer (Fe/Al2O3/Si), (b) Mo capping layer (Mo/Fe/Al/Si), and (c) heat-driven diffusion and subsequent evaporation process of Fe catalytic nanoparticles (Al2O3/Fe/Al2O3/Si). These results clearly revealed that (a) the grain diameter and RMS roughness of Al2O3 supporting layer play a key role as a diffusion barrier for obtaining Fe nanoparticles with a uniform and small size, (b) a density and diameter of SWNTs can be simultaneously controlled by adjusting a thickness of Mo capping layer on Fe catalytic layer, and (c) SWNTs diameter was successfully controlled within a few A scale even with its fine distribution. This precise control results in bandgap manipulation of the semiconducting SWNTs, determined by direct comparison of Raman spectra and theory of extended tight binding Kataura plot. We suggest that these results provide a simple and possible way for the direct growth of diameter, density, and bandgap controlled SWNTs by precise controlling the formation of catalytic films, which will be in demand for future electronic applications.

  • The purpose of this study is to fabricate an ophthalmic lens by copolymerizing two types of carbon nanotubes and hydrophilic hydrogel lens materials, and to investigate its application as an ophthalmic lens material by analyzing its physical properties and antimicrobial effect. For polymerization, HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), a crosslinking agent, and AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile), an initiator, are used as a basic combination, and a single-walled carbon nanotube and a single-walled, carboxylic-acid-functionalized carbon nanotube are used as additives. To analyze the physical properties, the water content, refractive index, breaking strength, and antimicrobial effect of the fabricated lenses are measured. The fabricated lenses satisfies all the basic properties of the basic hydrogel ophthalmic lens. The water content increases with increasing amount of additive and decreases with addition of 0.2 % ratio of nanoparticles. The refractive index is inversely proportional to the water content result. As a result of the antimicrobial test of the fabricated lens, the addition of carbon nanotubes shows an excellent antimicrobial effect. Therefore, it is considered that the fabricated lens can be applied as a functional material for basic ophthalmic hydrogel lenses.

  • Carbon nanotubes have attracted much attention as future mechanical and electronic materials. However, manipulating techniques are not well developed yet. Here we propose to use electrostatic drop-on-demand devices to eject micro-droplets containing micelle-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes. A simple electrostatic force analysis and photographic studies of droplet ejection process are presented. The analytical analysis shows that semiconducting species have higher electrostatic force density. However, enrichment of specific electronic types is not clear at large size droplets produced in this study. A micro-scale jetting device is being produced to prove the suggested behavior.

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been chemically modified through the formation of carboxylic acid functionalities or by grafting octadecylamine and polystyrene onto them. We purified SWNTs with nitric acid to remove some remaining catalysts and amorphous carbon materials. After purification, we broke the carbon nanotubes and shortened their lengths by using a 3:1 mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid. During these purification and cutting processes, carboxylic acid units formed at the open ends of the SWNTs. Octa-decylamine and amino-terminated polystyrene were grafted onto the cut SWNTs by condensation reactions between the amine and carboxylic acid units. The cut SWNTs did not disperse in organic solvents, but the octadecylamine-grafted and polystyrene-grafted SWNTs dispersed well in dichloromethane and aromatic solvents (e.g., benzene, toluene). Composites were prepared by mixing polystyrene with the octadecylamine-grafted or polystyrene-grafted SWNTs. Each composite had a higher dynamic storage modulus than that of a pristine polystyrene. The composites exhibited enhanced storage moduli, complex viscosities, and unusual non-terminal behavior when compared with a monodisperse polystyrene matrix because of the good dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the polystyrene matrix.

  • Carbon nanotube is a geometrical frame-like structure and the primary bonds between two nearest-neighboring atoms act like beam members, whereas an individual atom acts as the joint of the related beam members. The sectional property parameters of these beam members are obtained from molecular mechanics. Computations of the elastic deformation of single-walled carbon nanotubes reveal that the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes vary with the tube diameter and are affected by their helicity. With increasing tube diameter, the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes approach the Young's modulus of graphite.

  • In this paper, the nonlocal integral Timoshenko beam model is employed to study the free vibration characteristics of singled walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) including the thermal effect. Based on the nonlocal continuum theory, the governing equations of motion are formulated by considering thermal effect. The influences of small scale parameter, the chirality of SWCNTs, the vibrational mode number, the aspect ratio of SWCNTs and temperature changes on the thermal vibration properties of single-walled nanotubes are examined and discussed. Results indicate significant dependence of natural frequencies on the nonlocal parameter, the temperature change, the aspect ratio and the chirality of SWCNTs. This work should be useful reference for the application and the design of nanoelectronics and nanoelectromechanical devices that make use of the thermal vibration properties of SWCNTs.

  • In the present article, the thermal buckling of zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is studied using a nonlocal refined shear deformation beam theory and Von-Karman geometric nonlinearity. The model developed simulates both small scale effects and higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the nanobeam. Furthermore the present formulation also accommodates stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the nanobeam. A shear correction factor, therefore, is not required. The equivalent Young's modulus and shear modulus for zigzag SWCNTs are derived using an energy-equivalent model. The present study illustrates that the thermal buckling properties of SWCNTs are strongly dependent on the scale effect and additionally on the chirality of zigzag carbon nanotube. Some illustrative examples are also presented to verify the present formulation and solutions. Good agreement is observed.

  • Nanowires of polytetrakis(o-aminophenyl)porphyrin (PTAPPNW) were fabricated by electrochemical polymerization with the cyclic voltammetric method in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. The glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by PTAPPNW, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and Nafion as a binder was investigated with voltammetric methods in a phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution at pH 7.4. The PTAPPNW + SWNT + Nafion/GCE exhibited strongly enhanced voltammetric and amperometric sensitivity towards hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), which shortened the response time and enhanced the sensitivity for $H_2O_2$ determination at an applied potential of 0.0 V by amperometric method. The PTAPPNW + SWNT + Nafion/GCE can be used to monitor $H_2O_2$ at very low concentrations in biological pH as an efficient electrochemical $H_2O_2$ sensor.
