  • FBG sensors are able to measure the strain of structures more easily and durable than electronic resistance gages and thus many researches are on the way to apply the FBG sensor for response monitering of infrastructures. This study investigates the deflection estimation technique using FBG sensors. Several FBG sensors are multiplexed in single optical fiber and installed. in parallel pairs along the length of the structure. The measured strains at the top and bottom of a cross section can be transferred to the curvature of the section which can be used to calculate its displacement. It has been demonstrated that the estimated deflections using the FBG sensor are compared well with the readings from displacement transducers. The results show that the proposed instrumentation technique is capable of estimating the vertical deflection of the structures for various loading conditions including impact and dynamic loads, which is crucial in the structural health monitoring.

Adaptive Techniques for Joint Optimization of XTC and DFE Loop Gain in High-Speed I/O

  • High-speed I/O channels require adaptive techniques to optimize the settings for filter tap weights at decision feedback equalization (DFE) read channels to compensate for channel inter-symbol interference (ISI) and crosstalk from multiple adjacent channels. Both ISI and crosstalk tend to vary with channel length, process, and temperature variations. Individually optimizing parameters such as those just mentioned leads to suboptimal solutions. We propose a joint optimization technique for crosstalk cancellation (XTC) at DFE to compensate for both ISI and XTC in high-speed I/O channels. The technique is used to compensate for between 15.7 dB and 19.7 dB of channel loss combined with a variety of crosstalk strengths from $60mV_{p-p}$ to $180mV_{p-p}$ adaptively, where the transmit non-return-to-zero signal amplitude is a constant $500mV_{p-p}$.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a technique that analyzes the global behavior of frame structures with local cracks. The technique is based on frame analysis and uses the stiffness matrix of cracked frame element. An algorithm proposed here analyzes a frame structure with local transverseedge cracks, considering the effects of crack length and location. Stress intensity factors are employed to calculate additional local compliance due to the cracks based on linear elastic fracture mechanics theory, and then this local compliance is utilized to derive the stiffness matrix of the cracked frame element. In order to verify the accuracy and reliability of the proposed approach, numerical results are compared with those of Finite Element Method for the cracked frame element, and the effects of single crack on the behavior of truss structure are also examined.

The Overlapping Running Suture Method Using Single Knotless Barbed Absorbable Suture Material for Abdominal Wall Closure after Single Incision Laparoscopic Appendectomy: Comparison with the Traditional Interrupted Closure Technique

  • Purpose: The aim of our study was to present an abdominal wall closure technique using barbed suture $V-Loc^{TM}$ 90 after single incision laparoscopic appendectomy (SILA) and to compare perioperative outcomes with conventional layer by layer abdominal wall closure after SILA. Methods: From March 2014 to July 2016, a retrospective case-control study was conducted for a total of 269 consecutive patients who underwent SILA. According to abdominal wall closure methods, 129 patients were classified into the V-Loc closure group and 140 patients were assigned into the conventional layer by layer closure group. In the V-Loc group, abdominal wall closure was performed from the fascia to the skin with a single thread of unidirectional absorbable barbed suture $V-Loc^{TM}$ 90 2-0 using continuous running suture and reverse overlapping reinforced running technique. Subcutaneous closure and subcuticular suture were performed with the remaining portion of V-Loc. Results: The V-Loc closure group showed shorter total operation time ($40.0{\pm}15.4min$ vs. $44.9{\pm}16.3min$, p=0.013) and abdominal wall cusing continuous running suture and reverse overlapping reinforced running technique. Subcutaneous closure and subcuticular suture were performed with the remaining portion of V-Loc. Results: The V-Loc closure group showed shorter total operation time losure time ($5.5{\pm}0.9min$ vs. $6.5{\pm}0.8min$, p<0.001). Postoperative incision length was significantly shorter in the V-Loc closure group ($1.1{\pm}0.3cm$ vs. $1.8{\pm}0.4cm$, p<0.001). Postoperative wound pain, time to resume diet, postoperative hospital stay, complications including surgical site infection, or mean patient satisfaction score at one month after hospital discharge was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, unidirectional knotless barbed suture is a safe alternative method for abdominal wall closure after SILA. It can save time while providing comparable cosmesis.

