An area of research called evolvable hardware has recently emerged which combines aspects of evolutionary computation with hardware design and synthesis. Evolvable hardware (EHW) is hardware that can change its own circuit structure by genetic learning to achieve maximum adaptation to the environment. In conventional EHW, the learning is executed by software on a computer. In this paper, we have studied and surveyed a gate-level evolvable hardware chip, by integrating both GA hardware and reconfigurable hardware within a single LSI chip. The chip consists of genetic algorithm(GA) hardware, reconfigurable hardware logic, and the control logic. In this paper, we describe the architecture, functions of the chip.

In this paper, we studyed the variables in the design of multichip memory modules with 4M$\times$1bit DRAM chips to construct high capacity and high speed memory modules. The configuration of the module was 8 bit, 16 bit, and 32 bit DRAM modules with employing 0.6 W, 70 nsec 4M$\times$1 bit DRAM chips. We optimized routing area and wiring density by performing the routing experiment with the variables of the chip allocation, module I/O terminal, the number of wiring, and the number of mounting side of the chips. The multichip module was designed to be able to accept MCM-L techiques and low cost PCB materials. The module routing experiment showed that it was an efficient way to align chip I/O terminals and module I/O terminals in parallel when mounting bare chips, and in perpendicular when mounting packaged chips, to set module I/O terminals in two sides, to use double sided substrates, and to allocate chips in a row. The efficient number of wiring layer was 4 layers when designing single sided bare chip mounting modules and 6 layers when constructing double sided bare chip mounting modules whereas the number of wiring layer was 3 layers when using single sided packaged chip mounting substrates and 5 layers when constructing double sided packaged chip mounting substrates. The most efficient configuration was to mount bare chips on doubled substrates and also to increase the number of mounting chips. The fabrication of memory multichip module showed that the modules with bare chips can be reduced to a half in volume and one third in weight comparing to the module with packaged chips. The signal propagation delay time on module substrate was reduced to 0.5-1 nsec.

In this paper, We proposed an effective demosaicking method for single chip RGB-NIR sensors to recover RGB and NIR images. As the method operates in the spatial frequency domain, the frequency domain characteristics of the sampled CFA data are investigated. Using the luminance signal in the frequency domain and the chrominance signals are processed separately with different filters. The simulated images using the real images are compared with other state-of-art methods. As a result, the proposed demosaicking method resulted an effective calculation by a single processing which the existing alternating projection method requires repeated calculation.

This paper describes a one-chip micom controller and phase angle control method for self-starting and energy saving of single-phase induction motor. The proposed method is based on the optimal efficiency control which is running by variable phase angle of main winding current such as to maintain the maximum efficiency characteristics of the motor, in voltage control with TRIAC. Experiments are focused on a capacitor starting single-phase induction motor. The optimal energy saving by variable phase angle control are verified by experimental results. Also, auxiliary winding was controlled by electronic starting switch.

The immobilization of proteins and their molecular interactions on various polymer-modified glass substrates [i.e. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS), 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS), poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-DA), chitosan (CHI), glutaraldehyde (GA), 3-(trichlorosilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM), 3'-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and poly-l-lysine (PL).] for potential applications in a nanoarray protein chip at the single-molecule level was evaluated using prismtype dual-color total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (dual-color TIRFM). A dual-color TIRF microscope, which contained two individual laser beams and a single high-sensitivity camera, was used for the rapid and simultaneous dual-color detection of the interactions and colocalization of different proteins labeled with different fluorescent dyes such as Alexa Fluor® 488, Qdot® 525 and Alexa Fluor® 633. Most of the polymer-modified glass substrates showed good stability and a relative high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio over a 40-day period after making the substrates. The GPTS/CHI/GA-modified glass substrate showed a 13.5-56.3% higher relative S/N ratio than the other substrates. 1% Top-Block in 10 mM phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.4) showed a 99.2% increase in the blocking effect of non-specific adsorption. These results show that dual-color TIRFM is a powerful methodology for detecting proteins at the single-molecule level with potential applications in nanoarray chips or nano-biosensors.

In this paper we describe designing and implementing a digital neural chip and a parallel neural machine for simulating large scale neural netsorks. The chip is a single-chip multiprocessor which has four digiral neural processors (DNP-II) of the same architecture. Each DNP-II has program memory and data memory, and the chip operates in MIMD (multi-instruction, multi-data) parallel processor. The DNP-II has the instruction set tailored to neural computation. Which can be sed to effectively simulate various neural network models including on-chip learning. The DNP-II facilitates four-way data-driven communication supporting the extensibility of parallel systems. The parallel neural machine consists of a host computer, processor boards, a buffer board and an interface board. Each processor board consists of 8*8 array of DNP-II(equivalently 2*2 neural chips). Each processor board acn be built including linear array, 2-D mesh and 2-D torus. This flexibility supports efficiency of mapping from neural network models into parallel strucgure. The neural system accomplishes the performance of maximum 40 GCPS(giga connection per second) with 16 processor boards.

Microfluidic single chip integrating thermopneumatic micropump and micro check valve are developed. The micropump and micorvalve are made of biocompatible materials, glass and PDMS, so as to be applicable to the biochip. By using the passive-type check valve, backward flow and fluid leakage are blocked and flow control is stable and precise. The chip is composed of three PDMS layers and a glass substrate. In the chip, flow channel and pump chamber were made on the PDMS layers by the replica molding technique and pump heater was made on the glass substrate by Cr/Au deposition. Diameter of the pump chamber is 7 mm and the width and depth of the channel are 200 and $180{\mu}m$, respectively. The PDMS layers chip and the heater deposited glass chip are combined by a jig and a clamp for pumping operation, and they are separable so that PDMS chip is used as a disposable but the heater chip is able to be used repeatedly. Pumping performance was simulated by CFD software and investigated experimentally. The performance was the best when the duty ratio of the applied voltage to the heater was 33%.

We present an electroporation and viability monitoring chip for lung cancer cells in a single channel with multiple electric field zones. Previous electroporation chips utilized multiple microchannels or electrodes to form multiple electric fields, thus resulting in complex structures. However, the present chip can generate multiple electric fields in a single stepwise microchannel between a pair of electrodes, thus achieving the analysis of both cell electroporation and viability with a simple structure. We demonstrate that the electric field of 0.4 kV/cm results in a maximum percentage of $51.4{\pm}3.0%$ and $26.6{\pm}0.7%$ of viable and electroporated human lung cancer cells, H23 and A549, respectively. The present chip has potential for use in integrated cell chips for transfection studies.

Single C-reactive protein (CRP) molecules, which are non-specific acute phase markers and products of the innate immune system, were quantitatively detected on a gold-nanopatterned biochip using evanescent field-enhanced fluorescence imaging. The $4{\times}5$ gold-nanopatterned biochip (spot diameter of 500 nm) was fabricated by electron beam nanolithography. Unlabeled CRP molecules in human serum were identified with single-molecule sandwich immunoassay by detecting secondary fluorescence generated by total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy. With decreased standard CRP concentrations, relative fluorescence intensities reduced in the range of 33.3 zM-800 pM. To enhance fluorescence intensities in TIRF images, the distance between biochip surface and CRP molecules was optimally adjusted by considering the quenching effect of gold and the evanescent field intensity. As a result, TIRF only detected one single-CRP molecule on the biochip the first time.