  • NFT 수경재배 방식을 이용한 고구마 바이러스 무병주 대량 증식 기술을 개발하기 위하여, 버미큘라이트와 펄라이트(1:1, v/v)를 채운 72공 플러그 트레이(35mL/cell)에 삽목하여 양액 종류, 삽수 크기 및 품종에 따른 생육특성을 평가하였다. 무병묘의 줄기신장, 생체중 및 건물중 등은 일본원시배양액, 한국원시배양액, 야마자키 상추배양액의 순으로 양호한 생육을 보였다. 삽수 종류에 따른 무병묘의 생육은 줄기 정단 삽수에서 가장 양호하였으며, 삽수 크기가 클수록 줄기 길이, 생체중 및 건물중의 증가가 뚜렷하였다. 품종 간에는 '신자미'와 '연황미'의 줄기신장, 생체중 및 건물중 증가가 다른 품종에 비하여 양호하였다. 줄기 굵기와 뿌리 길이는 삽수 부위 및 크기와 품종 간에 유의차가 없었다. 1마디 삽수는 2마디 삽수와 생육특성에서 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. NFT 수경 재배에서 무병주 대량 증식 효율은 1마디 삽수와 정단 삽수를 이용하는 것이 효과적이었다.

최소침습 방사능 유도 부갑상선 수술 (Minimally Invasive Radio-guided Parathyroid Surgery)

  • Introduction: Since 1996, Dr. James Norman has successfully performed mimimally invasive radio-guided parathyroidectomy(MIRP) using intraoperative nuclear mapping with $^{99m}Tc$ sestamibi scanning and radioactivity detection probe. Objectives: We aimed to introduce this new surgical technique and evaluate it's efficacy by our own experiences. Method: From May to October 1999, five consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism underwent parathyroidectomy by using modified MIRP technique. $^{99m}Tc$ sestamibi scanning was performed 1.0 or 1.5 hour before operation. After intraoperative localization of the tumor under the guidance of quantitative gamma counting with a NEVIGATOR probe, an unilateral small skin incision(3.0-4.0cm) was placed. Without a skin flap, the strap muscle was directly divided with the use of a Harmonic scalpel. After careful dissection, the parathyroid tumor was removed. Result: In all patients, a single adenoma could be easily detected and removed by this new technique. Mean incision length was 3.2cm(3.0-4.0cm) and operative time ranged from 40 to 110minute. All the patients were discharged within 2 days of surgery without any complication. Conclusion: This new operative technique could become the most minimally invasive alternative to the standard operative procedure for parathyroid adenoma.

가로수(街路樹) 식재(植栽)를 위한 무궁화의 생장조절(生長調節) (The Growth Control of Hibiscus syriacus for Street Trees Planting)

  • 가로수용 무궁화를 만들기 위한 무궁화 수행유도 실험에서 무궁화의 지하고를 100cm, 150cm, 200cm로 하고 시비를 달리한 결과, 각각의 근원경 평균이 15.7mm, 13.8mm, 10.8mm로 지하고가 낮을수록 근원경의 생장이 우수하였으며, 분산분석의 결과도 지하고에 따른 영향이 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 시비에 따른 영향은 유의하지 않았다. 또한 가로수로 식재하여 '99년부터 2000년까지 2년 동안 조사한 결과는 지하고 80~120cm, 121~150cm, 151-200cm에서 각각의 근원경 평균이 4.9mm, 4.5mm, 3.0mm의 값을 나타내 지하고 80~120cm, 121~150cm의 근원경 생장이 좋은 것으로 나타났다. 앞으로 가로수용으로 무궁화를 육성하가 위해서는 먼저 수고와 지하고를 고려하는 것이 타당한 것으로 본 실험의 결과에서 나타났다. 그러나 본 실험의 결과는 짧은 기간의 시험에 의한 것이므로 앞으로 계속하여 관찰 연구하여 보완하고자 한다.

철근 콘크리트 구조물에 매설된 다중화 광섬유 압력 센서 (Mutiplexed Fiber Optic Pressure Sensor Embedded in a Reinforced Concrete Structure)

  • 페브리-페롯 간섭계 원리를 이용한 광섬유 센서를 철근 콘크리트 구조물에 매설하고 구조물에 압력을 가했을 때 위상변화와 스트레인과의 특성 관계를 조사하였다. 단일모드 광섬유 (SMF) 내에 $TiO_2$ 유전체 박막을 용융 접합하여 공극의 길이가 10 mm인 광섬유 페브리-페롯 간섭계를 제작하였다. 제작한 페브리-페롯 간섭계와 6 mm의 철근을 $100{\times}100{\times}500\;mm^3$ 크기의 철근 콘크리트 구조물에 매설하였다. 광섬유 간섭계 및 광섬유 리드선은 접착제로 광섬유를 보호하였으며, 여러 지점에서 구조물이 받는 압력의 크기를 측정하기 위해 TDM 방식의 다중화 방법을 이용하였다. 제작한 광섬유 간섭계 센서의 광출력 특성은 인가한 하중에 따라 선형적으로 변화하였으며, 제작된 센서의 감도는 각각 $1.03^{\circ}/kg$$0.76^{\circ}/kg$이였다.

단일메모리 구조의 가변길이 FFT/IFFT 프로세서 설계 (A variable-length FFT/IFFT processor design using single-memory architecture)

  • 본 연구에서는 OFDM 기반 통신 시스템을 위한 가변길이 FFT/IFFT 프로세서를 설계하였다. 설계된 FFT/IFFT 프로세서는 $N=64{\times}2^k$ ($0{\leq}k{\leq}7$)의 8가지 크기에 대해 FFT/IFFT 연산이 가능하며, in-place 방식의 단일 메모리 구조를 기반으로 FFT 길이에 따라 radix-4와 radix-2 DIF 알고리듬의 혼합구조가 적용된다. 메모리 감소와 연산 정밀도 향상을 위해, 중간결과 값의 크기에 따른 2단계 조건적 스케일링 기법을 적용하여 설계되었다. 설계된 가변길이 FFT/IFFT 프로세서의 성능을 평가한 결과, 64점~8,192점 FFT 연산의 경우 평균 60-dB 이상의 정밀도를 가지며, $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS 셀 라이브러리로 합성한 결과 75-MHz@3.3-V의 클록주파수로 동작 가능한 것으로 평가되었다. 64점 FFT 연산에 $2.55-{\mu}s$가 소요되고, 8,192점 FFT 연산에 $762.7-{\mu}s$가 소요되어 OFDM 기반의 무선 랜, DMB, DVB 시스템의 요구조건을 만족한다.

Optimization of Yonsei Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (YSECT) Detector for Fast Inspection of Spent Nuclear Fuel in Water Storage

  • Background: The gamma emission tomography (GET) device has been reported a reliable technique to inspect partial defects within spent nuclear fuel (SNF) of pin-by-pin level. However, the existing GET devices have low accuracy owing to the high attenuation and scatter probability for SNF inspection condition. The purpose of this study is to design and optimize a Yonsei single-photon emission computed tomography version 2 (YSECT.v.2) for fast inspection of SNF in water storage by acquisition of high-quality tomographic images. Materials and Methods: Using Geant4 (Geant4 Collaboration) and DETECT-2000 (Glenn F. Knoll et al.) Monte Carlo simulation, the geometrical structure of the proposed device was determined and its performance was evaluated for the 137Cs source in water. In a Geant4-based assessment, proposed device was compared with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)-authenticated device for the quality of tomographic images obtained for 12 fuel sources in a 14 × 14 Westinghouse-type fuel assembly. Results and Discussion: According to the results, the length, slit width, and septal width of the collimator were determined to be 65, 2.1, and 1.5 mm, respectively, and the material and length of the trapezoidal-shaped scintillator were determined to be gadolinium aluminum gallium garnet and 45 mm, respectively. Based on the results of performance comparison between the YSECT.v.2 and IAEA's device, the proposed device showed 200 times higher performance in gamma-detection sensitivity and similar source discrimination probability. Conclusion: In this study, we optimally designed the GET device for improving the SNF inspection accuracy and evaluated its performance. Our results show that the YSECT.v.2 device could be employed for SNF inspection.
